Electrolux is Cooking Up Some Philanthropy
2008-05-04 19:05:00
Have you seen those new commercials with the young and beautiful Kelly Ripa buzzing around her kitchen, appeasing wee ones and preparing for adult guests while cooking on a new state-of-the-art-stove? Ripa is the mother of three small children, the Star of Regis and Kelly and a Soap Opera diva. The commercials showcase a glam kitchen with a glam star. However, despite the fact that most women don’t whiz around the kitchen in pumps and full make-up, the commercials resonate with most multi-tasking moms (OK that’s a major oxymoron). The kitchen is central to all homes and good appliances make the job easier and more enjoyable. Electrolux is showcasing the popular star for the launch of their new North American premium kitchen appliance line showcasing appliances with European flair. Ripa is shown cooking on a chic cook top that boils water in 90 seconds! Electrolux offers an energy efficient Induction Hybrid cook top in both 30 and 36 inch models. Induction heating is new a...
Athletes and Philanthropy
2008-04-11 21:36:00
I was just reading Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling's blog (www.38pitches.com) and it got me thinking about the relationship between athletes and philanthropy, because Curt is an avid supporter of charities that deal with ALS.  Although some athletes participate in charitable activity because they are forced to by their teams or leagues, I believe most contribute because they truly enjoy it.  Also, many athletes understand that they have been truly blessed to be in the position that they are, and that helping out those less fortunate than they are is a very easy decision for them.Athletes in this country are role models to millions of children, and these children will take notice to the charitable work that the athletes do.  Helping children realize the importance of helping out those in need at a young age is very important, and athletes have the opportunity to achieve this. There are two organizations listed on our site that were started by star athle...

Social Justice Philanthropy
2008-03-17 15:11:00
Anne Glickman, 34, inherited several million dollars in stock on her 18th birthday. She preferred not to think or talk about the money into her 20s because, she said, as a political activist, her wealth was a bit inconvenient. "I felt like I was in hiding," she said. "Here I was, an activist thinking about class and race, but I wasn't really factoring in my own personal wealth," she said. "I decided to give away a large number. It was scary, but I just had to do it." So far, Glickman said, she has given away $1.2 million. She is part of a movement of relatively young American heirs who practice what they call social justice philanthropy, which emphasizes giving to small, local groups.Karen Pittelman, 32, a singer in a punk band, said she inherited $3.5 million seven years ago and gave away all but $15,000. Jamie Schweser, 35, author of the novel "Tales of a Punk Rock Nothing," said he inherited $1 million eight years ago and gave away three quarters of it. So what motivates p...

Grassroots Philanthropy
2008-03-06 16:01:00
I would like to bring your attention to a thought-provoking book I just finished reading, Grassroots Philanthropy: Field Notes of a Maverick Grantmaker which was written by Bill Somerville the President of Philanthropic Ventures Foundation, with Fred Setterberg.I have to say, this was probably one of the most inspiring books I have ever read on the subject of Philanthropy. Bill Somerville, is an extremely compassionate individual who cares deeply for the world of giving.Bill has worked in the non-profit world for over 48 years, and in his book he shares some of his vast experience with us. I found his personal stories fascinating and his ideas for improving the world of Philanthropy inspiring! In one section of the book Bill talks about the Love of Humanity and breaks down the word Philanthropy into it's literal definition. Philanthropy - philos, Love; anthropy, Mankind. He suggests that Funders take time to go out into the community, to seek out potential change agents, and get ...

Bill Gates on Corporate Philanthropy--Posner
2008-02-10 22:25:00
I became acquainted with Bill Gates when some years ago I mediated (unsuccessfully) the Justice Department's antitrust suit against Microsoft. I was reassured to discover that the world's wealthiest person is extremely intelligent and surprisingly unpretentious. But I am disappointed by the recent speech on "creative capitalism" that he gave at the World Economic Forum in Davos last month. Almost half the world's population is extremely poor, subsisting on less than $2 a day; a billion are thoug
Private Philanthropy is Bad for Socialism
2008-01-28 00:00:00
-By Thomas E. Brewton The New York Times is distressed that private philanthropists can give money to any charity they choose. Only a socialistic Federal government is capable, says the Times, of making wise decisions about dispensing money to achieve social justice. The flip side of American private largess is the stinginess ...

??? Philanthropy
2008-01-25 22:34:00
Its that time again! My fraternity brothers and i are once again going homeless for the night [it's going to be 13 degrees] for philanthropy work. We are conducting our 2nd annual SPE Box City:"The gentlemen from Lambuth University?s local chapter of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity are once again sleeping in boxes outside of Northside United Methodist in order to raise donations for the homeless. They will be setting up around 4:30 PM on Friday, January 25th and leaving at 8:00 AM on Saturday, January 26th. Donations of clothing, food, money, or anything else that can benefit the homeless will be accepted throughout this period of time and will be taken to RIFA that Saturday morning.Last year, these men raised over 200 dollars and received over 1,500 items to donate to RIFA. This year, they are hoping to increase those amounts tenfold with the help of the Jackson community. By spending the night outside in nothing but boxes, they are hoping to bring the situation of the homeless...

2008-01-19 18:03:00
Here is an interesting news for people who think that Google is evil and only wants to make money from advertisements. Actually there is another side of the picture. Google Inc. has recently announced a corporate giving initiative of nearly $ 30 million. The basic focus of this giveaway is the massive philanthropic endeavor that erases the usual boundaries between the for-profit and nonprofit worlds.Larry Brilliant, executive director of Google.org, on running the Internet giant's philanthropic arm.The major areas of focus for the recently announced giveaways are:To create systems to help predict and prevent disease pandemicsTo empower the poor with information about public servicesTo create jobs by investing in small- and mid-size businesses in the developing worldTo accelerate the commercialization of plug-in cars (already a focus area for past giveaways)To make renewable energy cheaper than coal (already a focus area for past giveaways)According to the Foundation Center, a nonpr...

Denzel's Philanthropy
2007-08-23 15:54:00
Denzel Washington and his family recently visited the troops at Brook Army Medical Center, in San Antonio, Texas (BAMC).This is where soldiers who have been evacuated from Germany come to be hospitalized in the United States, especially burn victims. There are some buildings there called Fisher Houses. The Fisher House is a Hotel where soldiers' families can stay, for little or no charge, while their soldier is staying in the Hospital.BAMC has quite a few of these houses on base, but as you can imagine, they are almost filled most of the time. While Denzel Washington was visiting BAMC, they gave him a tour of one of the Fisher Houses. He asked how much one of them would cost to build. He took his check book out and wrote a check for the full amount right there on the spot. The soldiers overseas were amazed to hear this story and want to get the word out to the American public, because it warmed their hearts to hear it.That's my boy! :)Tags: Denzel Washingto...

Some devotees of Sathya Sai Baba - the ’God’ worshipped by so many of India’s top power brokers (and others beyond) who faces worldwide accusations of large-scale, serial sexual molestation of boys and young men - claim that he could not possibly offend, if he ever did, because of his age and physical incapacity, and that therefore his current ...

For more lavish pics of Sai Baba’s Imperial splendour, see below. (Are we seeing the rise or decline of the Showman Empire?) In the director-writer-actor Orson Welles’s great movie classic Kane, one can, it is true, note certain differences between the U.S. newspaper proprietor William Randolf Hearst and Welles’s and Joseph L. Philanthropy and Couture Are BFF
2007-02-14 21:37:10
Once again Ebay is giving us another opportunity shop and benefit those less fortunate while doing so. Now you don't have to feel so bad spending five hundred dollars on shoes, because somewhere out there a needy individual in Sudan will reap the benefit of your splurge. Malcolm Harris has organized a team to fight for another worthy cause. "DesignersForDarfur" is a collaboration of the fashion community, kinda like Superfriends only with better outfits, if you can imagine. Together, creators of couture will raise funds to save the Darfur Coalition. A collection that includes such fashion powerhouses as Chado Ralph Rucci, L.A.M.B, Heatherette, Naeem Khan, Jeremy Scott, Sue Wong and Mary Ping is being auctioned at this very moment. The DesignersForDarfur Fashion show, hosted by Steve Madden, wrapped up New York's fashion week. Madden was gracious enough not only to host the show, but he also provided the footwear for all the designers. Currently, each outfit is being sol...
