My Little-Boy Phobia
2008-07-27 19:06:00 A couple of days ago I was riding my bike to my mother's when I was attacked. No, nothing serious. I wasn't beaten or anything. Instead, my little-boy phobia has once again proven to be a reasonable concern despite its (by definition) irrational nature. By the way, my little-boy phobia does not refer to my very reasonable fear of being taken for a twelve-year-old boy wherever I go. That I can live with. I'm getting pretty good at it, too. In fact, I'm beginning to use it to my advantage. When I buy myself 5 things of ice-cream, for example, the check-out ladies don't look at me weird, seeing as tons of ice-cream is apparently a perfectly natural thing for a boy to purchase. It's a whole different story when I attempt to buy my actual favorite item at any grocery store--beer. But I digress. The other day I was riding through a park where dozens of people leisurely spent their evenings taking their babies for...

Phobia Treatments - Desensitization
2008-07-10 16:29:00 Phobias are treated in many different ways. Some people favour a Flooding technique where someone is subjected to what they are phobic of until their symptoms subside and they learn, the hard way, that there is no danger and therefore nothing to be afraid of. Another popular treatment is desensitization, either with or without a Cognitive element (where faulty negative thinking is challenged). Of course the alternative healthcare brigade come out in force for phobia treatments, with everything from EFT to Zero Balancing being touted as a instantaneous miracle cure. Desensitization is the most common approach however, so let's examine it in more detail. The theory goes that for some reason (and in desensitization the reason for the initial fear, the cause of the phobia, is not considered at all important or relevant) a fear response has become attached to an object or situation. They theory states that if the subject can be persuaded to confront that situation and accept that the...

The truth about phobia and anxiety treatments
2008-04-14 13:38:00 Hi I am trying to compile a small list of common treatments for anxiety and phobias which actually work. Easy, you might say, just look on Google or in a book shop. Problem is, there is a lot of rubbish out there and it's really hard to tell what's good and what's bad, and more importantly where an anxiety or phobia sufferer might best look for help. There are two provisos that I want to make clear at the start of this post: Firstly, I accept that no one treatment in any field however scientifically backed or esoteric works for everyone. If such a treatment did work for everyone then there would be no need for this list and everyone would be cured! Secondly when I judge what works I want to see real evidence. I don't want to know about conventional wisdom, I don't care if it has been used for centuries, and I don't care hoe many people therapists or treatment inventors claim to have healed! CBT I won't say too much about CBT here because I have talked about it in genera...

Germ-phobia and death rays
2008-03-29 14:20:00 In the scientific world, Nikola Tesla is remembered principally for his work on the rotating magnetic field, which made possible the alternating-current generators that supply most of the world with electricity today. In honour of this achievement a scientific unit was named after him. The 'tesla' does not often crop up in layman's conversation, however, as it is used to calculate the force of a magnetic field. His name is also immortalised in the Tesla coil, a device that allows a transformer to generate high frequency current at a very high voltage. It is still used in televisions, radios and other modern electronic devices. He invented the coil in the course of his work on alternating current in 1891.In later years Tesla was something of a solitary eccentric, often to be seen walking to the New York Public Library from his hotel, where his room had to serve as his laboratory. Although he developed a phobia for germs, it appears he did not suspect the city's pigeons of being c...

Sex, Condom Phobia, Holi & HIV/AIDS
2008-03-21 20:15:00 On a serious note, it is a shame that the HIV & AIDS problem has almost gone in red now. India as country has become a stronghold of the deadly HIV Virus. As per World Health Organizations estimates, India has a very big problem with HIV/AIDS next only to some African countries where the problem is in the red already. In India, the situation can be stated to be almost in the red; 500-1000 out of every 10000 of deaths in India are due to AIDS. And even more alarmingly, due to the lax attitude of people when it comes to awareness regarding responsible sexual behavior, the number of people living with HIV/AIDS is increasing faster than anywhere else in the world. If it were not for the great work of bodies such as WHO and other AIDS mass media, the situation would have been a nightmare already. The main aim now is to spread awareness about responsible sexual behavior and preventive measures such as use of Condoms.Apparently this is where the problem is, the Indian female and males ...
Purchase The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook Here!
2008-03-13 19:58:00 Quick Announcement: I have a new feature to the blog. Now you can purchase the book I am always referring to, "The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook" by Edmund J. Bourne right here from the sidebar of my blog. The picture above won't take you to it but the one on the left hand side of the blog will. Its a little slow to load right now so if you don't see it give it a few more seconds to load. Hopefully Amazon will fix that soon or I will switch to another bookstore provider. I purchased mine online and it was a very easy experience. I hardly ever buy books but this one was worth every penny. The nice thing about it is that it gives you the tools to learn and then the workspace to practice those tools. You really get a feel for who you are and what the real issues you need to work out come from. You can learn about the Anxiety Scale, Positive Affirmations, Exposure to Your Fears, and so much more.Enjoy! If you enjoyed this post Subscribe to The Reality of Anxiety.
Social Phobia - normal human experience or mental illness?
2008-03-04 07:23:00 Social Phobia - which is basically severe and acute shyness - is an incredibly common phenomena. But is there any real point in labelling severe shyness as a mental illness? Does it in fact make it more ingrained in the psyche? Some people would argue that if you give someone a label and a stigmata that says "you have social phobia" it is a bit like telling them they have cancer, no matter how they were feeling before, they suddenly feel a lot worse. Why? Because conditions tend to feel permanent. Emotions are always transitory. Even if you think you always feel depressed, or stressed, actually there are times when you don't and times when those emotions are present only to a slight extent. But conditions feel permanent so it may not be helpful to tell people they "have" something rather than "are feeling" something. On the other hand, if there is no label and no recognisable condition, then people who suffer from acute shyness are repeatedly told t...

The Sponsored Post Phobia - Are You SP-Phobic?
2008-02-27 00:00:00 When Google started to hunt down bloggers selling their page rank to advertisers, a huge number of bloggers turned their backs on paid reviews and all forms of text link ads. Suddenly, links to advertisers now include a ‘nofollow’ attribute. Most bloggers who have been monetizing their blogs from sponsored posts deleted their accounts in all the review sites they’ve joined. Advertisers on the other hand, slowed down with sponsored posts because the Google police force has also decided to go after them. Opportunities available at PPP and SponsoredReviews apparently went down, which affected bloggers using these services to monetize their blogs. Most of the advertisers who decided to stick with sponsored review as their marketing strategy now require their publishers non disclosure of the sponsored review. photo credit: circulating Interestingly, the decision of Google to penalize both publishers and advertisers engaged in the buying and selling of ...

Islamophobia
2008-01-22 16:56:00 The term, which first appeared in the 1980's but didn't enter discourse until after September 11th, describes an irrational fear of Islam. Islamophobia has become a controversial term that, for the left, symbolizes a dangerous overreaction to a minority of Muslims. But for the right, the word Islamophobia undermines a justified skepticism of religious motivations and marginalizes a cultural clash that may define our time.

2008-01-21 18:57:00 Here Obama speaks with conviction and a level of honesty uncommon among politicians. Perhaps this guy is what he says he is: a uniter. Perhaps we shall see. The New York Observer Unfortunately, all too often when we talk about unity in this country, we?ve come to believe that it can be purchased on the cheap. We?ve come to believe that racial reconciliation can come easily ? that it?s just a matter of a few ignorant people trapped in the prejudices of the past, and that if the demagogues and those who exploit our racial divisions will simply go away, then all our problems would be solved. All too often, we seek to ignore the profound institutional barriers that stand in the way of ensuring opportunity for all children, or decent jobs for all people, or health care for those who are sick. We long for unity, but are unwilling to pay the price. But of course, true unity cannot be so easily won. It starts with a change in attitudes ? a broadening of our minds, and a broadening of ou...

Blattodephobia
2008-01-12 14:19:00 I don’t know if I do have such type of phobia. All I know is that I just can’t help myself being so uncomfortable if i see cockroaches near me. Especially if it will start to fly, I will then feel so extremely anxious that it might reach toward my direction. I hate waking up with cockroaches. Grrr!!!! Cockroaches are really dreadful creatures for me. Yes, they are too small for my nonsense fear but I consider them as my mortal enemies. They freak me out beyond belief. Sometimes I try disposing them with my own valiant ways but most of the time I just choose running away as fast I can from it. I’ve heard recently that Terminix can help get rid of this creepy bug. I wonder if it can also help me get over my Blattodephobia

Cure Social Phobia?
2008-01-10 17:07:00 Social Phobia (sometimes called Social Anxiety Disorder) is a nasty label to be given and one which I think is counter productive. It is much better to think of yourself as someone who can be shy, even very shy, rather than someone who has a lifelong condition as an inherent part of them. Social Phobia, like all phobias is eminently treatable...dare I use the word cure? The label given to very shy or nervous people by the medical/psychological status quo might be helpful for their administration and organisation, but is not at all helpful to your condition. So how is it treated? Well, of course there are the drug therapies and the ubiquitous CBT which I talk about elsewhere on this site and in more detail. But what of something new, which as time moves on seems to become ever more likely as a cure or at least a very useful tool in the fight against the feelings that I refuse to label Social Phobia? There has been much talk in the media lately of online worlds where people can meet...

The religious factor in the American Presidential race : Islamophobia
2008-01-04 20:13:00 This is my second post regarding the the religious factor in the American Presidential race ,you can check the first part here and last night Obama and Huckabee had own the Iowa Caucuses and thus they have a better opportunity to present the democratic and republican party in the final elections . This is considered a historical victory for Obama changeling Hilary and Edwards . Anyhow this is not the topic of our post today ,already the race did not finish yet Today I will speak about a very interesting factor playing its role perfectly in this presidential race ,the Islamophobia factor . As you know since the 9/11 Muslims and Arabs became the villains who want to invade and destroy the American civilization , it is a natural thing thanks to the huge media campaign against the Muslims and the Arabs after 9/11 and even pre 9/11 It is also a natural thing in the elections dirty world to use the new fear factor to influence the public whether to win their support or to ma...

List of well known Phobias
2007-11-21 10:47:00 What is a phobia? The difference between a phobia and a sensible fear is the panic that grips a phobic person. A phobia is like a fear gone wild, robbing a person of reason. For example, a respect for the dangers of falling off a cliff reflects a healthy sense of reality; but a panicky preoccupation with heights can prevent a person from working in a tall building or vacationing in the mountains. One of the cruelest aspects of a phobia is that it can dominate a person's thoughts even when the person knows the fear is irrational. How common are these irrational, consuming fears? There are hundreds of phobias and millions of peoples suffer from them around the globe. The American Psychiatric Association separates phobias into three general kinds. The most common kind is agoraphobia, actually a complex group of fears involved with being in public places. Then there are simple phobias and social phobias.Broadly speaking, simple phobias are connected to one thing or to a specific activity....

2007-11-16 18:45:00 Blige talks about her youth:"When I was growing up, my neighborhood was full of everyone—black, white, Latino, gay, straight. A lot of people that I knew were gay, but they were great people. They were good people. It’s not like they were alien. They were just people. That [acceptance] was just something that was always in me. I’ve never been a judgmental person because I have been through so much hell myself."And of homophobia in hip-hop, she adds: "The real hip-hop, the real people don’t even care about that. They’ll love you and accept you no matter what because they know who they are. There are a lot of people trying to figure out who they are and what they’re gonna be. There’s a lot of confusion in that. Confusion causes a lack of identity. Observer and Guardian disagree on homeophobia
2007-11-13 14:32:00 In the Guardian, novelist Jeanette Winterson soberly tackles the tricky subject of homeophobia – the fear and loathing of homeopathy, that is. She relates how while staying at a remote cottage in Cornwall she ran a temperature of 102, had spots on her throat, was delirious. And she had a book to finish. Her “desperate” publisher suggested she call the homeopath Hilary Fairclough who sent round a remedy called Lachesis, made from snake venom. “Four hours later I had no symptoms whatsoever.” (I believe this piece first appeared in The Times in 2004). Jehovah's Witnesses : Their Superstitious Blood Phobia
2007-11-13 05:40:00 Over the years hundreds of Jehovah's Witnesses have died as a result of the Church's ban on blood transfusions. Clearly the belief isn't written in stone as so many members were led to believe. If those in need of transfusions had gone ahead with it and then taken the road of repentance, under this recent ruling they would be reinstated, and quite a few kids out there would have mothers. This strategy on the part of Witness leadership is really about politics and PR. In order to remove some of the stain caused by the bad publicity they have been receiving over the blood ban, they are slipping in the "true repentance" caveat to take off some of the heat. Why don't t...
