Philip Glass - Solo Piano
2008-01-10 21:38:00
American composer Philip Glass returns to the Sony Classical label this Fall with the release of the original soundtrack recording of Naqoyqatsi, completing a trilogy of visionary films ? beginning with Koyaanisqatsi (1983) and Powaqqatsi (1988) ? on which the composer has collaborated with the American filmmaker Godfrey Reggio. The Naqoyqatsi soundtrack also represents the Glass?s first collaboration with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who is soloist throughout the score. Born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 31, 1937, Philip Glass discovered music in his father?s radio repair shop that carried a line of records in addition to servicing radios. To figure out why recordings of great chamber works sold poorly, Ben Glass would take them home to play for his three children. Philip rapidly became familiar with Beethoven quartets, Schubert sonatas, Shostakovich symphonies and other music then considered ?offbeat.? It was not until he was in his upper teens that Glass encountered more ?standard? clas...

Koyaanisqatsi
2008-01-05 21:18:00
KOYAANISQATSI, Reggio's debut as a film director and producer, is the first film of the QATSI trilogy. The title is a Hopi Indian word meaning "life out of balance." Created between 1975 and 1982, the film is an apocalyptic vision of the collision of two different worlds -- urban life and technology versus the environment. The musical score was composed by Philip Glass. This film should be seen in a movie theater; it is a work of art.The Swedish documentary The Planet from 2006 is quite similar to Koyaanisqatsi in its visual style.

Festival de Otoño: David Sylvian y Philip Glass
2007-10-28 10:01:00
Sunshine Film Ignites the Sun
2007-10-23 06:35:00
Danny Boyle's Sunshine is a surprisingly effective appeal to identify with suicide bombers. But in his film Boyle has engineered a narrative that frames secular science as the True Belief that drives the faithful. Sunshine tells the story of a future earth that circles a slowly dying star, and a concomitant mission to save the world by dropping a bomb into the center of the sun, reigniting its dimming burn. It is easy, watching Sunshine, to begin to imagine sacrificing one's own life for such a cause. The anxiety around sun worship is profoundly old. It haunts the very earliest moments of monotheism (see Philip Glass's Akhnaten). The Abrahamic tradition grew up in the shadows of an ice age. These are stories from mankind's childhood, when the approach of the winter solstice must have accompanied a grim anxiety - that the sun would not return. Sun worship is the ur heresy - the original distraction. The old testament made Sol a creature like ourselves: "Sun and moon fall down b...

PHILIP GLASS - The Ultimate Philip Glass Composer...
2007-08-04 21:13:00
PHILIP GLASS - The Ultimate Philip Glass Composer-conductor-multi-instru-mentalist Philip Glass was born January 31, 1937, in Baltimore and is best known for his cinematic collaborations. The classically trained, innovative musician developed nontraditional musical tastes while transcribing Indian music and traveling across North Africa and India in the mid-?60s. Glass emerged in the early ?70s with the Philip Glass Ensemble in the Max?s Kansas City, avant-guard New York scene. (The Guide) Similar sound: Laurie Anderson, genere repetitive multi-intrumentalist.Although some critics complain that his song remains too much the same, composer Philip Glass?s simple, repetitive modern classical music possesses a uniquely catalytic power when in league with some sort of theater ? whether it?s opera or film, or a combination of the two. The five-disc box set Philip on Film reinforces Glass?s stature as a cinematic collaborator, underscoring how his music subtly adapts according to the chall...

GTA and Philip Glass

Watch this video at YouTube Andy and I were talking about the cult film Koyaanisqatsi the other day, and it reminded me of why you should never underestimate game designers, Rockstar specifically. Koyaanisqatsi was a 1982 cult documentary, as far as you can call a film without any dialog a documentary. It featured mostly time lapse and ...
