2008-05-31 10:36:00
Welcome to the 70th edition of the Philosophers' Carnival, a fortnightly round-up of quality philosophical posts from the blogs of the world. It seems to have been a busy two weeks, so hopefully there's something here for everyone; apologies to those who didn't make it in.

I just discovered Garfield Minus Garfield, a blog whose simple idea is to remove Garfield, and the things he says, from Garfield comic strips, leaving his owner, John Arbuckle, seeming to mutter disjointedly to himself. There's a rich existential seam running through much of it, but this recent one is straight out of Heidegger..

Where Meaning Is
2008-04-08 08:54:00
We just learned, via the blog of the Berlin-based research institute Phlox, about an odd example due to logical positivist Moritz Schlick illustrating where meaning resides in a language. To paraphrase, take a chair and define 26 different positions it can occupy in a room, including orientations (so which way it's facing and which way up it is are significant). Assign each of these a latter of the alphabet...

Philosophers
2008-03-12 05:09:00
We all stop and ponder the meaning of life every once in a while. Then most of us just get back to the process of living it. Those who became famous by pondering the meaning of life (and everything else) had quite a bit going for them, not the least of which is the time to devote to such higher thought. You can spend years and years just slogging away at earning a living, raising kids, and dealing with everyday stuff, then all the sudden something happens to make you stop and say “Life’s too short to waste any more of it!” Right then and there, another philosopher is born. When it happens, you’ll probably build yourself a better life, but don’t count on anyone listening to your insights. xkcd says it well. If you defy the odds and become a famous philosopher, be ready to find yourself the butt of a joke eventually! Oblique Strategies, Stumbleupon and Certain Philosophers
2007-12-07 08:19:00
I just stumbled upon one of the numerous online implementations of Eno and Schmidt’s Oblique Strategies, and realised that there are certain writers whose work I put to use in much the way that some people use those (relatively) famous cards.

Philosophers and Shepherds

Good Shepherd Sarcophagus, from the Catacomb of Praetextatus, Rome,Late AD 4th centuryMarbleLateran museum (later moved to Pio Cristiano Museo). Jonah and Philosopher,Sarcophagus from S. Maria Antiqua, Rome,3rd century A.D. In Spe Salvi, to illustrate his points, Pope Benedict XVI used the examples of the sculptures of philsophers and sculptures on Roman age Christian sarcophaghi:It is not the elemental spirits of the universe, the laws of matter, which ultimately govern the world and mankind, but a personal God who governs the stars, that is, the universe; it is not the laws of matter and of evolution that have the final say, but reason, will, love?a Person. And if we know this Person and he knows us, then truly the inexorable power of material elements no longer has the last word; we are not slaves of the universe and of its laws, we are free. In ancient times, honest enquiring minds were aware of this.Heaven is not empty. Life is not a simple product of laws and the randomness of ...
Scientists, Philosophers and Historians playing nice together [Stranger Fru

In his discussion of West’s recent talk in Minnesota, PZ notes: I am extremely impressed with the fact that the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior at the University of Minnesota has a historian and philosopher of science on their faculty — more biology departments ought to make those kinds of strategic alliances to broaden and deepen their discipline. I wholeheartedly agree. Here at Arizona State, the School of Life Sciences is the home for not only the Center for Biology & Society, but also the History and Philosophy of Science Program. We also have recently started a graduate program in Human and Social Dimensions in Science & Technology. Central to all of this has been getting scientists talking to - and collaborating with - historians and philosophers. It’s all very exciting. What are Philosophers experts at?
2007-11-15 14:32:00
This interesting question was posed by Bryan Chaplin of EconLog at a recent conference on Social Philosophy and Policy: Profs and grad students alike largely seemed to accept the following list of topics where members of their occupation actually have expertise: Accurately describing the views of other philosophers, living and dead. Checking arguments for logical validity/internal consistency. Its worth ...

The Job of Philosophers
2007-07-26 13:52:00
As a reminder to some among our social commentators, the job of philosophers since the time of Socrates/Plato has been to expose the lies of the sophists (spinners in today’s lingo) by asking tough questions — in the pursuit of truth and justice. We do this as carefully and boldly as we can — sometimes ...

The Unemployed Philosophers` Guild
2007-04-29 10:01:00
Believe it or not, hat tip to Zenit for this one.The Unemployed Philosophers` Guild is a site where philosophers sell their wares. Its philosophy ?"Here in the our Ivory Tower we haven?t yet discovered the first principles of Being (though we concur that the world is watery and pace the whole 20th century Anglo-philosophizing, not formalizable!), but we have discovered that people seem to really like the giants of our educations reduced to little finger puppets, mugs and witty jokes. (Alright, we really should leave Hegel alone, but oddly he sells!) The Unemployed Philosophers Guild kills two birds with one stone: We make people laugh and earn enough money to read Spinoza and raise some families."Here are some examples:Walk in the masters footsteps with these newly redesigned Freudian Slippers! Price: $24.95CommandmentsA little book with assorted sticky notes.Price: $6.50They seem to have run out of the Nietzsche Will to Power Energy Chocolate Bar.
