Dental Phobias
2008-02-06 20:46:00
Answer is yes, the chances are you have a dental phobia.Phobia is more severe and intense than a fear which happens when the body senses danger and activates the fight or flight responses caused by a surge in adrenalin.Or phobia may occur as a reaction to the dentist, the treatments or in more serious cases, anything dental related (such as toothpaste adverts). And phobias usually occur because they have been learned from someone significant in our lives, or because there has been a significant negative usually directly related to a dentist experience.Has not already been explored, it could prove to be a useful skill in both managing the phobic response and alleviating any pain or difort. No one can really say how hypnosis works; however, research seems to suggest that it is based upon a disassociation model, as seen in patients with MPD.Eliminate pain by placing it in a sort of psychological storage area, away from the consciousness of the patient. Are many accounts in history of hypn...
Phobias: fear of long words
2008-02-06 13:30:00
We've had an email from one of our regulars saying that she recently came across the word 'hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliop-hobia', rather ironically the fear of long words. This seemed like a spoof or a joke to me so I looked into it and the best information I found was on Wikipedia:Hippopotomonstrosesqu-ipedaliophobia — fear of long words. Hippopoto- "big" due to its allusion to the Greek-derived word hippopotamus (though this is derived as hippo- "horse" compounded with potam-os "river", so originally meaning "river horse"; according to the Oxford English, "hippopotamine" has been construed as large since 1847, so this coinage is reasonable); -monstr- is from Latin words meaning "monstrous", -o- is a noun-compounding vowel; -sesquipedali- comes from "sesquipedalian" meaning a long word (literally "a foot and a half long" in Latin), -o- is a noun-compounding vowel, and -phobia means "fear". Note: This was mentioned on the first episode of Brainiac Series Five as one of Tickle's T...

Here are my Top 10 phobias. Call me a wuss if you want, I don't give a damn! At least I'm honest right?!10) Heights "Acrophobia"I reckon this is one of the most common phobias around. Looking down from buildings makes me go weak in the knees!!9) Clowns "Coulrophobia"I don't know what's up with me and clowns. I hate them! Maybe it's because of the movie 'IT'. They freak me out all the time. I punched a clown years ago when he crept up behind me at the old NTUC Happy Days club. With that said, I've never hired a clown for any of my events.8) Balding "Phalacrophobia"I'm a vain pot! I used to worry so much about going bald. I even went to the extend of going to a hair treatment centre. I paid hundreds and not a strand grew back! Bloody idiots!!! They cheated my money! Today, I'm botak and happy as you can see from the picture above.7) Waves & Waves like motion "Cymophobia"I can't swim!!! Funny enough, I got in the water the last 2 times I was drunk in Bali. The first time...
List of well known Phobias
2007-11-21 10:47:00
What is a phobia? The difference between a phobia and a sensible fear is the panic that grips a phobic person. A phobia is like a fear gone wild, robbing a person of reason. For example, a respect for the dangers of falling off a cliff reflects a healthy sense of reality; but a panicky preoccupation with heights can prevent a person from working in a tall building or vacationing in the mountains. One of the cruelest aspects of a phobia is that it can dominate a person's thoughts even when the person knows the fear is irrational. How common are these irrational, consuming fears? There are hundreds of phobias and millions of peoples suffer from them around the globe. The American Psychiatric Association separates phobias into three general kinds. The most common kind is agoraphobia, actually a complex group of fears involved with being in public places. Then there are simple phobias and social phobias.Broadly speaking, simple phobias are connected to one thing or to a specific activity....

Anxiety, Panic and Phobias
2007-11-13 17:55:00
I suffered from Anxiety and Phobias for a long time, and I tried almost everything to get rid of them. Some of what I tried was rubbish, and some of it was actually very useful. People often write and ask me what I think is best, what works, what is painless and above all what is quick. Here, I will try and expand on the things that helped me and give ideas regarding what might help you.        &-#xA0;    Easy Calm System for Anxiety and Panic Results - Click Here! 1. CBT. For lucky people Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is made available to them by their doctor when they first present with symptoms of anxiety or panic attacks which have lead to phobias. CBT is good for anxiety and panic related problems because with CBT you learn how to challenge your negative thoughts. This can relatively quickly and painlessly relieve some of the nastiest parts of the condition: fear of going mad, being convinced that you were about to die, be...

Be Set Free Fast for Anxiety and Phobias
2007-09-09 23:48:00
From time to time people ask me if I can recommend a treatment programme for their anxiety, phobias, depression, panic stress related IBS etc etc. For the most part I recommend them the things which I know from personal experience to be helpful but I always advise them that what works for me does not necessarily work for everyone. I suggest they experiment from prescription medicines under the guidance of a sympathetic and knowledgeable doctor. I suggest they seek therapy and also learn some CBT techniques and do Mindfulness Meditation. I also suggest they start to experiment with some alternative solutions, such as acupuncture or EFT. I always add though, that the alternative healthcare sector is awash with charlatans and shrewd business people, who see those people that suffer from issues that may well include low self-esteem as easy prey. I am particularly suspicious of expensive online courses and of techniques with names that sound like they were dreamt up in marketing departme...

Phobias 'to be cured on the web'
2007-01-04 14:02:01
I came across this on the BBC and I thought I?d share it with you. Basically, it is the idea to make virtual reality software available to phobics over the internet, so they can be exposed to things which cause them anxiety. Certainly flight simulators have been useful for some people with a fear of flying, at least as a precursor to exposure. My only issue with this is that the expert quoted here, Prof, David Alexander, says that to treat a phobia you have to expose yourself to what you fear. I would take some issue with that statement. Yes, you do have to face your fears gradually. But sometimes, when we have several or complex phobias like agoraphobia, what we see as a simple phobia is our own unconscious attempt to protect us from something we dread, so a more analytical approach can be useful to get to the bottom of things. Ultimately, if you suffer from many anxieties and phobias you might find that as you understand yourself and your motivations mo...
