Marlins salvage split against Phillies (AP)
2009-09-23 00:11:00
Anibal Sanchez allowed two hits in eight innings to beat Philadelphia for the first time in five career decisions, and the Florida Marlins' 3-0 victory gave them a doubleheader split Tuesday. Joe Blanton gave up two hits in seven shutout innings to outpitch Marlins ace Josh Johnson in the first game, which Philadelphia won 9-3.

Joe Blanton said he approached his matchup against Josh Johnson like any other, and for the Philadelphia Phillies, that worked fine. Blanton allowed two hits in seven shutout innings to outpitch the Marlins' ace, and Philadelphia won the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday, 9-3. The victory reduced to five the Phillies' magic number for ...
Phillies end Hanson?s streak, top Braves (AP)
2009-09-20 20:44:00
The Philadelphia Phillies ended rookie Tommy Hanson's streak of 19 consecutive scoreless innings, beating Atlanta 4-2 Sunday and damaging the Braves' faint NL wild-card hopes. Brad Lidge pitched another shaky ninth inning but posted his 31st save in 41 chances. The NL East-leading Phillies took two of three in the series.

Pedro Martinez knew he wouldn't last long after straining his neck during a second-inning at-bat. Javier Vazquez outpitched an ailing Martinez, and the Atlanta Braves survived a shaky ninth inning to snap Philadelphia's six-game winning streak with a 6-4 victory over the Phillies on Saturday night.

Phillies at Cubs - 7:05pm CT -- Live Game Thread (WGN, ESPN)
2009-08-13 00:17:00
The game tonight is on WGN (and ESPN, but who cares), but if you tuned into WGN at 5:55pm tonight --- your very own (well, my very own) Cubbiejulie was just on WGN news promoting A League of Her Own and Chicago Now as a whole.  Thankfully, she wasn't bumped, so I didn't have to rough anyone up. As for tonight's game, let's just hope for the best, shall we?  Spellcheck is facing Pedro Martinez.  Sure, Martinez is 37 (which is NOT OLD, thank you very much) and coming off the DL, this is his Phillies debut, and his first appearance in nearly a year.  That said, this is still Pedro Martinez.  Fortunately, Mr. Martinez has an even record against the Cubs at 3-3. ...

The tipping point As you can see by my clever use of the scales above, I'm officially declaring this series the tipping point of the season. As of right now, we're 3 games back in the central, 3 back in the wild card race. We've got a three-game series against the Phils, then 3 games against the lowly Pirates AAA team. Meanwhile, the Cards have to play Cincy and then San Diego. By the time we get out of thesenext two series, we should have a pretty good idea of where we stand. Either we'll be holding tight in the thick of things, or we'll be 6 games in back of the Cards. In August. But never fear, help...

Oh, dammit. I hope you all enjoyed our little dalliance in DC, because tonight we have to play a real team. Unlike the Gnats, who are currently toiling at the bottom of the NL East, TWENTY-SIX games out of first place, the Phillies are firmly in charge of their division, up by 6.5 games. Alas, things HAVE seemed to have picked up lately, even if we were playing a team that would have trouble with the Kane County Cougars. More people are hitting the ball with their bats, the starting pitching continues to be strong, and even the bullpen seems to have gotten it sorted lately. Let's just hope it lasts, because I really fear for the emotional well-being...

Reigniting the Phillies/Mets Rivalry The New York Mets sure don’t need any extra motivation playing against the defending World Series champions. Daniel Murphy hit a two-run homer, Mike Pelfrey pitched 5 1/3 effective innings and the Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-4 on Friday night in the first meeting between the two rivals. Before the game, general manager ...

The biggest celebration in years will begin noon at 20th and Market , going towards South of Broad Street and end at the sports complex that houses Lincoln Financial Field and Citizens Bank Park. Parking will be limited, so if you can take SEPTA or PATCO to the city, that would be your best bet. Also get out there early. I was driving to work this morning and already saw people heading down there. If you planned on attending, behave yourself don't mess it up for everyone else! World Series 2008: Phillies Power Too Much for Rays Pitching
2008-10-27 13:50:00
Phillies Power Too Much for Rays Pitching Some text from our 2008 World Series Predictions The reason that I don?t like the Rays here is due to the starting pitching match-up… they love to give up the longball, Shields (24 in 215 IP), Garza (19 in 185) and Kazmir (23 in 152). Vegas odds have game one as ...
Phillies Win 2008 World Series Four Games To One
2008-10-27 10:31:00
Good early Monday morning, and this post's title will be the sports headline of Tuesday morning. The Rays have absolutely NO CHANCE of winning it all after losing game four by a score of 10-2. The Phillies lead the Rays three games to one and have a stranglehold on Tampa Bay. They were outpitched, outhit and outplayed in every way. The Phillies have the power and the arms to win it all, and they will. Tonight. So I figured to get a leg up on some other blogs by using that title. It'll be game one pitchers Hamels and Kazmir tonight with the first pitch at 8:29pm EDT. In Boston Red Sox news, Kevin Youkilis has been named the recipient of the 2008 Hank Aaron Award. Could this be a precurser to the MVP? I say yes! Congrats, Kevin. You are an invaluable member of the Red Sox and the powers-that-be should "lock you up" with a long term, lucrative deal. I sure hope so! We all do!!Have a wonderful Monday, enjoy game four tonight live from New York..oops....err, Philadelphia (Saturday Nigh...
Phillies Make The Rays Uncomfortable, Take 2-1 Lead in World Series
2008-10-26 17:32:00
It looks like no one in America is really watching this World Series; however, if you're missing it – you're missing some interesting baseball. The Phillies are now up 2-1 in the 2008 World Series as they beat the Rays, 5-4, thanks to a weak infield single – a dribbler along third bases – with the bases loaded by Carlos Ruiz that plated Eric Bruntlett. The frame started as J.P. Howell hit Bruntlett, and then he was relieved of by Grant Balfour. Only a minute later, Balfour would throw a wild pitch and Bruntlett advanced to second. After two intentional walks to both Shane Victorino and Greg Dobbs, the game would end a few minutes later. With the score tied at four, Evan Longoria tried in vain to scoop the ball and throw it home; but the ball sailed over Dioner Navarro's head and Bruntlett tapped home plate. The matchup on Saturday featured the sometimes overly emotional 24-year old Matt Garza versus Jamie Moyer, who should at 45 years old be considered a living legend. The mat...
Phillies Top Rays In World Series Game #3
2008-10-26 09:10:00
The Philadelphia Phillies scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday night in Philadelphia and won by a score of 5-4. They took a 2-1 series advantage over the Tampa Bays Rays. Matt Garza was not the unbeatable hurler who the Red Sox saw in game seven of their series, far from it. Tonight's game, again in Phillie, will start at 8:29 pm EDT and feature Sonnanstine against Blanton. Look for Philadelphia to take a commanding 3-1 lead in this soon-to-be over World Series. Hey, my prediction from yesterday was dead wrong so I might as well go out on a limb, WAY out, on this one. The only thing right about my last post was leaving open the possibility of the rain leaving the area sometime before midnight. I nailed that one and the game started with only an hour plus delay. The Rays probably wish it had continued to pour. And pour. And keep pouring. In Red Sox news, right now there isn't much. Little whispers about possible free agent intentions are just that, very soft, almo...

Phillies Upend Dodgers; Rays Shock The Formerly Invinicble Jon Lester
2008-10-14 17:25:00
The 2008 NLCS seems close to being wrapped up as the Philadelphia Phillies thanks to late homers by Shane Victorino -- who has seemed to be in the middle of everything -- and Matt Stair's long shot in the 8th led them over the Los Angeles Dodgers, 7-5.Tuesday's action had none of the drama of the previous night, and Philadelphia staged a dramatic comeback as the knocked up the Los Angeles bullpen in the latter half of the game. Derek Lowe was strong -- especially giving up two runs in the first inning -- and went only five innings; however, he kept the Dodgers in the game long for them to take the lead in the bottom of fifth by taking a 3-2 lead. Now, why he was taken out by Joe Torre early -- who knows (maybe it's the fact he pitched on 3 days rest); however, that decision might have cost the Dodgers.Joe Blanton -- the starting pitcher for the Phillies -- went five innings and gave up three runs, but it was Chad Durbin who opened up the flood gates by giving up a 2-run-homer to C...

2008-10-10 16:55:00
Last night, the Dodgers and Phillies played game one of the NLCS and everything came down to a fateful sixth inning. Los Angeles went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning, thanks to Manny Ramirez -- again -- with an RBI double; thereafter, Blake DeWitt plated Matt Kemp with an RBI.Derek Lowe had things in control in the sixth inning; however, Shane Victorino reached base on a error off Rafael Furcal, and the Chase Utley homered to tie the game. Two batters, Pat Burrell hit his third homer of the postseason -- a two-run shot -- to make the difference. Cole Hamels was shaky in the first, but kept things in order with yet another post-season start for the victory. Lowe was good, but his two mistakes -- homers to Utley and Burrel -- cost them the win.Like I said, if the Dodgers fall 2-0 in the series, it will be hard for them to come back. It was a very well played game yesterday night in the City of Brotherly Love, and I expect the same tonight in Beantown as the Red Sox and Rays begi...
