With all the press and uproar about the tainted food manufactured for our pets, the problem's been handled, right?Unfortunately, no. While there are no widespread recalls at this time, problems still exist. A Canadian boy contracted two rare forms of Salmonella from pork dog treats made by the Rollover Premium Pet Food company. (Treats from the High-River, Alberta, plant have been recalled.)Regulations were passed in 2007 to require pet food companies to recall any food that was tainted. But critics say that this legislation is ineffective because reporting is voluntary - no Federal inspections are required on pet food products. "Utah's state veterinarian is warning ranchers to avoid giving inexpensive pet food to their herds. Wet Pet Food Sales Struggle After Recall
2008-03-26 15:29:00 According to a recent USA Today article, more then a year after the massive pet food recall, people are still weary of buying wet, or soft, pet food. And, many products have not returned to the shelf.Personally, I'm not surprised. I boycotted all the foods that were part of the recall, and have not gone back. There really hasn't been any reason to go back. I found a brand that I trust (Wellness) and wasn't part of the recall, and I haven't had a reason to leave them to go back to the brands that have lost our trust. It's all about brand loyalty for me. I found a brand that my dogs like, that is high quality, and good for their allergy issues. Pet Food Recall A Year Later
2008-03-22 01:12:00 It's been a year since the mess first started with the pet food recall. The recall lasted several months, and shed light on an industry that was unregulated, and in a lot of ways, didn't care much about the pets they were supposed to feed. It also showed that the same company which was making the "commercial," i.e., inexpensive brands, was also making the high-priced premium brands that were supposed to help make your pet live a longer, healthier life....so much for that idea!Unfortunately, there is still more work to be done in order to stop this mess from happening again. For example, the legislation that was passed requires the companies to voluntarily recall contaminated petfood. 2008-02-11 15:17:00 According to a report by Pet Product News International, three companies are facing federal charges in relation to the distribution of a contaminated pet food ingredient that might have cost more than 4,000 dogs and cats their lives. Recently, a federal grand jury indicted a U.S. food importer and two Chinese firms for their roles in manufacturing and distributing contaminated wheat gluten that sickened thousands of pets. 2007-12-08 14:41:00 Combination of two chemicals proved lethalVeterinarians say the mystery behind the deaths of dogs and cats across the country that ate tainted pet food earlier this year has been solved.The veterinarians now blame the deaths on the combination of two chemicals the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found in the more than 60 million containers of recalled pet food: melamine and cyanuric acid.Melamine is used to make plastic. Cyanuric acid is used to chlorinate pools. Neither is approved for use in pet food.Those two chemicals -- which FDA officials discovered in the imported wheat gluten and rice protein concentrated use to make pet food -- can combine and form crystals in the animals’ bodies, the veterinarians say. 2007-10-24 09:08:00 Legislation passed by Congress in September contains food safety provisions requiring the Food and Drug Administration to set ingredient and processing standards for pet food. The new law, which applies also to human food, establishes an early warning system to alert the public about unsafe pet food. Congress directed the FDA to improve communication with the public, companies, and professional organizations during recalls, including the posting of information and a searchable, user-friendly recall list on the agency's Web site. A reportable food registry must be set up so the FDA can issue alerts about foods that could harm people or animals. The agency is to provide more detailed reports to Congress on food inspections as well. Under the new law, state and federal authorities must work together to improve food safety programs.
