On Friday, John Sickels' guest on "Down On The Farm Friday" was Philadelphia Phillies Director of Minor Leagues Steve Noworyta.  Here is a rundown of some of the top Phillies prospects discussed and the letter grade Mr. Sickels gave them in his The Baseball Prospect Book 2008 along with a blurb if the name is unfamiliar [to me]. Some MLB playoff thoughts -I didn't think it would be possible, but I'm actually watching playoff baseball. I guess I'm almost over the Mets "long national nightmare". Thanks Adds for the soothing words of comfort.The Phillies are down 2-0 already to the Colorado Rockies. Weren't the Rockies supposed to be up for contraction a few years ago? If not, they should have been. I think maybe two people in Colorado really cares about that team.Speaking of the Phillies, going back to the year 2001 they have gone 86-76, 80-81, 86-76, 86-76, 88-74, 85-77, and then this year 89-73. I guess it took that elusive 89th win to finally cross the threshold. Talk about consistency though. How many other teams have had that many winning seasons in a row without making the playoffs? I am very thankful to see that team of the Phillies look so upset today. They could not hit Rockies pitcher, Jeff Francis. The Phillies sent staff ace Cole Hamels to the hill. Hamels was nearly perfect, except for the 2nd inning. The Rockies got 3 base hits and scored 3 runs. It was the only base hits and runs allowed for Hamels in his 6 2/3 innings of work.Francis was dealing right from the start. He fanned the first four Phillies he faced. He went 6 innings, giving up only those 2 runs while striking out 8 batters. It was a great performance on his behalf and he has now given his team a 1-0 lead in the series.Now the Phillies are playing with their backs up against the wall (thank God). They are now facing a must win in Game 2. They will turn to pitcher, Kyle Kendrick, who went 10-4 this season with a 3.87 ERA. Talk about saving my weekend! After the Gator's crushing loss to Auburn things were pretty glum sports-wise (yeah, I know, USF won and that's awesome, really, but I can't become a fan overnight). It took the Phillies the entire 162 game schedule but they clinched the East Sunday night. I'm totally psyched about the playoff too, the Phils are peaking at just the right time!

What a roller coaster ride it has been this month being a Mets fan. Entering this month I thought for certain I would be taking my girlfriend to a Mets playoff game this year. ...I have a wild solution to the wild card.But first... I've been wanting to spew vomit all over the place for the last few weeks. I mean how much more can I take as a sports fan?Notre Dame (not my alma mater, but since I am Irish Catholic I claim the right to root for them)...is 0-4. The for worst start in 120 years. Ugh.The New York Giants - They made a nice little come back against the 'Skins, but the first two weeks, the defense gave up 80 points in two games. The first them their defense has been so futile since the early 1970's.And then there are the New York Mets. Ah, my Mets. This is a team that just a few weeks ago were in position to wrap up the NL East with ease. Tonight, after giving up a five run lead to the Nats, with the Phillies leading the Braves, the Mets might not even make the playoffs!!So yea, it has not been a cheery time to be a sports fan. Wow, where did that win come from? It wasn?t a brand new Phillie that provided the spark as I thought, but it was another amazing finish. Jayson Werth?s 3-run blast into the upper deck of left field to bring the Phils within one run was certainly reminiscent of the Russell Branyan shot. More impressive though was the Phillies bullpen which salvaged Kyle Lohse?s pitiful two inning performance as Durbin, Davis, Condrey, Romero (W), Gordon, and Myers (S) combined for seven scoreless. The Phillies now have 47th come-from-behind wins. That is the most in the majors and with 83 wins overall, that means the Phils come-from-behind in more than half their games (57%). Elsewhere in the National League, the Marlins held off a Met rally to escape with a win in ten innings. As fans were walking out of RFK last night, the concourses erupted when we found out the Fish had tied it in the ninth. I expect there to be even more fans at the stadium this weekend - you can?t beat $5 tickets. Unfortunat...

A few weeks ago after the Mets lost four straight to the Phillies, I said that it was time for them to "stand their ground" and prevent further "free fall". Of course those quotes came from Tom Petty's repertoire. Not only did they "stand their ground" but they went to down to Atlanta with a "Damn the Torpedo's" full speed ahead attitude.Over the past two weeks they have begun to run away with the division. They have won 10 of 12 games including 5 of 6 from the Atlanta Braves. They tied the season series against the Braves. They have built their lead against the Phillies to 7, and now have a magic number of only 11. The countdown can begin towards a second division championship in a row.Soon, once the division has been clinched, the Mets can turn their attention to doing what they could not do last year. A friend who is a die hard Phillies fan, as well as every other sporting team from Philadelphia, forward me an e-mail exchange he had from a fellow Philadelphia sports fan. I had to clean up the language a bit, but I thought it was worth posting. In the first e-mail, the writer is frustrated that his friend went to last night's Phillies/Mets game.So jealous!! You picked a hell of a game to go to. Me, like a sucker ponied up the 15 bucks to buy the MLB online package so I could watch the games this month. I watched it last night. With there star 2nd baseman returning to the lineup yesterday the Phillies crushed the Mets 9-2. With homeruns from Chase Utley, Tadahito Iguchi, and Met killer Pat Burrell and excellent pitching from J.D. Durbin the Phils actually looked like a playoff team. Willie Randolph said this about Chase Utley, "He's an excellent player. I'm not looking forward to seeing him."The Braves destroyed the Marlins 13-2 behind Brian McCann's grand slam and a 4-6 night off the bat of Matt Diaz.
