Philly Kuduro
2009-09-21 10:02:00
Another certified banger that came through our blog inbox recently was this lead single off Zakees's upcoming EP titled Ku Ku Bass/The Rise of Anburley. The guy makes tough african club music but with his Philadelphian upbringing strongly audible, sounding like Dj Sega mixed with Dj Znobia. Your probably better off just following the link rather than having me give you anymore simplistic comparisons. Just know thats it's hot and there is plenty more to be expected over Coming months. Zakee's EP is out later this year through Green Owl Records.Zakee Kuduro - Sane Eba. (ysi)

Even though I was born and raised in the Washington, DC area, my whole family is from Philadelphia, and thus I grew up in a house considers that city to be the #1 city in the nation. And you know, from a culinary aspect, they might not be far off. Cannolis are an interesting dish, in that they show you what your arteries are about to look like before you eat them… I have wandered the back roads of south Philly many times wearing my tattered old Philadelphia Eagles ski cap that is older than I’m going to all the great small-but-famous eateries that my father indoctrinated into my soul from a very young age. Places like Termini Brothers for cannolis or Marra’s for a brick-oven pizza that will knock your socks off. But before you think the food of Philly is all greasy-spoon hoagies and the like, rest assured that the upper scale dining in Philadelphia is top notch as well. Lacroix at The Rittenhouse, Vetri Ristorante and Morimoto Restaurant are all nationally ...

Extra! Extra! Philly Papers' Epic "Phail" Over Tierney "Comp" Caper!
2009-02-25 04:36:00
That?s gotta be the ?wood? baby (and no, that isn?t a personal comment...and I also posted here).Seriously, though, it gives me no joy whatsoever to read that Philadelphia Newspapers has filed for bankruptcy, though given our economy and the particularly sad state of the media business as a whole (with some exceptions), as well as the precarious financing of the company, it comes as no surprise. However, it is more than a little galling to know the following about CEO Brian Tierney (here)??an affidavit by Richard R. Thayer, executive vice president, finance, said?Tierney "without an increase in compensation" became publisher of both papers in the fall of 2006 after the $565,000-a-year incumbent resigned. Even though Tierney in January 2008 demanded a 10% cost concession from workers, his own pay was bumped up 3% in May 2008 to $618,000. Then came the big boost around Christmas (to $858K).Ho, ho, ho, those sound like Bill Marrazzo numbers, boys and girls (oh all right, Tierney says he...

As dmac notes here, if it?s Friday, that means it?s time for more Christine Flowers propaganda (but, as always, IOKIYAR), and Rick Santorum told us yesterday that passage of the Employee Free Choice Act would mean that union members could visit the home of a non-union worker up to four times to try to lean on them so they would join a union, a la Don Corleone, as Little Ricky put it (I?d reference the exact quote, but the column has been taken down for some mysterious reason; maybe Snarlin? What happens to everyone after high school? You know, the people you see every day during the school year but then suddenly lose contact with when graduation is over. The people you only ever see in old photos ... "Hey, whatever happened to that guy?" You know what I'm talking about. Well, I've recently gotten back in contact with several old school pals at Facebook. No more wondering what everyone is doing! Good, bad and everything in-between, it's just plain good to be able to talk to them again. This is another reason to find old friends - recipes. I've known Steve since grade school. He was a goofball then, and although he's mellowed a bit (haven't we all?) his sense of humor is still very much intact. He's lived one incredible life, too. I mean, he probably could write a book. Giants hang on for win in Philly

Giants hang on for win in Philly By Dr. Bill Chachkes-Managing Partner Football Reporters Online There is no doubt in my mind that the New York Giants left everything they had on Lincoln Financial Field tonight. Could it have gone any better for Coach Tom Coughlin and the Big Blue? It could have, but they will take the 36-31 win on the road to raise their record tom 8-1. Just as the Giants fought hard tonight, so did the Eagles. After Eli Manning threw an early interception, Desean Jackson scored the opening points of the game on a direct snap and 11 yard rush to the pylon. However, New York scored the next 17 points to carry a 10 point lead into the second quarter. Most of the first half was a pitched battle between the two teams defenses. After Philly scored off another Giants turnover (a fumble by Brandon Jacobs), New York got another score to end the first half on the second of John Carney?s 3 Field Goals, bringing the half to a close at 20-17. Both teams got tougher ...

Playoff Reflections: Philly Goes to the World Series...
2008-10-16 17:52:00
It looks like FOX will not be getting its dream World Series match-up of the Dodgers and Red Sox, since the Phillies took the National League pennant last night. Now, the Rays just have to won tonight.Cole Hamels dominated as Philadelphia found itself playing for a championship as they downed the Dodgers last night, 5-1. They used offense -- and a whole lot of Dodger miscues -- including three errors from Rafael Furbcal (in one inning) to earn an easy victory.Chad Billingsley was awful, and Greg Maddux sadly may be ever so-close to retirement after his painful outing. So, the first time since '93, they find themselves playing for only their second World Series victory (they only have one in their existence - 1980). For the Dodgers, it was a fun a little run they put together and they made the NLCS exciting; however, one man -- Manny -- does not make a team, and perhaps if everyone else had done their jobs, they would still be playing. Finally, I just really, really, liked this photo...
A Cautionary Lesson For Philly Absentee Voters
2008-10-15 21:10:00
A family member living in the 19111 area code of Philadelphia applied for an absentee ballot from the registration office at 520 Delaware Avenue, and it was delivered to her location not long ago. The self-addressed return envelope to the Philadelphia Elections Office at 142 City Hall that accompanied the ballot showed that no postage was required, so the ballot was completed and mailed back without it. However, the envelope with the ballot was returned to her home address a few days after it was mailed.A call to the Elections Office at 142 City Hall resulted in the discovery that postage is indeed required for the self-addressed return envelopes, even though they indicate that no postage is required if the envelope is mailed within the U.S.So, if you live in Philadelphia and are mailing an absentee ballot to the elections office in City Hall, postage must be included even though the return envelope indicates otherwise. Hopefully, spreading this knowledge will result in fewer mixups...

Last night, I spent much of it flipping between the games along watching the political news on TV.Well, the baseball on the air has been somewhat compelling so far, and it is fascinating to see what has come about so far.The first game, which featured the Philadelphia Phillies versus the Los Angeles Dodgers just two hours up I-95 showed why October is so unpredictable. The Phillies won the game, 8-5, thanks to the golden arm (ok, no so much) of Brett Myers and also his ? um, bat ? as he went 3 for 3 with three RBI?s and went five innings for the win.Shane Victorino, also had a huge night with two hits, four RBI, and a huge game saving catch in centerfield in the eighth inning robbing Casey Blake of a sure double, if not a triple.Chad Billingsley, who I thought would win, only went a little more than two innings in the loss and surrendered eight runs ? all but one earned. The one-man team of Manny Ramirez hit a 3-run homer in top of the fourth; however, the rest of the Dodger offens...

(I?m going to try and tackle two conservative pundits here for the price of one.)In today?s Philadelphia Inquirer, Jonathan Last tries to tell us here that the presidential race is tightening because both sides have ?ditched their playbooks??To understand the change in strategy, let's first go back to the Democratic convention in Denver. There was much concern at the start of the convention over whether Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton would endorse Obama.Of course she would. But Clinton did so by the smallest degree politically permissible. She touted the importance of putting a Democrat in the White House and urged her supporters to work for Obama. What she didn't do was issue a single word of specific praise about Obama.Really? That?s news to me. Defenseman Braydon Coburn practiced yesterday and may play Thursday as the Philadelphia Flyers face playoff elimination by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Coburn missed Tuesday's Game 3 because his left eye was still shut after being struck by a puck Sunday in Game 2. The eye was partially opened Wednesday, and he wore a face shield. "We'll see how it feels [today]," Coburn said. "I had a good workout. I feel a little bit tired, having been off a few days."Coburn said the eye reopened late Tuesday after he iced it. "This morning, it opened a little more," Coburn said. He said his vision was not preventing him from performing on the ice.

The tragic death of Philadelphia police Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski is being used for shameless pandering by politicians and pundits in Philly. Mayor Michael Nutter and Governor Ed Rendell have used Sgt. Liczbinski's murder to call for more gun control. Specifically, they're calling for a ban on semi-automatic rifles like the one the career criminal used against the veteran of the police force. Philly Cop Beating Caught on Tape
2008-05-07 22:20:00
A video showing at least 15 Philadelphia police officers viciously kicking, punching and beating three Black men has residents in an uproar. In the video, featured below, officers are caught hitting the suspects with blackjacks after pulling them from their car late Monday. The three men were under suspicion for a murder Sunday night involving 20-year-old man. Tensions had already been high in Philly following the fatal shooting of Police Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski on Saturday, the third city officer slain on duty in two years. One man was fatally shot by police after the shooting, another was arrested Sunday and a third remains at large. John J. McNesby of the Fraternal Order of Police urged that “There’s always two sides to every video.”  Some of the officers seen in the video have been snatched off the street, while others still need to be identified, Doug Oliver, a spokesman for Mayor Michael Nutter, told The Associated Press. Philly Cop Killed: Time to Ban the Burqa
2008-05-04 17:55:00
Suppose we lived in a world where there was a religion that required the faithful to carry an AK-47 in public similar to the Sikh wearing of daggers (known as kirpans); would we bend over backwards to accommodate that religion even at the peril of our lives? It happens with Islam. The weapon: a mask to thwart identification and evade capture. In Islam the masks are called niqab and burqa. Yesterday, the Gateway Pundit told us that Burka-Clad Bank Robbers Killed a Policeman in Philadelphia. We so cower before Muslim intimidation that we allow women, or it could be men, to cover themselves from head to toe in disguise. Muslim apologists will argue that allowing someone to wear a Burqa is not the same as allowing them to carry an AK-47. Actually it is, since one would have no problem entering a bank with an AK-47 hidden under that garment. One of the disadvantages from openly carrying a weapon into a bank is that one can be spotted from the outside and the police can be alerte...

76ers vs. Pistons Playoff Series: Philly Punches Back in Game 3
2008-04-26 05:23:00
Where do you start when your team comes off a disappointing playoff loss and plays the best game you could have asked for? I am beyond proud of our Philadelphia 76ers after tonight's performance. The Sixers came out right from the tap and jumped all over the Detroit Pistons. They completely dominated every aspect of the game for 48 minutes. The result: a 95-75 dismantling of the Detroit Pistons. Game Notes This game was unlike either of the first two in that the Sixers finally maintained their great start. They opened up on a 6-0 run with 5 offensive rebounds in the first six minutes and never really looked back. A few things really stood out to me:

Zipcar-driving voters in Philly choose Obama

Hillary Clinton came in second with 25 percent and John McCain trailed with 16 percent.
