Saint Petraeus Keeps Climbing The Ladder
2008-07-11 14:27:00
This MSNBC story tells us the following?WASHINGTON - The Senate has confirmed Gen. David Petraeus as the top commander in the Middle East and Lt. Gen. Raymond Odierno to replace Petraeus as the chief military officer in Iraq. The Senate voted 95-2 in favor of Petraeus and 96-1 for Odierno. And CNN reported that the two ?No? votes against Petraeus were cast by Robert Byrd and Tom Harkin, with Harkin also voting against Odierno; Byrd?s full statement is here, and I must say that it showed a lot of deliberation. Here is a notable excerpt (from the CNN story)?Gen. Petraeus' career will be judged in large part by his role in the Iraq conflict," Byrd said. "His reticence to address other regional issues raises questions about his willingness to devote the focus and the resources needed to address them properly."And Harkin voted against both Petraeus and Odierno because, in essence, they had no plan for redeploying our military out of Iraq to fight the greatest terrorist threats we truly fa...
Why Is Obama Willing to Meet with Ahmadinejad But Not Petraeus?

THE OBAMASSIAH AND IRAQOnce upon a time, (okay it was about 870 days or so ago) in a galaxy far, far away, Barack Obama visited Iraq.  He was there for two days.  He saw nothing that made him change his opinion that the US needed to pull out of Iraq.    The day after he left President Bush announced the “serge”.  Who would’a guessed? What do you do when you have a person running for President of the United States  who doesn’t have either the courage to visit the our current battlefield or the inclination to do so.  ...

Fallujah Revisited: Bush, Petraeus Prepare 'Cleansing' of Sadr City
2008-05-10 00:16:00
by Chris Floyd I.George W. Bush and David Petraeus are preparing to make a new Fallujah in Sadr City, home to two million Shiites in Baghdad. Thousands of people are already fleeing the area before the full-scale slaughter and destruction begin. As in Fallujah, the multitudes who cannot escape will be trapped in a "free fire zone", subjected to ruthless bombardment and ground assault. Thousands perhaps tens of thousands of innocent civilians stand in the shadow of imminent death. The assault is part of the run-up to the coming attack on Iran an attempt to secure the rear of that new front by destroying Iraq's Shiite nationalist forces. It is also part of an on-going effort to eliminate the strongest rival to the Shiite extremists that Bush has installed in office in Iraq, before the conquered land's fall elections. The preliminary assault on Sadr City has already begun, of course. As the BBC notes, in the last seven weeks around 1,000 people ...
America's Occupation Trumps the "Surge" and Petraeus' Counterinsurgency Man
2008-05-06 11:21:00
by Walter C. Uhler As three months of news reports of escalating violence in Iraq undercut widespread American propaganda about the "surge's" success, increasing numbers of Americans, once again, are reaching the conclusion that the Bush administration's illegal, immoral and incompetent invasion and occupation of Iraq is a war that never should have been fought. According to the results of CNN/Opinion Research Poll reported on 1 May 2008, 68 percent of Americans now oppose George W. Bush's war in Iraq. These Americans have (belatedly) gotten it right. Moreover, five years after viewing the sick "Mission Accomplished" propaganda, it's now becoming clear that the "surge" and the implementation of the counterinsurgency strategy detailed in General Petraeus' Counterinsurgency Field Manual were last-ditch and largely propaganda gimmicks chosen by Bush to avoid admitting his stark defeat in Iraq. Thus, Bush and Cheney are sacrificing lives...

Tomgram: Petraeus, Falling Upwards - Selling the President's General
2008-04-30 10:53:00
by Tom Engelhardt You simply can't pile up enough adjectives when it comes to the general, who, at a relatively young age, was already a runner-up for Time Magazine's Person of the Year in 2007. His record is stellar. His tactical sense extraordinary. His strategic ability, when it comes to mounting a campaign, beyond compare. I'm speaking, of course, of General David Petraeus, the President's surge commander in Iraq and, as of last week, the newly nominated head of U.S. Central Command (Centcom) for all of the Middle East and beyond "King David" to those of his peers who haven't exactly taken a shine to his reportedly "high self-regard." And the campaign I have in mind has been his years' long wooing and winning of the American media, in the process of which he sold himself as a true American hero, a Caesar of celebrity. As far as can be told, there's never been a seat in his helicopter that couldn't be filled by a friendly (or adoring) ...
Obama says will back Petraeus for new military job
2008-04-27 22:24:00
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama, who has called for withdrawing U.S. combat troops from Iraq, said on Sunday he will vote to confirm the top commander there for a new job as head of the military's Central Command. President George W. Bush has nominated Gen. David Petraeus, who led the buildup of troops in Iraq, to be in charge of operations across the Middle East and Central Asia. If confirmed by the Senate, Petraeus will still be in that job when the next president replaces Bush at the White House in January 2009. Obama hopes that person is him. "Yes," Obama told "Fox News Sunday" when asked if, as a senator from Illinois, he would approve Petraeus. "I think Petraeus has done a good tactical job in Iraq." Obama has said he would start pulling out more troops as soon as he became president. "My hope is that Petraeus would reflect that wider view of our strategic interest," he said on "Fox News Sunday." "I will listen to General Petraeus giv...

David Petraeus Nominated to Head CENTCOM
2008-04-23 23:36:00
Today, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates announced the appointment of David Petraeus to head the U.S. Central Command. In 2007 Petraeus was appointed as Commanding General of the Multinational Force in Iraq, overseeing the "surge." Through his tenure, military and Iraqi casualties have dramatically fallen, but anti-war sentiments at home remain high.It is unlikely there will be opposition to his nomination, but it will be interesting to see the reactions of Democrats as a vote for Patraeus can be seen as a vote secondary vote supporting the current course in Iraq. I for one approve of this appointment. On a political note, Republicans see Patraeus as a possible candidate for President in 2012 if McCain does not win or if he does not seek a second term. It is unclear to me if Patraeus is a Democrat or Republican. Here are some reactions. From Senator Harry Reid:"The next Centcom commander and field commander in Iraq will have to help the next president with a number of critically importa...

General Petraeus' Iraq testimony: mix of myth and reality
2008-04-11 21:18:00
The recent appearance of General Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker at the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committee, provided little in the way of new information. There were few surprises. The questions posed by the panel weren't very challenging, and the replies were vague at best with Petraeus at one point referring in abstract terms to the "geometry of the battlefield" and the "calculus" of diplomacy and politics. His reassurances rang hollow, because his measure of progress is suspect.Petraeus' assertion that the Maliki government is in the business of cracking down on outlaw elements in order to unify Iraq under the rule of law is misleading. The divisions in Iraq are in fact deeper than they have ever been. Maliki is all about bolstering his sectarian power base, at the expense of his sectarian enemies. To present Maliki as national unity champ pushes the bounds of credulity.Petraeus keeps pointing to the down turn in levels of violence, without speaking abou...

Hillary Clinton's Secret Crush on General Petraeus
2008-04-11 07:05:00
General Petraeus please   "General Betray Us," Clinton won't condemn MoveOn.org's attack on the General, but she also cannot seem to keep her penetrating gaze off the military man. This is not the first time Hillary Cinton has been in love. In the Bill Clinton White House, staffers were often sent at late hours to Blockbuster video to rent Dolly Parton's "Straight Talk." When Bill was spending late hours with Monica, Hillary was cuddled up with light popcorn, Diet Pepsi and Dolly. Things ended tragically after Parton was invited to the White House, and Hillary learned the truth that they were fake. But things are different this time. General Petraeus is also a straight talker, and he is all real, and strangely he is all man. "We have never seen Hill like this before." said a staffer that would not be named. "It's like she is getting feelings she never thought she had. Like when I brought her coffee the other day she looked me in the ...

Petraeus admits he misled Congress
2008-04-10 01:47:00
In his testimony to Congress on Sept. 10, 2007, Gen. David Petraeus used a flagrantly misleading slide to depict how violence in Baghdad had changed over time. Rep. John Murtha: The Gen. Petraeus and Amb. Crocker Hearings and What the
2008-04-09 01:25:00
General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker are testifying this week that the "surge" has worked. They claim that violent incidents have decreased and that progress towards victory in Iraq has been made. When you look at the surge in purely military terms, it has reduced violence. Our men and women in uniform have done what they have been asked to do. On the battlefield they have no equal. But the surge proves that there is no military solution to Iraq. Our military cannot guarantee Iraqi economic progress or government efficacy. Look at the facts -- oil production remains below prewar levels, electricity in Baghdad remains below prewar levels, unemployment is as high as 50 percent in certain areas, and the Iraqi Government refuses to take the political steps necessary for national reconciliation. We must not be fooled by those who say there will be chaos if we leave Iraq. The leaders of the Iraqi factions can choose whether or not there will be chaos in Iraq. Prime Minister Maliki, ...
Petraeus: Return to 'pre-surge' troop levels, then wait
2008-04-09 01:00:00
Iraq is making "fragile but reversible" progress on security, but it's too early to set dates to pull out all U.S. troops, the top U.S. military commander in Iraq told Congress on Tuesday. Gen. David Petraeus said the number of troops should return to "pre-surge" levels this summer, but the military should gauge conditions before making further decisions. After the 20,000 troops sent during last year's surge are withdrawn, by July, the military should wait 45 days before deciding on more reductions, Petraeus told the Senate Armed Services Committee. "This approach does not allow establishment of a set withdrawal timetable," he said. "However, it does provide the flexibility those of us on the ground need to preserve the still fragile security gains our troopers have fought so hard and sacrificed so much to achieve." There has been "significant but uneven progress," Petraeus said, adding that recent violence shows the progress is "fragile but reversible." "The situation in certa...
