Jerry Reinsdorf trying to buy the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes
2009-07-04 05:07:00 ...and the NHL wants him to buy them too. CHICAGO (Reuters) - The National Hockey League is backing a bid by sports team mogul Jerry Reinsdorf to buy the bankrupt Phoenix Coyotes for up to $148 million rather than the $212.5 million offer from Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie. The NHL believes the owner of the Chicago White Sox baseball and Chicago Bulls basketball teams and part-time Arizona resident will keep the team in the Phoenix area and the league hopes Judge Redfield Baum accepts Reinsdorf's bid, Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in an email. "At the end of the day, what we have and what's been submitted to the court, we think is the best offer that's out there, and...

Phoenix Coyotes won’t be calling Stamkos after all
2008-02-06 22:43:00 Oh, how wrong was I.Turns out Wayne Gretzky won't need to keep Steven Stamkos' phone number handy after all.Contrary to popular opinion - well, mine anyway -Stamkos won't be catching a flight to Phoenix after the NHL draft this summer. With apologies to fans of the Yotes, it almost seemed a foregone conclusion last October that the desert dogs were going to miss the playoffs altogether and were likely the early frontrunners in the Stamkos sweepstakes. At the time, I didn't think that was a bad thing, given the impressive array of young talent they were stockpiling out in Phoenix.Oops. My bad.Turns out the Coyotes are in a dogfight, if you'll pardon the pun, for a playoff spot in the west as the NHL gets set to turn for home.Who knew?Sure as hell not I.Picking up Ilja Bryzgalov is beginning to look like the deal of the year. Shane Doan is strapping the team on his back. Radim Vrbata is enjoying the best season of his career. Ed Jovanovski has gone back in time and Peter Mueller is...

Phoenix Coyotes turn to PGA Tour for marketing
2008-01-29 05:05:00 Interesting news out of Phoenix Monday that the Phoenix Coyotes have inked a one-year marketing gig with PGA Tour regular Jeff Quinney.Guessing Tiger Woods wasn't up to adding a few Benjamins to his inflated bank account or simply doesn't like hockey. I'm guessing the latter.Quinney will wear the Yotes' logo on his shirt during tournament rounds. Hey, it could be worse for the 2000 U.S. Amateur champion. At least it's not the Kings. On a personal level, I think the Coyotes would be better off signing mega-hottie Natalie Gulbis to the contract, but that is from a strictly selfish standpoint. Men don't generally watch women's golf, but Gulbis is a reason to. And you can bet those fans will be, uh, looking at her shirt. Instant marketing. Everyone wins.In all fairness, Quinney is a remarkable talent, making this an innovative marketing ploy from the Yotes. Jeff Quinney spent a couple of years on the Canadian Tour and I had the chance to get to know him well, and the kid - who isn...

2007 Hockey Road Trip Recap Part I
2007-12-05 12:53:00 The second annual hockey road trip was a great success. Well, unless you were a Phoenix Coyote fan or player. More on this in a moment. This will be a long entry which includes my thoughts and observations about the three hockey games I attended as well as notes and thoughts on the road. If you?re a sports fan, there will be plenty here about hockey and the arenas where the games were played. If you?re not a sports fan, there will be plenty here about Minneapolis/St. Paul, Chicago, Detroit and points in between. I should probably start at the beginning. This year?s road trip actually started in the air. I was all prepared to start this post by complaining about AirTran. Although the airline provided the cheapest tickets by far, I was not all that keen on taking a 6:40 AM flight from Dulles to Atlanta with a 3-hour layover before flying to Minneapolis/St. Paul. My return flight featured only 30 minutes between stops, so I figured that I had an excellent chance of missing th...

2007 Hockey Road Trip
2007-11-28 04:29:00 The second annual hockey road trip is back after a very successful adventure in 2006. This year?s trip includes stops in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Chicago and Detroit. I?m leaving on Wednesday morning and will try to post updates from the road if possible. If not, expect a full review when I return. Some initial topics I plan to discuss:- Why am I flying through Atlanta to get from Washington to Minnesota?- Will the rental car really be $45 as quoted or will they try to screw me?- Since I am attending three straight Phoenix Coyote road games, will coach Wayne Gretzky send me a personal invitation to meet the team?- Is the Mall of America worth visiting?- Who will win Dancing With the Stars?

The Phoenix Coyotes Are Sharing Their Music
2007-10-31 07:32:00 When it’s been five years since you last made the playoffs, it takes some outside-the-box thinking to generate fan interest. Fortunately for the Phoenix Coyotes, Wayne Gretzky has an iTunes playlist. The team has launched “Coyotes Trax“—a section of the team’s website where fans can view the iTunes playlists of Greztky, winger Shane Doan, goaltending coach Grant Fuhr, broadcaster Todd Walsh, and the Coyotes dance team. If you’re wondering whether Grant Fuhr has a playlist full of hip-hop, the answer is no. And shame on your for stereotyping one of hockey’s most famous black players. Fuhr’s playlist includes some older tunes from the likes of Bob Dylan, Nirvana, and the Smashing Pumpkins. In case you’re interested, Gretzky’s playlist features a good deal of Nickelback, a couple Nelly Furtado tunes, and a Sarah McLachlan song. Surprisingly, it doesn’t include Nickelback’s 2006 hit, “My Wife is an Insane...
