Credit Crunch: The British Perspective
2008-09-08 21:19:00 The credit crunch is clearly having an effect on all of us as we are becoming more hesitant and cautious with what we spend our money on. With inflationary rises in basic living costs such as housing and utilities, there…

Knowing History Puts It All Into Perspective
2008-08-25 13:57:00 The politics in an election year gets so overwrought that reading about history puts things into perspective. Americans don’t realize that the lack of violence in our elections is not normal in world history, nor is the transfer of power from one person to another a common occurance in world history. So last week’s UKTimes had an ...
A Divine Perspective on the Church ? C.J. Mahaney
2008-08-15 16:37:00 Last Sunday, we had the privilege of hearing C.J. Mahaney preach in our church. His text was 1 Cor. 1:1-9 where Paul surprisingly commends the Corinthian church. He’s about to provide some strong correction for their many errors, but he goes out of his way to thank God for them, and ensure they ...
San Diego Paper: ?Migrant? Deaths at Border Grows, Report Lacks Perspective
2008-07-18 13:50:00 -By Warner Todd Huston The San Diego Union-Tribune published a story last week that typifies the lack of perspective and a refusal to give a more full account of the facts in the illegal immigration debate common from too many media outlets. The Union-Trib was all worried that “22 migrants have died in S.D. sector” but ...

Reincarnation | Islamic Perspective | part.2
2008-06-08 01:09:00 1. Beyond our historical mindOne of the challenges of human mind is that its often caught in historical mind. That also explains, whenever an enlightened person, a new prophet arrived, a new concept was put forward, masses are caught in their historical mind frame and fail to see the truth, fail to think outside the box and the ignorance sometime turn into arrogance. "Alas for My servants, there comes not a Messenger to them but they mock at him". - The Quran 36 :31When it comes to bridging the universal truth found in different religions in all of humanity, its again the historical mind that blocks us to even be ready to listen, let alone realize. For thousands of years, all religion has trained systematically to reject spiritual truths, just because its found or pre-exist in another faith tradition, ignoring the universality of the truth. When it comes to the idea of Reincarnation, if we are talking about spirit entering and re-entering the flesh, then the very concept is always th...
Reincarnation | Islamic Perspective | part.1
2008-06-07 11:25:00 1. Reincarnation | Where traditional Islam stands? In the orthodox / traditional / mainstream Islam at its later version doesn't talk about reincarnation. The idea of reincarnation is not discussed in Quran explicitly, the Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace, never had to confront this idea since the very concept was absent mostly from the arab society and minds of his time. Offcourse the idea of hereafter was there, the idea of final resurrection is there, but the continuing cycle of life and death is simply not discussed openly.During the time of Quranic revelation, people of Jewish community came to the Prophet and asked about the mystery of soul. Prophet remained silent and waited for answer from God and it was revealed through the Angel Gabriel as inspiration:And they ask you concerning the soul. Say: "The soul is one of the things, of which the knowledge is only with my Lord. And of knowledge, you (mankind) have been given only a little." - The Quran, Al-Israa' 17:85alternate...

New James Bond Game To Blur Perspective Lines
2008-06-04 01:43:00 Activision's upcoming 007 Quantum of Solace will combine both first-person and third-person graphics, according to a new UK preview. Now is this 2D perspective or 3D? According to the current issue of GamesMaster (#200), Quantum of Solace will primarily use the first-person perspective. But a third-person perspective is also heavily used, notably when our gadget-freak takes cover a la GTA IV and during action sequences like the quick-time events found in God of War.With exception to the confirmed setting of both Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, little else was revealed in the UK preview.007 Quantum of Solace is being developed by Treyarch games using the Call of Duty 4 engine. The action game is scheduled for release on Xbox 360, Wii, PS3, and PC on November 7, including both single player and multiplayer modes. Inter-personal relationships in Buddhist perspective
2008-05-31 11:34:00 Inter-personal relationships in Buddhist perspective By Professor Chandima Wijebandara,www.sundayobserver.-lk (The writer is BRS Graduate of School of Buddhist Studies, Singapore ) As Aristotle has rightly stated that man is a social animal. Men wish to live in society, enjoy companionship, and happy to be crowded by fellow beings. Brahmajalasutta maintains that the initial feeling the first being to reappear in the present age of world reformation fell was loneliness. He wanted company. So, according to the Buddhist story also, the need of company and consequential necessity of interpersonal relations is ingrained in living beings. The Buddha?s practised (and, of course, made the followers also practise) seclusion only till they attained spiritual heights. After the attainments, they return to society to be in service for the benefit of many (bahujana). The Buddha once said ?I, Udayi, sometimes, stay crowded by monks and nuns, lay di...

Supportive or wimpy? Depends on your perspective
2008-05-28 07:50:00 One of my children plays a sport for a somewhat controversial coach. We like the coach a lot, and have had no problems. However, some other parents disagree and have treated the coach pretty badly, and I am embarrassed because I'm associated with them, but, I do not share their opinion. After assuring the coach that we would remain on the team this upcoming season, we looked at our schedule and realized that we'd probably be too busy to play. I was dreading, (dreading, I tell you) giving this news because I thought the coach would think we were doing what these other parents are doing and that isn't it AT ALL. I was all set to send an e-mail, when an e-mail from the coach arrived telling us how wonderful our player is and thanking us for supporting the team when others didn't. Dammit. Guess we're still gonna play, although on a limited schedule. I'm either a wimp, or it's the right thing to do. Or both. Not sure. ADDED: Jay reminded me that in my effort to...

Putting that $15 surcharge into perspective

While it seems ...

News: From Cyclone Sidr to Cyclone Nargis - an aidworker's perspective
2008-05-18 13:08:00 An aidworker from Oxfam explains how the immediate effect of the cyclone devastation is only the beginning of misery for those affected. Those on the ground (in Myanmar) are estimating that at least 100,000 people were killed by the storm. The numbers are devastating, each one of them painfully reminding me what a difference an investment into disaster preparedness and early warning systems ? like those that have been implemented in Bangladesh ? could have made for the families in Myanmar.Surface water that people are used to drinking is likely to be contaminated not only by dead bodies and livestock carcasses, but also human and animal waste spread by floodwaters and overflowing latrines. The weather forecast for this week predicts more heavy rain, and even a new storm approaching the cyclone-affected area. With people?s resistance to disease already weakened after days of living in overcrowded conditions without food and proper roofs over their heads, the children and elderly are l...

AIG Posts Q1 Earnings Loss-Putting Things in Perspective for Structured Set
2008-05-09 00:11:00 I received a call today from an attorney who asked me what I thought about today's AIG announcement of its first quarter loss (see below). Let's look back a short while before coming back to May 8th. February 10, 2006 AIG announcement of settlement with Eliot Spitzer and New York State Insurance Department (and I received calls like I did today and in the months after 9-11-with press induced fears that life insurance and workers comp exposures from 9-11 would cripple structured settlement annuity insurers)THEN March 17, 2006 Business Insurance states that AIG posted a 6.5% increase in profit despite a drop in net income in the 4th quarter (attributed to the charge for the settlement) May 8, 2008. American International Group (AIG) reports a $7.81 billion first-quarter loss and announced plans to raise $12.5 billion in new capital. According to the Wall Street Journal. the insurance giant, which has been battered by soured investments on credit-def...
Rearview Perspective
2008-05-07 20:30:00 As an introduction to this blog I should introduce myself and make a couple of disclaimers. First, I've been in this industry a long time. I could do the whole "I remember when..." routine but suffice it to say that I remember when video meant television and computers were things that took up entire rooms and were made by IBM.I'm not an engineer or a technical wizard. Like a lot of folks, I'm self taught and am still trying to figure things out. New challenges are presented to me every day. And that's part of the fun, and the frustration, of my job. I've learned a few valuable lessons over the years. One of them is that change is inevitable. And to survive, one must change and adapt. That's what I hope will be the purpose of this blog: to identify changes, to give some perspective on what was, and therefore what is, and explore what may be. There's a gazillion blogs out there. I'm going to try to be different. ...

The Ellis Perspective: Gary Cope's Take
2008-05-01 13:32:00 Ellis figures in as #4 DE as rookie (Photo Source) For the entirety of the four months between the end of the NFL's regular season and this past weekend's NFL Draft, the fine folks who visit this blog daily have been expressing their worry over the Buffalo Bills' pass rush. The Bills boasted one of the NFL's worst pass defenses last season, and that wasn't because the team's starting cornerbacks were awful (note: they weren't great). In the style of defense that the Bills run - whether or not it's run in the most traditional of manners - a disruptive pass rush is essential to defensive success, especially against the pass. Enter Chris Ellis. Buffalo's third-round draft pick will be expected to contribute right out of the gate as a pass rush specialist. But like second-round pick James Hardy, Ellis enters the league with some questions about his character. No one really knows what to expect from him as a player, either. We're very happy to be joined this morning by Ga...
The Hardy Perspective: Hoosier Report's Take
2008-04-30 13:00:00 Hardy should start immediately at WR (Photo Source) Buffalo Bills wide receiver James Hardy has only been a Bill for a little over three days, and already there is an uncommon amount of pressure on his shoulders. As a second-round pick, the ultra-productive Hardy and his 6'5" frame are being counted on to boost Buffalo's scoring potential offensively. That's a tall task for any rookie - even if that rookie happens to be pretty tall himself. So to get a better perspective on the rookie who is supposed to open up Buffalo's offense, I spoke to John, author of the Indiana blog Hoosier Report, who watched Hardy put up double-digit touchdown totals in each of his three years as a Hoosier. John's first-hand perspective on Hardy serves as an invaluable resource in regards to what we can expect from Hardy in his rookie season. Here is the interview in its entirety; my questions are in bold: What do you make of Hardy's legal issues in 2006? Do you believe h...
The McKelvin Perspective: Matt Miller's Take
2008-04-29 13:00:00 McKelvin has elite potential at CB, PR (Photo Source) With their first round selection in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills chose the top player rated on their board in Troy cornerback Leodis McKelvin. Widely regarded as the top cornerback available in this year's draft class, the highly athletic McKelvin was known as a shut-down corner at the college level, as well as one of the nation's elite return specialists. The Bills made a splash at the top of their 2007 draft by taking RB Marshawn Lynch, whose superb rookie year may have landed him Offensive Rookie of the Year honors had it not been for a certain Peterson character in Minnesota. The Bills' pick of McKelvin, however, may have provided the team with an even more explosive player, especially when the ball is in his hands. Just how good is McKelvin, and just how good can McKelvin be? No one is more equipped than a draft scout to answer those questions. Matt Miller, head of the popular scouting service New Era Scoutin...

Becausethe Apache were “under control†it was easier for Mexican merchants to cross the border along specific trade routes that had been established a thousand years pervious (and are still in use today). Tombstone had the money. They could afford things. They paid big money for things, at highly inflated rates.
