The Golden Compass AKA Northern Lights
2007-12-09 12:51:00 Let’s be clear: translating a book to the screen is hard, really hard and it shouldn’t be underestimated. Things you can get away with in a book you simply can’t on film for a range of reasons. It’s not the same medium, you have less time and, in some cases, things that are palatable in ...
Ban books? Ban ideas, ban imagination, ban a future
2007-12-09 00:26:00 To ban a book is to ban an idea. Some ideas are good; some are bad. But good and bad are judgments each of us must be free to make ? and learn to make. At S&R ? as do so many people in diverse media everywhere ? we discuss ideas and express our opinions about them. We try to not suppress the ideas with which we disagree. Rather, we point out what we see as flaws and attempt to persuade others by providing better ideas. The current flap diverting our attention from more pressing matters involves “The Golden Compass,” a movie derived from the first book in a trilogy called ?His Dark Materials? written by Philip Pullman. His novels and the movie (review) have irritated the Catholic Church, which alleges a secularist agenda and fears the film would drive children toward Pullman’s books. The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, which has published a 23-page denunciation of the film, says: The Catholic League wants Christians to stay away from this movi...

To Compass or Not to Compass...
2007-12-02 06:33:00 by Nicole McIntyreI'm sure many of you have seen the advertisements for the movie titled The Golden Compass that is coming out next week. Before I had even heard of this movie (or series) I was getting forwards "verified by Snopes" that this movie pushes a watered down atheistic agenda. Then I was getting invited to Facebook groups telling me to boycott. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Christian and proud of it. But I like to do my research before I start boycotting and such. If I had listened in 1999, I would have never met Harry Potter. And for those of you who know me, I wear my "I heart Harry Potter" t-shirt proudly. I had never even heard of the trilogy by Philip Pullman. I must admit it's now fascinating me.By Pullman's own admission to the Sydney Morning Herald his books are controversial. "I've been surprised by how little criticism I've got. Harry Potter's been taking all the flak. I'm a great fan of J.K. Rowling, but the people- mainly from America's Bible Belt - who ...
The Golden Compass : Philip Pullman and his Roman Catholic Critics
2007-11-25 02:54:00 Roman Catholic spokespersons have been venting a lot recently over works of fiction they view as threatening in one way or another. The Da Vinci Code came in for Catholic criticism, as did the Harry Potter series. Now there is a new reason for them to get hot under the collar. In Ontario recently the Halton Catholic District School Board pulled an award winning childrens' book off the shelves of its libraries in response to complaints. The Golden Compass is part of a trilogy by British author Philip Pullman.A movie based on the book is due to be released next month, starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig. New Line Cinema is behind the production. They have departed somewhat from the text to avoid offending Catholics. Not that the Pullman books are explicitly anti-Catholic, but they could certainly be interpreted that way, especially in the light of key references in the books to what appears to be Catholic-like institutions, and statements Pullman has made that are unfriendly to "G...

Philip Pullman Interview
2007-10-28 15:55:00 Here is an interview from the Chicago Sun-Times with Philip Pullman, author of the His Dark Materials trilogy. I’m currently reading the books– I just finished the first one, The Golden Compass. Or rather, I’m listening to a wonderful audio production of the books while I work, narrated by the author with an excellent cast doing the dialogue for the characters. 2007-08-27 23:35:00 Ok slightly random post but I found something cool (although no doubt others have been there first). The Golden Compass (eek who renamed Pullman’s masterpiece?) the first installment of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials Trilogy is due out later this year. Lord knows what the filmic world will do to Pullman’s biting but enjoyable attack on ... |
