Video Essay: Digital Pharma East 2010
2010-10-22 13:21:00 I took a lot of video while at the Digital Pharma East 2010 conference this week in Philadelphia. I put this video wrap-up video really fast so that I could share this with all of you. (Apologize for all the non-ideal lighting. Hey, I'm not a videographer lol) The music is "Goodbye Philadelphia" by Peter Cincotti. I also invite you to read Post #1 and Post #2 from the meeting along with Doctor Anonymous Show 190. Thanks for a great meeting!

Panel: Digital Pharma East 2010
2010-10-20 20:09:00 I'm going to be leaving Philadelphia later today completing my time at Digital Pharma East 2010. I'd like to thank the organizers for asking me to be on a panel talking about the interface of pharma with physicians. The topic of this panel was similar to the discussion at Digital Pharma West this past summer. It was a very good discussion with interaction from the audience. The bottom line is - as of right now - even though docs are using mobile and smartphones a lot, physicians are not on social media. The question kept keeping up as far as, "How can docs access pharma in the internet space?" The answer is that you just can't, because docs are not on social. One point that was brought up was putting technology into the physician workflow. For example, putting things like pharma links into something like the EMR. In addition, wouldn't it be nice for me to see in the side bar whether the med I'm considering is on formulary or not on formulary. How about putting a link in my EM...

Update: Digital Pharma East 2010
2010-10-20 17:24:00 I'm having a great time here in Philadelphia at Digital Pharma East 2010. I'd like to thank the conference organizers for asking me to take part in the conference. I'll talk about the panel that I was on during a separate post. Usually during a meeting like this, I get to meet a lot of great people. And, I know that I'm going to probably offend someone if I don't mention everyone in this post. For that, I apologize. However, for me, the highlight during the conference was meeting Berci Mesko, MD who is the founder of Webicina and ScienceRoll.com. He spent 24 hours traveling from Hungary to take part in the conference. I remember interviewing Berci in the early days of The Doctor Anonymous Show. And, he woke up at about 2 or 3am to talk to me live from Hungary. We had a great conversation about social media. He told me that my blog and my internet radio show is a part of the curriculum for his Internet In Medicine University Course. We discussed me recording a video for his st...

Digital Pharma East 2010
2010-10-19 03:38:00 I'm going to Philadelphia for two days this week to be a part of what is called "The Most Innovative Event In Pharma History." It is called Digital Pharma East put on by Exl Pharma. Back at the end on June, I was asked to attend DigPharm West in San Francisco. I definitely learned a lot by going to that meeting. I encourage you to check out my blog post of when I was there. I'm going to be part of two panel discussions during this conference. The first one will be on Tuesday at 2:15pm. The title in the program is "Mobile Messaging To Health Care Providers." In this panel, will discuss "ways that mobile devices impact clinical workflow" and "how life sciences can use the mobile channels to provide value to the provider." The second session will be on Wednesday at 9:30am. The title is "The Changing Landscape Of Pharma/Physician Relationships." I'm on this panel with none other than @Doctor_V. If you would like to see the full schedule, check out the link here. One person I'm r...

Obama Pharma Deal - A Surprising Political Alliance
2009-08-11 23:35:00 A promise by the pharmaceutical industry to save the nation $80 billion over a decade in exchange for protection from further givebacks under health care reform pending in Congress was confirmed recently by the White House. Apparently, the pharmaceutical companies got spooked by action in the House that would give the feds negotiating authority for drug prices and bigger rebates from the industry. So the industry got an explicit affirmation of protection from deeper cuts. The trade group PhRMA explained the quid pro quo -- drugmakers stepped up first with a cost-saving pledge, and, in return, got "a rock-solid deal" not to make further cuts in prescription drug prices beyond the $80 billion. The White House confirmed the deal. Neither party mentioned what is apparently a side deal - drug companies will bankroll a TV ad campaign in support of health care reform. The ads would bolster the administration's plans to remake health care and expand insurance coverage to nearly 50 milli...

Possible Cure for Diabetes Found, Ignored by Big Pharma
2009-01-27 09:49:00 Irving Weissman discovered a treatment 12 years ago that might have saved the lives of thousands of women with advanced breast cancer, but pharmaceutical companies werenât interested in developing the therapy. Though that interest is finally being reignited, Weissman doesnât pull any punches. âI hate to say I told you so,â he said.Weissman is a professor of pathology & developmental biology at Stanford University, spoke Wednesday & Thursday as part of the Columbia University Department of Religionâs Bampton Lecture series. The lecture series is modeled after a centuries-old Oxford series of the same name, & invites famous authorities in their respective fields to give talks on various issues of interest to the religious community. In Wednesdayâs lecture, Weissman laid out the conceptual foundation of his workâthat stem cells are rare, self-renewing, & can regenerate body tissues. Weissman repeatedly expressed frustration that while plenty of of his discoveries seemed to...

Dabur Pharma: Is it undervalued?
2008-04-22 00:02:00 By Priya Nigam?Consolidation? has been the name of the game across the world this year. The news so far in 2008 has been dotted by mergers and acquisitions. Despite the US credit crisis and the tight global financial situation, the value of M&A deals this year has surged passed the $1 trillion mark. Closer to home, however, the story has been different. In India, the value of M&A deals has plummeted almost 72% year-on-year. This is notwithstanding Tata Motors Ltd?s offer to take over Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford Motor Co.Another interesting deal in the Indian market involves the offer to buy a 73.3% control of oncology major Dabur Pharma. The company has announced that its promoters (the Burman family) and certain other stockholders have agreed to sell their shares to Singapore-based Fresenius Kabi Pte Ltd for Rs76.50 per share. Fresenius Kabi is a 100% subsidiary of the $12 billion German healthcare group Fresenius SE. The deal, which costs the global giant Rs878.2 crore...

EXCISE ON PHARMA; LOAD ON CONSUMER
2008-03-22 08:02:00 In a first-of-its-kind move, the drug price regulator asked pharmaceutical companies to pass on the benefit of the recent excise duty cut to consumers even on medicines that are outside government’s price control. This will reduce prices by 4.58% on brands that account for three fourth of the Rs 33,000-crore domestic pharmaceutical market. While intervening in the control-free segment of the market for the first time to emphasise that excise cut benefit should be passed on to consumers, the price regulator said emphatically that companies “must” reduce prices. The regulator also said it will use a public interest clause in the drug pricing law to enforce Monday’s order. Finance minister P Chidambaram had halved the excise duty on all medicines from 16 % to 8 % in this year’s budget. Excise duty will now be levied on 64.5% of the MRP instead of 57.5% earlier. This works out to a 4.58% cut in the MRP on all medicines. Drug makers have to s...
