Valuable Recordings Missing From Jamaican Archive
2008-01-08 01:16:00 A treasure trove of recordings have gone missing from the former Jamaica Broadcasting Company. Among them are recordings by Bob Marley and from the 70's.It is not known at this time if the recordings were stolen or destroyed. Employees of the newly formed Public Broadcasting Corp. of Jamaica were touring the old building where the archives were stored when they noticed that they were missing. The recordings were to be the cornerstone of their first broadcasts.Gladstone Wilson, former program manager for JBC, has said, "The latest development is a national disgrace."Olivia George, the country's information minister, has said the the "loss is a blow to the island's history."Also in the archive was video of Marley's One Love Peace concert from 1978.Source: Associated Press, contactmusic.com

2008-01-06 20:42:00 Peter Tosh, born Winston Hubert McIntosh (October 19, 1944 – September 11, 1987[1]) was the guitarist in the original Wailing Wailers, a reggae musician, and a trailblazer for the Rastafari movement.Tosh grew up in the Kingston, Jamaica slum of Trenchtown. His short-fuse temper and unveiled sarcasm usually kept him in trouble, earning him the nickname Stepping Razor after a song written by Joe Higgs, an early mentor. He began to sing and learn guitar at a young age, inspired by the American stations he could pick up on his radio. After an illustrious career with the Wailers and as a solo musician, his life was cut short when he was brutally murdered at his home. Though robbery was officially said to be the motivation behind Tosh's death, many believe that there were ulterior motives to the killing, citing that nothing was taken from the house. 1. Goode," both of which broke the U.K. Top 50 and the U.S. Top 100? That takes real chutzpah. However, if one were going to come up with a ten-song list beyond that pair of heavy-hitters, this is what most selectors would choose. Of course, real fans might also want to hear the likes of "Magadog," "Ketchy Shuby," "Buk-In-Hamm Palace," "I'm the Toughest," "Reggaemylitis," and "Mama Africa." And why should they be deprived of that pleasure? The whole point of CDs is that they hold more music than vinyl, and the idea that in the 21st century fans are being subjected to the limits left behind in the 20th is just unacceptable.
