2007-12-25 21:13:00 Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez presided Friday at the opening of a regional petroleum summit in Cuba, pressing his efforts to counter U.S. influence in Latin America and the Caribbean by offering cheap oil.Chavez, who wants to use Venezuela's vast oil reserves to help create a "confederation of republics" free of U.S. interests, called on regional leaders to band together against the failed "dictatorship of world capitalism."Opening the Petrocaribe summit in Cienfuegos, a southern coastal city about 150 miles from Havana, Chavez said his plan should go beyond mere financing mechanisms and suggested that some countries repay the oil with social services.READ MORE... 2007-08-13 04:30:00 El acuerdo estipula cinco líneas estratégicas: petróleo, gas, energía eléctrica, energías renovables y creación de empresas mixtas, proyección que debe llevar a la creación de polos de refinación petrolera y petroquímica en la región. Venezuela ofreció garantizar sus necesidades energéticas durante los próximos 200 años. La tercera cumbre de PETROCARIBE abre nuevas opciones de integración para la región a partir de acuerdos que buscan garantizar la soberanía energética mediante la cooperación. Con apenas dos años de creada, la agrupación energética presenta ya una creciente relación de logros entre 16 países, incluyendo a Nicaragua y Haití que firmaron su adhesión ayer. Con un área de influencia de un millón 475 mil 142 kilómetros cuadrados y una población de 65,7 millones de habitantes, PETROCARIBE reafirmó la orientación de integración energética como instrumento de una alianza económica, política y estratégica.
