The Drunk Jays Fans Guide To Hating The Philadelphia Phillies
2008-05-16 16:55:00 It's the most wonderful time of the year. The weekend we've all been waiting for. Yes, I'm talking about Interleague Rivalry Weekend. This is the part of the season where we once again ask ourselves, "Is there a more loathsome sports town than Philadelphia?" It's like a city comprised entirely of Queen Street East, without The Beaches or some of the more charming shops in Leslieville. You may be thinking that it's hard to get into a city to city rivalry without a token wager between the Mayors of each land. Believe it or not, there is no bet wherein if the Jays lose, we owe Philadelphia a smug sense of superiority over the rest of Canada, and if the Phillies lose, they owe Toronto some violent crime.Come on, get on this municipalities. Wagers are what make rivalries interesting.Actually, I'll never understand how MLB decided that Philadelphia and Toronto had any sort of rivalry whatsoever, but what's done is done, and as good Jays fans, it's now our duty to hate the fucki...

Philadelphia Phillies Prospect Update
2008-04-27 14:57:00 On Friday, John Sickels' guest on "Down On The Farm Friday" was Philadelphia Phillies Director of Minor Leagues Steve Noworyta. Here is a rundown of some of the top Phillies prospects discussed and the letter grade Mr. Sickels gave them in his The Baseball Prospect Book 2008 along with a blurb if the name is unfamiliar [to me]. LHP Joe Savory B: His control issues were a result of "tight hips". If he pitches weel, he can be in AA in June LHP Josh Outman B: Headed towards middle relief in the majors RHP Carlos Carrasco B: Added maturity this year and sharpened his curveball. Could be called up to Philly if a starter is needed RHP Kyle Drabek C+: Appreciates what he lost after blowing his arm. Should be back on mound in August and come fast RHP Julian Sampson C+: Pitching at 92-95 and touching 97 could have gone in in second round [of 2007 draft]..a nice coup for the Phillies, and he could be/should be one of their best pitching prospects within two yea...

2008 Draft: Philadelphia Phillies
2008-04-19 15:01:00 We'll be looking at the 2008 draft over the next few months here at MLBTR. Mike Arbuckle, the Phillies assistant GM, took some questions from fans regarding the draft and the team's farm system. Here are the highlights: When asked what positions the Phils are seeking, Arbuckle gave the right answer. "You have to be very careful about trying to draft toward a particular position, simply because of the time it takes to develop players to get to the big leagues...So you try to draft the best available player in each round, the guy that we would view as having the highest ceiling." On the slotting system: "I think generally we have been a club and are a club that tries to do what's best for the industry." The Phillies have generally stayed within the vicinity of slot. On college players vs. high school players: "In comparing high school to college players, generally the college player is nearer to being the finished product. So you can't project as much on a college player as you wo...

2007-10-05 02:55:00 Some MLB playoff thoughts -I didn't think it would be possible, but I'm actually watching playoff baseball. I guess I'm almost over the Mets "long national nightmare". Thanks Adds for the soothing words of comfort. The Phillies are down 2-0 already to the Colorado Rockies. Weren't the Rockies supposed to be up for contraction a few years ago? If not, they should have been. I think maybe two people in Colorado really cares about that team.Speaking of the Phillies, going back to the year 2001 they have gone 86-76, 80-81, 86-76, 86-76, 88-74, 85-77, and then this year 89-73. I guess it took that elusive 89th win to finally cross the threshold. Talk about consistency though. How many other teams have had that many winning seasons in a row without making the playoffs? Lets just say they were due.Going back to the Rockies. As my friend (a Mets fan) wrote: Kaz-fricken-Matsui!! 3-4 with 5 RBIs and only a single shy of the cycle!!! 2007 MLB Playoff Predictions (NLDS & ALDS)
2007-10-04 02:49:00 NLDSColorodo Rockies over Philadelphia Phillies in 5 My heart says Rockies but my head says Philadelphia. I would give the edge to the Phillies based on pitching. Both have tremendous offenses though. I'm a little late with this and the Rockies have already beat Cole Hammels so I will go out on a limb and stay with my heart on this one. The Rockies ride their momentum and beat the Phillies in 5.Arizona Diamondbacks over Chicago Cubs in 5The Cubs were hot down the stretch and have a great line-up but Arizona is built for the playoffs with great pitching and great defense. Their bullpen is leagues better than Chicago's and it will show.ALDSBoston Red Sox over Las Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 3 gamesI think the Red Sox will sweep. Rockies Beat Phillies In Game 1 [David Stefanini]
2007-10-04 00:48:00 I am very thankful to see that team of the Phillies look so upset today. They could not hit Rockies pitcher, Jeff Francis. The Phillies sent staff ace Cole Hamels to the hill. Hamels was nearly perfect, except for the 2nd inning. The Rockies got 3 base hits and scored 3 runs. It was the only base hits and runs allowed for Hamels in his 6 2/3 innings of work.Francis was dealing right from the start. He fanned the first four Phillies he faced. He went 6 innings, giving up only those 2 runs while striking out 8 batters. It was a great performance on his behalf and he has now given his team a 1-0 lead in the series. Now the Phillies are playing with their backs up against the wall (thank God). They are now facing a must win in Game 2. They will turn to pitcher, Kyle Kendrick, who went 10-4 this season with a 3.87 ERA. Opposing him will be Franklin Morales, who is 3-2 with a 3.43 ERA.http://img68.imageshack.us/-my.php?image=amerlegendslogo5wj-.gif

Mets Win, Phillies Lose, Setting Up A Great Final Day [David Stefanini]
2007-09-30 08:32:00 What a roller coaster ride it has been this month being a Mets fan. Entering this month I thought for certain I would be taking my girlfriend to a Mets playoff game this year. In the middle of the month I found myself saying, its ok they will turn on the jets and start pulling away any day now. I was upset that the Mets allowed the Phillies to shrink the lead down to 2 games. Right now, at the end of the month, I am overjoyed that they have pulled even with the Phillies, a predicament I never thought I'd be happy about. With the Mets 13-0 victory today and the Phillies loss to the Nats 4-2, the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies enter the final day of the regular season with identical records. The scenario is simple when it comes down to the NL East. If the Mets win and the Phillies lose, the Mets are in; and visa-versa for the Phillies. If they both win/lose, then a one game playoff will be played on Monday at Philadelphia to determine the champion.Tomorrow, the Mets will send...

2007-09-27 03:19:00 ...I have a wild solution to the wild card. But first... I've been wanting to spew vomit all over the place for the last few weeks. I mean how much more can I take as a sports fan?Notre Dame (not my alma mater, but since I am Irish Catholic I claim the right to root for them)...is 0-4. The for worst start in 120 years. Ugh.The New York Giants - They made a nice little come back against the 'Skins, but the first two weeks, the defense gave up 80 points in two games. The first them their defense has been so futile since the early 1970's.And then there are the New York Mets. Ah, my Mets. This is a team that just a few weeks ago were in position to wrap up the NL East with ease. Tonight, after giving up a five run lead to the Nats, with the Phillies leading the Braves, the Mets might not even make the playoffs!!So yea, it has not been a cheery time to be a sports fan. I've been almost avoiding the blog in the hopes that all this bad luck with my teams might just turn around....

Bloggers React to Mets Decline, Phillies Rise [J. Mark English]
2007-09-21 15:35:00 Wow, where did that win come from? It wasn?t a brand new Phillie that provided the spark as I thought, but it was another amazing finish. Jayson Werth?s 3-run blast into the upper deck of left field to bring the Phils within one run was certainly reminiscent of the Russell Branyan shot. More impressive though was the Phillies bullpen which salvaged Kyle Lohse?s pitiful two inning performance as Durbin, Davis, Condrey, Romero (W), Gordon, and Myers (S) combined for seven scoreless. The Phillies now have 47th come-from-behind wins. That is the most in the majors and with 83 wins overall, that means the Phils come-from-behind in more than half their games (57%). Elsewhere in the National League, the Marlins held off a Met rally to escape with a win in ten innings. As fans were walking out of RFK last night, the concourses erupted when we found out the Fish had tied it in the ninth. I expect there to be even more fans at the stadium this weekend - you can?t beat $5 tickets. Unfortunat...

7 / 11 is Heaven for the New York Mets [J. Mark English]
2007-09-13 04:14:00 A few weeks ago after the Mets lost four straight to the Phillies, I said that it was time for them to "stand their ground" and prevent further "free fall". Of course those quotes came from Tom Petty's repertoire. Not only did they "stand their ground" but they went to down to Atlanta with a "Damn the Torpedo's" full speed ahead attitude.Over the past two weeks they have begun to run away with the division. They have won 10 of 12 games including 5 of 6 from the Atlanta Braves. They tied the season series against the Braves. They have built their lead against the Phillies to 7, and now have a magic number of only 11. The countdown can begin towards a second division championship in a row.Soon, once the division has been clinched, the Mets can turn their attention to doing what they could not do last year. Advance beyond the NLCS, and win a World Series for the first time since 1986http://img68.imageshack.us/-my.php?image=amerlegendslogo5wj-.gif

2007-08-30 23:19:00 "Met Fans Your Season has Come"...Thats what the public relations office of the New York Mets keeps reminding us. If this is the season that was meant to be, then what was meant to be is turning into a nightmare.Last Saturday the Mets, despite their problems at home, held a comfortable seven game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies. A mere five days later, that lead has been cut to two, and the red hot Phillies have found their swagger going into the final month of the season. As summer gives way to fall, the Mets are playing the part of a dying leaf, violently falling back towards earth. The Mets lost in four disturbing games to the Phillies. They were blown out 9-2 in game one. Their pitching staff could barely contain the potent Phillies offense as the Mets gave up 18 hits in eight innings. On Tuesday the Mets showed a little more moxy with Tom Glavine on the mound, but as soon as he left the game with a 2-0 nothing lead, fortune favored the Phillies. They tied the game 2-2 on ...

Vexations from two Phillies' Fans [J. Mark English]
2007-08-29 23:14:00 A friend who is a die hard Phillies fan, as well as every other sporting team from Philadelphia, forward me an e-mail exchange he had from a fellow Philadelphia sports fan. I had to clean up the language a bit, but I thought it was worth posting. In the first e-mail, the writer is frustrated that his friend went to last night's Phillies/Mets game.So jealous!! You picked a hell of a game to go to. Me, like a sucker ponied up the 15 bucks to buy the MLB online package so I could watch the games this month. I watched it last night. The Phillies are like the eternal c**k tease. They are like this chick at a bar that you try to chat up, you buy her drinks, she leads you on with that glimmer of hope that you might take her home and sleep with her, only you know from past experiences you are going to Wawa's alone before you hit your place. And right now I'm buying her drinks even though I know I'm going to get a junior Italian Hoagie and a bottle of iced tea before I nestle into...

MLB: Rounding Third [Jay Moussab]
2007-08-28 23:49:00 With there star 2nd baseman returning to the lineup yesterday the Phillies crushed the Mets 9-2. With homeruns from Chase Utley, Tadahito Iguchi, and Met killer Pat Burrell and excellent pitching from J.D. Durbin the Phils actually looked like a playoff team. Willie Randolph said this about Chase Utley, "He's an excellent player. I'm not looking forward to seeing him."The Braves destroyed the Marlins 13-2 behind Brian McCann's grand slam and a 4-6 night off the bat of Matt Diaz. Lance Cormier gets the win as Scott Olsen gets the loss.In the AL East the Yanks get spanked by the Detroit Tigers by a score of 16-0. That was the worst road loss for the Yanks since 1907. The Yanks now face the Red Sox for a 3 game series. The Yanks are now 8 games behind in the East and 2 in the Wild Card. The AL West might be decided this week as the Mariners are hosting the Angels who are now leading the division by 2 games after beating the Mariners last night by a score of 6-0. Hot hitting Garrett A...
