He was a philosopher of the blues.
2008-07-04 02:55:00 I'm TELLING YOU, MAN, the wold is a place.""Say, the world is a place, huh.""That's just what I'm saying."We were walking back to the car after dinner in Hyde Park, and Johnnie was in an expansive mood. He often got like this, expecially after a good meal and wine. The first time I met him, when he was still working with a downtown civic group, he had started explaining the relationship between jazz and Eastern religion, then swerved into an analysis of black women's behinds, before coming to a stop on the subject of federal Reserve Bank policy. In such moments his eyes would grow wide; his voice would speed up; his round, bearded face would glow with a childlike wonder. That was part of the reason I'd hired Johnnie, I suppose, that curiosity of his, his appreciation of the absurd. He was a philosopher of the blues.Chapter thirteen, Dreams from My Father - Barack Obama

Did we detect some frustration as he wishes for a reality that will never be? We hope that our main man Lowdown knows that there is a price which mankind and mankind ...

The Jewish Philosopher Profoundly Misunderstands Atheists

Philosopher Dissects Whaling
2008-01-21 04:38:00 Thirty years ago, Australian philosopher Peter Singer argued that whaling should stop in Australia because it was cruel. His submission to Australia's Inquiry into Whales and Whaling carried weight. The judicial commissioner, Sir Sydney Frost, agreed with Singer.Australians harpooned their last whale, a sperm whale, on November 20, 1978.Singer says: "Whales cannot be humanely killed ? they are too large, and even with an explosive harpoon, it is difficult to hit the whale in the right spot. Moreover, whalers do not want to use a large amount of explosive, because that would blow the whale to pieces, while the whole point is to recover valuable oil or flesh. So harpooned whales typically die slowly and painfully."Peter Singer, now a professor of bioethics at Princeton University, hasn't changed his views on cruelty but believes Western nations put themselves in a weak position when arguing against Japan's whaling because they themselves inflict unnecessary suffering on animals.Rea...

Jonah and Philosopher,Sarcophagus from S. Maria Antiqua, Rome,3rd century A.D. In Spe Salvi, to illustrate his points, Pope Benedict XVI used the examples of the sculptures of philsophers and sculptures on Roman age Christian sarcophaghi:It is not the elemental spirits of the universe, the laws of matter, which ultimately govern the world and mankind, but a personal God who governs the stars, that is, the universe; it is not the laws of matter and of evolution that have the final say, but reason, will, love?a Person. And if we know this Person and he knows us, then truly the inexorable power of material elements no longer has the last word; we are not slaves of the universe and of its laws, we are free. In ancient times, honest enquiring minds were aware of this.Heaven is not empty. Life is not a simple product of laws and the randomness of ...
Philosopher Comments on Theme of New Encyclical
2007-12-04 20:35:00 Monsignor Robert Sokolowski, a philosophy professor at Catholic University of America, explained in Zenit about the theological virtue of hope, the theme of the Pope`s recent Encyclical.""St. Thomas Aquinas," said the priest, "has some wonderful remarks about hope. He points out that it deals with goods that have two features: They are possible to attain, but they are difficult."Monsignor Sokolowski continued: "If something is impossible to attain, we do not hope for it. We might wish we could reach it, but our wishing is forlorn and resigned; we know we cannot attain that particular good."On the other hand, if the thing in question is possible and easy to attain, again we do not hope for it; we just go ahead and do it or obtain it. I do not hope that I will have lunch today; unless I am in some very desperate situation, I just have lunch."Informed by faith"Now, the theological virtue of hope is directed to our salvation and the beatific vision, to our life with God," explained Mons...

2007-12-01 21:37:00 In his discussion of West’s recent talk in Minnesota, PZ notes: I am extremely impressed with the fact that the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior at the University of Minnesota has a historian and philosopher of science on their faculty — more biology departments ought to make those kinds of strategic alliances to broaden and deepen their discipline. I wholeheartedly agree. Here at Arizona State, the School of Life Sciences is the home for not only the Center for Biology & Society, but also the History and Philosophy of Science Program. We also have recently started a graduate program in Human and Social Dimensions in Science & Technology. Central to all of this has been getting scientists talking to - and collaborating with - historians and philosophers. It’s all very exciting. Friedrich Nietzsche: Possessed Mannequin or Distinguished Philosopher?
2007-11-04 08:44:00 Few writers have inspired such fanatical devotion as has German scholar and phrenologist, Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche. But who was Nietzsche? The brilliant academic conversant in epistemology? Or the sagacious skull-measurer who built an empire trading exotic monkey pelts? A survey of the scrawl he left behind provides clues to the identity of the mysterious litterateur.1872 – 6A youthful and exuberant Nietzsche burst onto the European intellectual landscape with the publication of his dissertation “Tragedy, Destruction, and other Virtues.” Its style—simple, direct, and insipid, was designed to antagonize an indifferent public. Here is the origin of philosophy as we know it, with its fundamental assertion that “semen has no conscience other than an occasional guilt trip disguised as logical schematism.” (Tragedy, 214) It was only the beginning. While the western world mulled over the peculiar decrees in his dissertation, Nietzsche quietly completed “Meditations I’ve t...
Harry Potter is a Left-winger, says French philosopher
2007-10-27 14:12:00 Author J. K. Rowling has infused boy wizard Harry Potter in her novels with the Leftist ideology, says a French philosopher.Jean-Claude Milner, a professor of linguistics at Paris University, believes that the famous ?Harry Potter? book-franchise is a reaction to the free-market revolution instigated in Britain by Margaret Thatcher's governments."It must be said from the start that Harry Potter is deeply political and that the books speak of today's England," the Telegraph quoted him as telling the Liberation newspaper."Reading it, one can see that J.K. Rowling -- like many cultured English people -- believes there was a real Thatcherite revolution, that it was a disaster, and that culture's only chance is to survive as an occult science," he added.Milner made these remarks on the same day when ?Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?, the seventh and final installment of the series, was released in France. He thinks that the boy wizard?s world of magic, especially the Hogwarts scho...

Helpful relationship advice from a dead, cynical existentialist philosopher
2007-10-27 06:39:00 Dear Schopenhauer's Ghost,I'm having a problem with my social life. Every time I find a boy I like, I get bored. Then I have to be mean to make him go away. The problem is, when he does go away, I get sad and lonely. The cycle repeats itself over and over again. What should I do? NoelDear Noel,Your problem is not unusual. Life is a pendulum that swings between frustration and boredom. You must realize that life is very bad and was accidentally created by an omniscient demon intent upon tormenting us. Try listening to Wagner. It will help you forget you are alive.Sincerely,Schopenhauer's- GhostDear Schopenhauer's Ghost,You're an existential do-do head. I don't care if there is any truth to any thing you ever wrote or said. It makes me sad and therefore can't be true. I prefer Ayn Rand any time of day! So there, you scumbag!RachelDear Rachel,I do not listen to critics. Anyone who differs from my point of view is dumb. Even now, while I serve Satan in hell's dark catacombs, I am...

Socrates: The Immortal Philosopher
2007-10-08 16:35:00 I have to admit I struggled through my first year of philosophy. I found Descartes dreary and logic perfectly illogical. I was rather pleased when I could drop (Western) philosophy for Politics and Economics. I appreciate very few Western philosophers, but, I do have great admiration for Socrates. Socrates was unlike many philosophers because for him the aim of philosophy was not to write down great works of intellectual magnificence. Socrates was primarily interested in searching for and living the real meaning of life. I wrote an article at Pick the Brian about Socrates and the lessons we can learn from his life. Some Quotes from Socrates The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing. ~ Be slow to fall into friendship; but when thou art in, continue firm and constant. ~ By all means, marry. If you get a good wife, you'll become happy; if you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher. ~ I decided that it was not wisdom that enabled poets to write their poetry, but a k...

How to be a (Fake) Philosopher
2007-10-04 01:19:00 In today's highly competitive world, you need all the tools to get ahead. Appearing to be spiritual will help you tremendously, and so I'm going to teach you how to be a fake philosopher today. The official definition of philosophy is "Stuff that no one really understands". It is similar to Jargoneese, but different at the same levels in that Jargoneese and Philosophy have similar differences. Jargoneese is using symbolism to re-interpret vagaries of daily life, while philosophy is using vagaries of daily life to re-interpret symbolism. Got it? Good. Continue reading...The following are some tips that will help you sound like a philosopher:Tip #1: Use simple words, but complex constructs. It is a common misconception that Philosophers use big words. You'll get the best effect if you use simple words, but construct sentences that are difficult to understand. The central idea is to awe the victim. Your victim should feel stupid that he can't understand what you're saying despite yo...

The Job of Philosophers

Philosopher vs. Fundamentalist

The Philosopher vs. the Biblical Fundamentalist (Round Two)
2007-05-27 11:28:00 John F. Hobbins, from over at Ancient Hebrew Poetry, has written a response to my post, The Philosopher vs. the Biblical Fundamentalist. In my initial response to Hobbins I claimed that although (or perhaps because) he is a Methodist minister, his position is not a Biblical Fundamentalist one. I believe the reasons for my original assertion will become clear by the end of this post. More significantly, I will argue that even taken on its own terms, Hobbins' position has troubling implications, not only for Biblical Fundamentalism, but for any authoritative view of Christian scripture. Before delving into my reply to Hobbins, I want to quickly address Matt Nehls' reply to my anti-Fundamentalist argument. Both Hobbins and Nehls agree that the locution, “the Son of Man coming in the clouds”, actually refers to Israel’s apocalyptic victory over its enemies. Nehls posits that this interpretation hinges on the following claims:First, this passage is Matthew's redactional work...

The Philosopher vs. the Biblical Fundamentalist
2007-05-07 14:04:00 I realise that this post is a radical departure from the usual content of this blog, but I thought it would be fun to mix things up a little. Here, I will be presenting an argument against certain types of Biblical Fundamentalism—namely, those which hold to a literal interpretation of the Bible. The argument presented here was originally featured on one of my weblogs as a parody. But after receiving several email correspondences from Biblical Fundamentalists attempting to refute my argument (quite unsuccessfully in my opinion), I am beginning to suspect that I may actually be on to something. My argument, simply stated, is that if Biblical literalism is true (a claim many Biblical Fundamentalist subscribe to) then Biblical Fundamentalism must be false.Let us define Biblical literalism as the claim that the Bible should be interpreted at face value, unless otherwise clearly indicated. On this view, the creation of the world by God, the parting of the red sea by Moses, the resur...
