A Pest and an Exterminator, Sharing an Outdoor Hockey Heritage
2009-09-17 20:15:00
Two Minnesotans, Joe Finley and Trevor Bruess, are camping with the Capitals this week, and they skated on a line together in Wednesday's Duchesne Cup concluding scrimmage. Minneapolis native Bruess was signed by the Caps last spring after completing his junior season at Minnesota State; he's a modest 6 '0, 209, but he plays bigger than his size, and can he skate! It'd be downright scary to imagine Edina native Joe Finley playing bigger than his 6 '7, 245 frame. As I watched them antagonize the opposition on just about every shift in their scrimmages this week I thought of Bruess as the Pest and Finley as the Exterminator. They're about the same age, and I don't think it's inconceivable to imagine them as part of a Capitals' antagonism outfit in a couple of years. As Minnesota-raised hockey players, Bruess and Finley share a profound appreciation for playing hockey outdoors, on the State of Hockey's abundant frozen playgrounds for puck.    "That's where it all st...

Pest control you can live with.
2008-09-30 05:13:00
I've always been told that every house has mice living in it, something that I don't like to think about too much. I've also been told that mice will eat almost anything -- plants, dairy, meat, whatever you've got. And while they only live about four months, they have 5 or 6 babies beginning at about five weeks old.So if you find one mouse, odds are you're maybe 5 weeks away from having 5 or 6 mice -- and 10 weeks away from having 25 or 36 mice. Nice.So I don't want even a single mouse in the house -- let alone 25 or 36 or some exponential number of them. And I do what I can to avoid that: keep floor clean, don't leave the cereal out, stuff like that. Beyond that, though, I'm in a bind because I don't want to use a lot of chemicals to help with the pest control. We've got cats and babies! and even though I don't mention it a lot, I consider myself something of an environmentalist in that I'm in favor of having an environment. Exterminators are out, then. And I ...

What a Pest?
2008-05-15 11:00:00
Pests of all kinds can attack homes at almost any time of the year. Generally, when temperatures rise, most of the pests perk up. As the weather changes and it becomes warmer, pests? metabolism increases and they are more active.Pests that are found in and around houses can be divided in different categories: wood destroying pests (like termites), food, fabric, and nuisance pests (ants, flies), food storage pests (fungus), pests that sting, bite, or injure (bees, mosquitoes), vertebrate pests (house mouse, lizards) and many more. All of them create problems.Worst of all house pests, termites are temperature dependent. Termites initially are just a mild nuisance, but if they are not controlled at early stage they can be destructive. Of about 2000 known species of termite, most commonly found in this part of the world are known as white ants that damage wooden items such as furniture or house structures. In summers, termites can wreak havoc in homes. Termite can start their damaging ac...

PEST of a PESTO... but then onto PASTA!
2008-05-04 10:53:00
"How could such sweet and wholesome hoursBe reckoned but with herbs and flowers?"Andrew Marvel Basil Almond Pesto... Snip,snip,snip...all I could hear out in the garden was snip, snip, snip. Sunday morning, me lazing in the study with my cuppa cold milk...one day I like to steer clear of the kitchen in the morning. The snipping didn't seem to end & I got suspicious. Stepped out to find the gardener trimming away my beloved basil bushes to pretty shapes...I almost passed out! There, lying all around, were bunches of my precious basil! He felt it had overgrown too much & decided it was time to clean it up; for him it was just another part of the overgrown hedge! Leaves galore...Grrrrrrrrrr...& that's how Sunday morning began. I made him bag the leaves & then got them in & set to work. In temperatures as high as we have here, leaves wilt in next to no time. The only good thing was that I was coerced into doing something I had been procrastinating about for far too...

Do It Naturally - Control Pest and Garden Insects Organically
2008-04-15 15:46:00
If there are flowers and vegetables in your garden, you can be sure that there are pests as well. Especially if you will be eating vegetables from the garden, you won't want to use chemicals to kill the pests. Luckily, for every pest, you can use a natural means of repellent. Natural pest control is not only healthier for you, your family, your plants, and the environment - it is cheaper too.Approximately 136 million pounds of pesticides are used every year in the home lawn and gardens of North Americans. This is just for individuals, not even for farmers (who actually use 1/3 of the amount as the homeowners). Most contamination and poisonings that occur originate from single family homes. It is very important to use methods of pest control that are healthy to surrounding life and the environment in general. To avoid adding more harmful chemicals to our soil, you can take the following natural pest control measures.First, to keep insects from damaging your garden, you should check t...

The Truth About Termites and Pest Control - My Home and Global Warming
2008-03-28 14:26:00
Many scientists argue over the issue of Global Warming, some say the climate change is caused by man's pollution, mainly CO2. Others completely disagree stating that the Planet cools and heats in cycles that have been going on for 5 Billion years and it is absurd for humankind to think they have a major roll in causing it or in trying to prevent it. Whether you side with the media and the Global Warming Alarmists is immaterial to the fact that pollution is problematic. But did you know that your home could be giving off much more greenhouse gasses than you realize? It's true, in fact termites cause greenhouse gasses as they eat away at your house, indeed they are one of the largest contributors. Hard to believe isn't it, that is to say it's hard to believe something so small as a termite could cause such a huge problem, but that is how the percentages and statistics stack up. Many home owners are adverse to using chemicals to kill termites or pests in their home, but they need to...

Pest Control Business Idea
2008-03-10 06:48:00
I guess in this kind of business, many will be disgusted because you are actually dealing with pests like rodents, termites, cockroaches, and other insects that annoy us, it can also be a health risk and sometimes destroy our property. Like for example, a termite. Although termites are very small, they are destructive to our homes if not properly eliminated. A whole house can be torn apart by those tiny insects not because of their size, but because of their enormous numbers that eat the structures of our house. Most houses are built with wooden structures and even modern housing today use wooden structures on the roof and ceiling even though the walls are made of concrete. There is a time while I was working in an office building with all of the structures made of concrete, I saw traces of termites on the floor near the wall. My workstation and our department’s cubicle was parallel to the wall. That time I was having an allergic rhinitis often and sometimes there are patche...

A woman was having a passionate affair with an inspector from a pest-control company. One afternoon they were carrying on in the bedroom together when her husband arrived home unexpectedly."Quick," said the woman to the lover, "into the closet!" and she pushed him in the closet, stark naked. The husband, however, became suspicious and after a search of the bedroom discovered the man in the closet."Who are you?" he asked him."I'm an inspector from Bugs-B-Gone, " said the exterminator."What are you doing in there?" the husband asked."I'm investigating a complaint about an infestation of moths," the man replied."And where are your clothes?" asked the husband. The man looked down at himself and said, "Those little bastards!"

Pest Management

I have a question about pest management. My step-son lives in an apartment and has been having a lot of problems with roaches. He has kept the place clean, dry and makes sure no food is left out. He has been spraying chemicals and they still keep coming back.I'm guessing its from messy neighbors. What is the Landlord's responsibility in this if any? I know the landlord didn't cause the pests, but can messy neighbor just force my step-son to deal with this since he is in a fixed lease?
Russia bans plant products from India due to pest
2008-01-23 10:09:00
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia will ban from Jan. 28 imports of plant products from India after discovering the dangerous khapra beetle pest in a shipment of sesame, the country's animal and plant health watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor said on Wednesday. The ban will also apply to plant products from third countries accompanied by phytosanitary certificates issued by the National Quarantine and Plant Protection Organisation of India, a Rosselkhoznadzor statement said. A Rosselkhoznadzor spokesman said the ban would apply in particular to bulk tea, coffee, rice and tobacco, but it would not affect these products packaged for the retail trade, as they were outside the watchdog's jurisdiction.
