Basics of Phuket hotels
2009-01-23 10:54:00 I lived in Phuket for about a year and I think I have a good feel for the place. I took the island for what it is and never felt too depressed about the state of development because I had never seen the island before the hotels went up. People often complain about what has ...
My thoughts on Phuket flights
2009-01-23 10:52:00 It didn?t take many weeks of living in Phuket for me to need to make the trip to Bangkok. Whereas before I would have usually taken the bus, with work commitments and a little more money in my pocket, flying seemed like the best option. It wasn?t until I was in Phuket that I discovered ...
Two 1 Bedroom Properties - Kamala , Phuket
2009-01-16 13:08:00 Two 1 Bedroom Properties - Kamala, Phuket This resort is uniquely designed and extremely well built. This property was originally built as a show home for "The Trees" Complex. It stands within these grounds on approximately 600 square meters. As a result, the owner of this property will benefit from access to all of the facilities available within this complex. The property is located in Kamala, on the outskirts of the village. The property is situated approximately 2 kms from the beach front. The property is actually 2 one bed roomed single storey houses plus swimming pool. This is a fantastic opportunity as they are being sold as 1 property. This is a new build property, built in 2007. The properties have a 5 year building warranty. It has registered title deeds with a 90 year lease (3 x 30 years renewable). The houses consist of an open plan kitchen/dining area/lounge...
High Season Weather in Phuket
2008-12-20 15:46:00 Finally a couple of weeks ago we saw the last hurrah of the "rainy season" in Phuket. There are no exact dates on the seasons, and the terms "wet" and "dry" are far too black and white. The low season has plenty of good weather and indeed I do recommend visiting Phuket in the off season - see here : Low Season in Phuket - A Great Time to Visit! - Sure there can be wet days and some bouncy seas and the beach is not always swimmable, but it's nice anyway! Sometime in October or early November the season changes.. which is to say the wind changes, from prevailing southwesterlies to northeasterlies. There can be weeks of unsettled weather before we get to where we are now - perfect weather! This year there was still some rain (mostly in the evening) in late November and into December even, but the last 2 weeks has been almost entirely dry, sunny and blue-skied. I think that smiling moon on December 1st marked the change into real high season weather.A few Phuket photos from the last 2 w...

Wat Mongkhon Nimit (Phuket Town)
2008-12-13 14:33:00 I keep heading back to Phuket Town to explore different areas. I find the town fascinating - you can get a totally different perspective on Phuket by walking around the town. This is where real life goes on. It's completely different to the main tourist beaches. I recommend everyone spend a few hours wandering around the old town, check out some markets, temples, small restaurants, old Chinese shops and maybe you can get a taste of Thailand that is not available on the beach.Today I took my 3 year old son for a walk around, I wanted to visit Wat Mongkhon Nimit (sometimes called Phutta Mongkhon Nimit) and promised the boy to buy him some new shoes in town later. The temple is just on the north edge of the "old town". If you walk up Soi Rommani from Thalang Road, you can see the temple, which is on Dibuk Road.(above) View along Soi Rommani towards Wat Mongkhon NimitTurn left and you reach the entrance to the temple...The main temple was locked today.. guess that means I have to go ba...

Kuay Jap Noodles - A new restaurant in Phuket Town
2008-11-28 15:50:00 Last weekend, after a little drive around Sirey Island to the east of Phuket town - where I finally got to see the reclining Buddha (the other times I have been there the temple had been closed) - we were heading home and I had half a mind to cook some pasta, but we passed a new looking noodle shop which looked interesting. Most noodle shops look the same, rather basic and cheap with plastic chairs and questionable hygiene (don't look too close - a good motto for Thailand!).The Kuay Jap Champ Suphan noodle shop is in the Sam Kong area in the north of Phuket Town, just half a kilometer east of the Tesco Lotus store on the way into town. It has been open about 6 months they told us, somehow we'd not noticed before. Or maybe we were in the mood for Kuay Jap which is a kind of noodle soup made with rolled up thick noodles, crispy pork, "moo daeng" (roast red pork) and (unless you ask them NOT to include it) things like liver, heart, intestines, congealed blood.. aka "offal". If you ar...

Phuket Thai Hua Museum
2008-11-20 16:07:00 I have said it before and will say it again - I like Phuket Town, especially the old part of town which comprises a few blocks around Phang Nga Road, Thalang Road, Krabi Road and Dibuk Road. The narrow roads and turn of the century architecture combined with the old Chinese shops make a welcome break from the busier parts of town, and if you come from the tourist beaches it's like another world. Yes, you are in the real Phuket, which is what this blog tries to show! The Phuket Thai Hua Museum is found on Krabi road, a block North and half a block west of the traffic circle near the market. Krabi road is pretty quiet, most of the buildings are of the "Sino-Portugese" style and life itself seems slightly old fashioned in this part of town. The museum has been open a couple of years, and still has a museum-in-progress feeling. It has been used for art exhibitions too. The building dates back to 1934 when it was established as the Phuket Thai Hua School, a Thai-Chinese language school mo...

Some Videos at Phuket Aquarium
2008-11-02 15:22:00 We do like Phuket Aquarium. I have totally lost count of how many times we have been. I love taking the kids there and watching their reactions to the fish. As a baby they are amazed, then they start to look more closely, then they start to learn names, then they get older and ask questions about the fish. As a diver, most of the species in the aquarium are familiar to me so I am very happy to pass on some knowledge... and you know you can't fool a kid. After our last visit, my 3 year old boy was looking at one of the aquarium brochures I had picked up. There was a picture of a small orange and white fish. He asked me "what's this fish, daddy?". I relied "It's Nemo". He came right back with "No! It's an anemone fish!". Proud dad.So here's a few little video clips of the aquarium. It's well worth a visit I reckon.Bannerfish and Moorish Idols Moray Eels Leopard Shark in the big tank (you can walk through a little tunnel). Big Groupers have their own tank, or they'd eat the...

Phuket Vegetarian Festival Videos
2008-10-14 16:10:00 Here goes - my final throw of the dice for this years vegetarian festival. My camera has a basic video function. Not National Geographic quality, but I hope the little videos below will give some idea of the experience.Face PiercingA few clips of the piercing taking place at Kathu Shrine on 6th October, around 6 - 6:30am. It was going on all over the place, it was hard to know where to look! A look around Kathu Shrine before starting the procession... The Procession Leaving Kathu Shrine...various entranced people Carrying the Gods through Kathu Village... LOTS of firecrackers Ma Song Blessing a House And a couple of vids of Ma Song doing things in Phuket Town.

Vegetarian Festival 2008 Photos in Phuket Town
2008-10-09 15:31:00 So, on Monday after getting up early and seeing the piercing at Kathu Shrine, and heading out of Kathu Village with the procession (see Vegetarian Festival Photos Part 1), I headed into Phuket Town to pick up the procession again in the old town. The narrow streets mean you get very close to the Ma Song, and very close to the firecrackers! I was taking photos on Thalang Road close to my favourite little street in town, Soi Rommani. Allow me to introduce my favourite guy! I had a photo of him last year looking rather ghoulish with 2 big black rods through his cheeks. This year looks like he used even bigger rods! Some aspects of the festival are not for everyone. If you don't like scary things or blood or the idea of ramming 2 large rods through your face, look away now! This next guy is one of the entranced Ma Song who leap around the procession offering blessings to locals who have offering tables outside their houses. Some of these guys really are a bit spooky. The narrow str...

Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2008 Pictures
2008-10-06 15:51:00 Well this year I wanted to see something different during the festival. I admit to being a lazy boy sometimes, but today I was awake before dawn and headed to Kathu Shrine before 6am to watch the start of the procession to Phuket Town, and hopefully see some face piercing close up. Actually, the word "piercing" does not describe what happens. Something like "skewering" or "mutilation" might be better! I am not squeamish, but... hint, if you are squeamish, I suggest heading to a different page on this blog!It was hard to see inside the shrine, but the "Ma Song" were coming out in various stages of trance, and faces were duly threaded with knives, swords, guns, all manner of odd shaped metal pieces. You'd need 20 pairs of eyes to see all that was going on there. I was with a friend, Phil, who is director of the Helicam company in Phuket, so he's a "pro" photographer, but this was new to him too! Thanks for Phil for lending me a Canon G7 camera. Some photos were taken with the G7, so...

Jui Tui Shrine (Phuket Town)
2008-10-05 15:40:00 Yesterday afternoon I took a walk around the streets near Jui Tui Shrine, one of the largest Chinese shrines in Phuket Town. It's just along Ranong Road road from the old market (which has now been demolished and a new building looks like it will be complete sometime soon - great! No more smelly old market!) - easy to find, and certainly worth a look if you are in Phuket Town. Ranong road near the market is busy enough at the best of times. The local buses leave from and arrive at Ranong road. From here you can get a bus to most parts of Phuket island.During the vegetarian festival, much of the road is packed with food stalls and little restaurants selling Jae (vegetarian) food. I parked a couple of blocks away and wandered along Ranong road. Half close your eyes and ignore the mopeds squeezing through the people, and the road has a very old feel...And if you look the other way ... a traffic jam. I mean, these people must know what's going on down here. There are plenty of other r...

The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is Coming!
2008-09-23 16:47:00 (Update 8th October) - photos are online:• Phuket Vegetarian Festival Photos 2008One of my favourite times of year is nearly here! The Phuket Vegetarian Festival starts on September 28th this year. The date is based on the Chinese lunar calendar and varies year to year (last year the festival started on October 11th) - this year is a bit early and I hope the weather holds, as late September/early October has a habit of being rather grotty. This is a spectacular, gruesome, fascinating festival. There is so much to see, some interesting food to sample, a real sense of history and tradition that many people do not realise exists in Phuket (hey, it's not all beaches, you know!). Over the last couple of years I have tried to see as much as possible, and this year plan to take a week off work in order to better experience the full range of festival happenings. Last year I was in Phuket Town twice for the famous processions which take place this year every morning from the 1st to 7th ...

Phuket Airport Closed by Anti-Government Protesters
2008-08-29 14:49:00 I would not normally post breaking news, but things are happening here in Phuket and in Bangkok that need to be mentioned. There will be no dicussion of who is right or wrong. It's not my place to comment. I heard shouts on the TV this evening of "Ock Bai" which basically means "Get Out". Similar shouts were heard nearly 2 years ago.Update Sunday Morning 31st AugustPhuket Wan erports a late night meeting reached no conclusion. No flights today? These people are starting to hurt Phuket... Samak still refuses to step down, but I just heard on the BBC news that the army chief has "suggested" that Samak should step down. Reports in the Thai papers say that a large pro-government group is gathering in Bangkok. One hopes the pro's and the anti's don't start any argy bargy.Saturday evening 30th AugustWell, a lovely sunny day here. I have "caught the sun". Nice. But not nice if you are supposed to be flying in or out of Phuket today. This is going to make a few people rather annoyed. Kr...

Phuket Butterfly Garden
2008-08-27 15:14:00 We had been once before to the Phuket Butterfly Garden, years ago when our daughter was little and before our son was born. Somehow never made it back until a couple of weeks ago. Our daughter said she wanted to go again. She'd just been on a school "field trip" and they'd been studying the life cycle of the butterfly, so I think butterflies were one of her current favourite things. The full name is Phuket Butterfly Garden and Insect World - yes, they have more than just butterflies! It's just north of Phuket town in the Sam Kong area not far from Tesco Lotus. It's reasonably well signposted, not too hard to find.. they also have a pick up service which can be quite a good deal (see the website link below). Entrance is 300 Baht for adults, 150 Baht for kids. Adult in this case means over 10 years old. Locals like us pay a bit less, but I think that's only fair for "regular" local visitors... twice already! And we'll go again soon, as after we'd left our daughter told us we'd ...

New Lonely Planet Guide to Phuket
2008-08-23 02:40:00 It was a few months ago that a guy called Adam visited our office and said he was doing some research for a new Lonely Planet guidebook all about Phuket. He explained this was a new kind of guide. Rather than try to pack the entire SE Asia region or the whole of Thailand into a guidebook that ends up weighing 2 kilos and is out of date by the time it's published, the new idea is to make small pocket sized guides to single destinations, ideal for holidaymakers. Sounded good - a small, detailed guidebook with way more information about Phuket than you can find squeezed into any Thailand guide."Looking for information about Phuket? You've come to the right place!", said the author of Jamie's Phuket! I and Khun Wan, our all-knowing secretary/accountant then supplied Adam with an information overload. Wan also helped him out with translations and interviews. I think Adam stayed about a month in Phuket travelling all over the island. Very nice guy - you can see his website here: Adam S...

Exploring Phuket Town
2008-08-05 15:58:00 I have always liked Phuket Town. Big enough to be interesting, small enough to be easily explored, busy but without crazy traffic (most of the traffic bypasses the town), lots of interesting areas, hills and views, parks, temples, local people who seem rather detached from the tourism that grips the main beaches. Phuket Town is where you can find local life a plenty, local festivals and a different nightlife scene to the tourist zones.I realised today there is a lot of information relating to Phuket Town on this blog, so this post is a way to tie it all together. I still want to blog more about the town - the big fresh market for example and the Chinese shrines, and one day I must "blog" a ride on the local buses that run from town all over the island. There are also loads of little specialist shops that you just can't find anywhere else. As I say, I like Phuket Town, always something new to find. The Top 10 Hotels in Phuket
2008-07-25 10:02:00 If you're planning a trip to Phuket, you are almost certainly going to need a place to stay unless you already bought a house or have friends living here. Phuket has a huge variety of accommodation available from backpackers dorms to 5 stat (6 star?) luxury resorts. You'll find a page of recommended Phuket hotels on the blog already, and I try to add another hotel every month or so. The hotels on the recommendation page are ones I like because of their location, or because they've been recommended to me by others, or because they offer something different. But what are the BEST hotels in Phuket?Well, don't ask me. I have a house, so don't stay in hotels. The following Top 10 list is based on the Phuket hotel reviews on TripAdvisor.com, which is one of the biggest travel sites online, with reviews, forums, advice (and advertising, which is how they make their money). The reviews are by real tourists who have stayed in the hotels, and if you take a look, you'll see honest review...

Hotel Recommendation: Phuket Airport Hotel
2008-07-17 18:49:00 I seem to keep recommending people to book the Phuket Airport Hotel. I think the reason is because it offers something different, which is the kind of place I like! When you hear the words "Airport Hotel" it does conjour up images of a 500 room concrete block attached to the terminal.. but not this one.The small family-run hotel is just one minute drive from Phuket International Airport and Nai Yang beach. Even though it's so close to the airport, the hotel is peaceful and has a secluded feel - noise pollution is minimal, as it does not lie under the flight path. Simon and Wan and their staff work hard to make Phuket Airport Hotel something special. There are only ten beautifully decorated bungalows which all face the hotel?s small swimming pool. There is free wifi internet available too. Nai Yang beach is about a 15-minute walk from the hotel, though if you ask nicely someone will give you a ride down to the water...The main reason most people stay here is the location. Got an ea...

Phuket News - Where to find it...
2008-07-08 15:37:00 I try to keep up and post some of the latest Phuket news stories on my Phuket News page, along with some not-to-be-forgotten old news stories. There's not normally any "big" news in Phuket, but if you want to get a feel for what goes on, it's worth checking the news before you travel, and not just the weather forecast! There are a number of local newspapers and magazines in Phuket, mostly they are just dressed up advertising, especially with regards to restaurant "reviews" and property news. If you want real news, there's really only one choice. The Phuket Gazette has been around since 1993, when Phuket tourism was still (relatively) in it's infancy. I've been reading it (mostly online) since I came here in 1999. Sometimes the news is thin on the ground, sometimes there are 3 articles per day. The Gazette has more than just news - there's an extensive classified section, a job section, "issues and answers" and the "queer news" too. The news is mostly local, often reporting on cr...

Tsunami drill in Phuket
2008-07-07 20:42:00 There was a tsunami drill held in each of the six Andaman provinces today. There are 79 warning towers across the Andaman region, with 19 of those located in Phuket. The sirens sounded and the drill was conducted in a similar manner to the previous tsunami drills. I sometimes wonder how effective these drills are. They ...
HotelTravel.com - A Phuket Success Story
2008-07-01 12:10:00 A few months ago, I had an email from HotelTravel.com asking about advertising or setting up partner links with this here Phuket blog. Which was nice. HotelTravel.com is a big banana on the internet, and I had been wondering if they had any affiliate program, as it's a top quality website and always seems to pop up in Google searches... they must be doing well, I thought. The HotelTravel.com website is very easy to use, rates are low and there are live agents waiting to chat - and I mean there really ARE live agents.. I always thought that was a bit of a con, the live agent button, normally redirecting you to a call center in Bangalore or something, but I have seen the HotelTravel live agents! Rather than do everything by email, I printed out the partner agreement and visited their office which is right here in Phuket. Only when I saw the offices did I realise what a big company it is. This was impressive! It looked very modern and efficient, I was quite taken aback, as things in Th...

BK magazine is coming to Phuket
2008-07-01 06:49:00 Interesting bit of news today. The guys behind BK mag (Asia/Azia City) are setting up a tourist rag in Phuket. For anyone who might want a job in the media in Phuket, now’s your chance. I’m guessing the salary would be pretty decent, but I just find it hard to imagine that there is room ...
Jamie's Phuket on Google Earth
2008-06-28 07:02:00 Over the last couple of weeks, bit by bit, I have been adding placemarks on Google Earth showing where to find the hotels, restaurants, temples, beaches and hills that feature on Jamie's Phuket. I joined the "Google Earth Community" to be able to post on the Google Earth forum which creates a link to the places I have added. So, if you browse this blog now you will notice that almost all pages have links to Google Earth - click on the link and what happens is this: If you have Google Earth installed on your computer, then it will open and you'll fly in to Phuket and see the placemarker. You may have a message on screen first asking "Do you wish to open or save this file?" - click Open. For example, if you are looking at some of the restaurants on this blog and like the look of Kan Eang Seafood, and want to know where it is, just click on the link that says "See location on Google Earth", and you'll see this:If you fancy an evening walk at Bang Wad Reservoir, click the link on that ...

Guesthouses and Hostels - Phuket for Backpackers
2008-06-23 10:52:00 It's fair to say that Phuket is more of an "upmarket" destination compared to backpackers hangouts like Koh Pha Ngan or Koh Tao. I am sorry to say you can't find little bamboo bungalows on the beach for 150 Baht a night in Phuket, and you don't have much in the way of backpacker oriented bars and nightlife. Over the years, Phuket has moved more into the luxury market, with many 4 - 5 star resorts around the island, and I have seen huge changes in infrastructure in the 9 years that I have been here. Not just hotels, but marinas, luxury condos, many housing developments, shopping centers such as Jungceylon and Central Festival... The list goes on and on...Not all of this is for tourists of course, in fact most of it benefits the local people and foreign residents more than tourists. Many foreigners have decided that Phuket is a great place to live (see Buying a House in Phuket for more information), and the money coming into Phuket has made plenty of local people wealthy - a look a...
