Reputedly producing up to 1580HP (1178kW) in qualifying form and a reliable 1100HP (820kW) in race trim, the spectacular Porsche 917/30 with its 5.4 litre turbocharged 12 cylinder air-cooled engine could reputedly accelerate from 0-100km/h in 1.9 seconds, 0-160km/h in 3.9 seconds and 0-320km/h in 10.9 seconds, on to a top speed of 400km/h. The 1973 CanAm winner and the 917/30?s most famous driver, Mark Donohue, established a closed-circuit record that still stands today, lapping the Talladega oval in Alabama in August 1975 at a speed of 355.85km/h. The 917/30 coming to Phillip Island from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart is chassis number 917 30 002 ? the car in which Donohue dominated Can Am racing and set the...

Hopkins To Miss Testing At Phillip Island After Crash
2008-02-01 00:25:00 Any hope John Hopkins may have had of getting his 2008 season off to a better start than in 2007 were dashed today, after Hopper crashed in damp conditions during the second day of testing in Phillip Island. The American Kawasaki rider suffered a torn abductor muscle in his groin, after a highside at turn one flicked him off the bike. The only consolation for Hopper is that the injury, while painful, is less serious than the broken hand he suffered testing at Qatar prior to the 2007 season. Hopkins was scheduled to fly back to California as soon as possible, to receive treatment from the renowned sports physiologist Dr Ting. Hopkins will hope to return to testing at the official IRTA test at Jerez in mid-February.

Pedrosa Out Of Sepang Test, Likely To Miss Phillip Island
2008-01-22 16:02:00 Dani Pedrosa's ill fortune at Sepang continues. His fiery crash at the end of testing on Tuesday resulted in a fractured hand, and is on his way home. As expected, the Repsol Honda rider will miss the remainder of the test in Malaysia, but the situation is looking bleak, as Pedrosa is also highly likely to miss out on the Phillip Island test next week, with the next test at Sepang in the first week of February also looking doubtful. Sepang has been cruel to Pedrosa over the years, as he injured himself badly there in a practice crash during his rookie season. The excruciating pain from the gaping hole in his leg did not prevent the tough little Spaniard from finishing on the podium, however.

Phillip Island Faces "Upgrading" For Formula 1, But Ruin For Motorcycle Rac
2007-11-09 23:31:00 Reports emerged from Australia yesterday that the Phillip Island circuit has become a possible future venue for the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix. The option was mooted by Andrew Fox, managing director of the Linfox Property Group, the circuit's owners. Linfox are already planning an 18 hole golf course and a 5 star hotel at the facility, and are trying to lure Australian Formula One Grand Prix to the circuit, which is currently run on a street circuit around Albert Park in Melbourne. Fox suggested the move in an interview with a chain of Australian newspapers, after complaints in Victoria, the Australian state of which Melbourne is the capital, that the current street course in Albert Park cost local taxpayers some AUS $35,000,000 to stage. He told News Ltd that all it would take is for Ron Walker, chairman of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, to pick up the phone and make the call. If a 10 year deal could be reached, then Fox could see no problem making the investment re...

In recent weeks, the future of F1 at Albert Park, its home for many years, has been cast into doubt as it is making the government little money anymore. Since then various circuits have announced their interest, Phillip Island is the ...
2007 Phillip Island MotoGP Race Report - The Gathering Storm
2007-10-15 04:01:00 As objects to look at, motorcycle racing tires are neither particularly impressive nor very interesting. They're round, black, shiny when new, matte when used. Some are wider than others, some are larger than others, some have a taller profile, some have a rounder profile. Some tires are covered in a system of grooves, to channel surface water away from the body of the tire, and allow it to grip, others are smooth as an eight ball. The only splashes of color on tires come from the manufacturer's
