Facial cut and all, Coburn could play for Philly
2008-05-15 15:46:00
Defenseman Braydon Coburn practiced yesterday and may play Thursday as the Philadelphia Flyers face playoff elimination by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Coburn missed Tuesday's Game 3 because his left eye was still shut after being struck by a puck Sunday in Game 2. The eye was partially opened Wednesday, and he wore a face shield. "We'll see how it feels [today]," Coburn said. "I had a good workout. I feel a little bit tired, having been off a few days."Coburn said the eye reopened late Tuesday after he iced it. "This morning, it opened a little more," Coburn said. He said his vision was not preventing him from performing on the ice.

Hard Truths About Philly
2008-05-12 04:00:00
The tragic death of Philadelphia police Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski is being used for shameless pandering by politicians and pundits in Philly. Mayor Michael Nutter and Governor Ed Rendell have used Sgt. Liczbinski's murder to call for more gun control. Specifically, they're calling for a ban on semi-automatic rifles like the one the career criminal used against the veteran of the police force. Columnists like Jill Porter use a senseless killing to chide gun owners for failing to support gun-control...(read more)

Philly Cop Beating Caught on Tape
2008-05-07 22:20:00
A video showing at least 15 Philadelphia police officers viciously kicking, punching and beating three Black men has residents in an uproar. In the video, featured below, officers are caught hitting the suspects with blackjacks after pulling them from their car late Monday. The three men were under suspicion for a murder Sunday night involving 20-year-old man. Tensions had already been high in Philly following the fatal shooting of Police Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski on Saturday, the third city officer slain on duty in two years. One man was fatally shot by police after the shooting, another was arrested Sunday and a third remains at large. John J. McNesby of the Fraternal Order of Police urged that “There’s always two sides to every video.”  Some of the officers seen in the video have been snatched off the street, while others still need to be identified, Doug Oliver, a spokesman for Mayor Michael Nutter, told The Associated Press. Oliver said that, while the use ...

Philadelphia Phillies slugger Pat Burrell, who loves playing in Philadelphia and would like to re-sign there, shot down the money-as-motivation angle."The motivation is the playoffs," he said. "We got a taste of it last year, and we know we're close. I don't worry about that other stuff."GM Rueben Amaro said it was too early to say whether the team would look to re-sign Burrell, who is third in the National League with nine homers.Burrell admits to having one personal motivation: making his first all-star team.
Philly Policeman Killed By Bank Robbers Wearing Muslim Garb

The police officer that was gunned down in Philadelphia over the weekend after responding to a bank robbery in progress, was killed by men wearing full Muslim garb in an effort to hide their identity. Philly Cop Killed: Time to Ban the Burqa
2008-05-04 17:55:00
Suppose we lived in a world where there was a religion that required the faithful to carry an AK-47 in public similar to the Sikh wearing of daggers (known as kirpans); would we bend over backwards to accommodate that religion even at the peril of our lives? It happens with Islam. The weapon: a mask to thwart identification and evade capture. In Islam the masks are called niqab and burqa. Yesterday, the Gateway Pundit told us that Burka-Clad Bank Robbers Killed a Policeman in Philadelphia. We so cower before Muslim intimidation that we allow women, or it could be men, to cover themselves from head to toe in disguise. Muslim apologists will argue that allowing someone to wear a Burqa is not the same as allowing them to carry an AK-47. Actually it is, since one would have no problem entering a bank with an AK-47 hidden under that garment. One of the disadvantages from openly carrying a weapon into a bank is that one can be spotted from the outside and the police can be alerte...

76ers vs. Pistons Playoff Series: Philly Punches Back in Game 3
2008-04-26 05:23:00
Where do you start when your team comes off a disappointing playoff loss and plays the best game you could have asked for? I am beyond proud of our Philadelphia 76ers after tonight's performance. The Sixers came out right from the tap and jumped all over the Detroit Pistons. They completely dominated every aspect of the game for 48 minutes. The result: a 95-75 dismantling of the Detroit Pistons. Game Notes This game was unlike either of the first two in that the Sixers finally maintained their great start. They opened up on a 6-0 run with 5 offensive rebounds in the first six minutes and never really looked back. A few things really stood out to me:

Zipcar-driving voters in Philly choose Obama
2008-04-23 03:26:00
Not quite sure what to make of this, but on a day when America's political eye is turned to Pennsylvania, Zipcar would like us all to know that the car-sharing company took a weeklong poll of Zipcar members in Philadelphia and found that Barack Obama was the runaway winner with 59 percent of the "vote." Hillary Clinton came in second with 25 percent and John McCain trailed with 16 percent. Of course, the "votes" were not simple "who do you like best?" questions but instead were taken from registrations of three vehicles: Honda Hillary, Mini Cooper McCain or BMW Barack. The number of hours each of these vehicles was reserved during the week counted towards the final score. Scientific? No. Accurate? No. Fun? Sure, why not. 76ers vs. Pistons Playoff Series: Philly Steals Game 1
2008-04-21 04:19:00
Who would have thought after being down 15-points on the road, playing against a championship-caliber team, getting 4-16 shooting by our best player and having a roster filled with playoff newbies, the 76ers would be up 1-0 in their first round playoff series against the Detroit Pistons? Well, surprise, surprise, that's the unsettling reality everyone in Detroit must face, most importantly Flip Saunders and his "experienced" Piston players. In the first quarter the Sixers came out with tons of energy and attacked. After that initial burst it became clear Detroit was the more experienced team. They executed well on offense and looked under control at all times. What was also clear was that the Sixers had no plans of backing down. The Good
Wagner still amazed by Philly fans and their lack of class
2008-04-20 15:13:00
Billy Wagner endured the behavior of Philadelphia Phillies fans for two seasons as their closer. He once even lobbied successfully to get the home bullpen moved farther away from their taunts. So Wagner wasn't surprised that they cheered when Jose Reyes was dazed and down during after a second-base collision with Chase Utley on Friday. Wagner was dismayed by what he heard. "It's really sad when humanity comes to the point where somebody getting hurt, it's fun to watch," Wagner said. "It's sad when that happens. Nobody wants anybody to get hurt. I don't want Jimmy Rollins getting hurt. I don't want Pat Burrell to get hurt. I don't want none of these guys. I want to compete against these guys because they're the best, and you want to beat the best. You don't want excuses. When you see Reyes laying there — it's a tough shot, a clean play — and the fans cheering that he's hurt, that just goes and shows you volumes about where our society is headed."

It was a no-go for Carlos Beltran Thursday night, as the New York Mets All-Star center fielder wasn't in the lineup thanks to a stiff neck. But that didn't keep him from pinch-hitting in the ninth inning of last night's 14-inning, 3-2 over the Nationals. Beltran believes he'll be able to play Friday night when the Mets visit Philadelphia for a key three-game series. "I think so," he said before last night's game.

Reds Send Volquez To Face Philly at 1:15 PM ET
2008-04-06 13:24:00
The Reds organization is giddy right now thanks to the dominant, jaw-dropping performance of Johnny Cueto earlier this week. Today at 1:15, another young pitcher has a chance to wow the baseball world in his own Red's debut.Strikeout machine Edinson Volquez, a major favorite here at "Greener," has a much harder line-up to foil than Cueto did in his debut. Cueto K'd 10 D-backs, while only giving up 1 run on 1 hit. Volquez has arguably the best line-up in baseball in front of him in the Philadelphia Phillies. I don't know if Volquez can make a perfect game bid like Cueto did, but I am very excited to watch him try.I can only imagine the bliss in Cincinnati if Volquez is even half as good as Cueto. Besides if you don't know, Volquez was brought over from Texas in the Josh Hamilton trade. It would be a great win for the club if they can get equal or better value than the Rangers outfielder.Brett Myers counters on the mound for Philly with Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Pat Burrell and re...

Eaton locks up No.5 spot in Philly rotation
2008-03-22 14:26:00
It looks as if Adam Eaton has locked up a spot in the Philadelphia Phillies' rotation according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Nobody would say exactly those words yesterday, but nobody really needed to. Eaton, whose $24.5 million contract made him the clear front-runner for the No. 5 job entering camp last month, allowed four hits and one run in 5¹⁄³ innings in a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins Friday at Hammond Stadium.Eaton has pitched well in his last two Grapefruit League starts. Combine his recent performances, his sizeable contract and the fact that none of his competition — Chad Durbin, J.D. Durbin and Travis Blackley — seized the opportunity to take the job from him, and it appears it would take an injury or something drastic for Eaton not to open the season in a rotation behind Brett Myers, Cole Hamels, Jamie Moyer and Kyle Kendrick.
