Regina Benjamin, MD, Family Physician
2009-07-13 18:35:00
I was pleasantly surprised when I turned on the TV at the noon hour to see the President nominate Regina Benjamin, MD, MBA to be the next Surgeon General. Since the election, there has been much speculation on who the next Surgeon General would be. And, even today, this news is probably going to be overshadowed by news like the President's nominee to the Supreme Court.I just wanted to share an experience that I had with Dr. Benjamin which continues to inspire me today. If you didn't already know, Dr. Benjamin is a Family Physician (like I am). I first heard Dr. Benjamin's story when she was a keynote speaker at the 2006 American Academy of Family Physicians National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students. I chaired the planning committee that year. (I also moderated a panel that year. Click here to learn more about that). To put this into context, this conference was almost exactly one year following Hurricane Katrina. I don't exactly remember the theme of t...

Mumbai thoughts from Indian Physician
2008-11-28 12:17:00
Our good blog friend Vijay is a radiologist in the state/province of Tamil Nadu in India. Like the rest of us, he learned of the situation in Mumbai via twitter. And, those of us who know Vijay were sending supportive "tweets" when we were watching all the live coverage on television/internet.Vijay recorded a Scan Man Speaks podcast yesterday to share his thoughts on the situation. Podcasts are so cool in that it really brings the blog off the page - and lets you hear the passion and emotion of the writer. The podcast is about 20 minutes long and you will need iTunes to listen to it. The last five minutes of the recording are very good. I also encourage you to subscribe to the Scanman twitter feed to get the thoughts of a citizen of India during this tragedy.

Thirteen patients have died so far, and Dr. Green, along with his assistant and a pharmacist, face 118 federal charges that include administering and prescribing drugs "not for a legitimate medical purpose and outside the usual course of professional practice."

Organic wear? Makeup by Physician?s Formula
2008-03-17 02:46:00
Makeup touches our skin almost 365 days a year. Everyday women put themselves through daily rituals to gain the perfect complexion; the right foundation, the right mix of eye color, and making sure the racoon eyes don’t show up. Since we torture our skin so much, we scream for makeup that is healthy. Quite ...
Physician Leaders
2008-03-15 20:39:00
Physicians are facing challenges at every turn…lower reimbursements, higher malpractice insurance rates and an increasingly litigious public just to name a few of the challenges. In his recent USA Today article, Dr. Kevin Pho does a terrific job of describing another major systemic challenge; a lack of primary care physicians. I am proud of the fact that iMedExchange has been a supporter of Dr. Kevin, as he is commonly known. A prolific blogger, and general conveyer of common sense, he’s an exemplary leader through his writing. As the iMedExchange online community for physicians evolves, we are privileged to associate with, and hopefully support, the hundreds of thousands of physicians making a difference in their respective community. I welcome you to join the community and share your thoughts and opinions with physician colleagues in a safe and engaging environment.
The Philoso-Physician
2008-03-14 20:08:00
The internet's most popular philosophy podcast now has a brand spanking new tool to create customized podcast feeds tailored to your needs! Stefan Molyneux, host of Freedomain Radio, has put together a web-based wizard called the Philoso-Physician. It exists to "diagnose" your philosophical needs and desires through a short series of questions. You can either choose to narrow your search in the Philoso-Physician through choosing from a series of questions or a series of categories. With each option you choose broad samples at first, and then are asked to narrow the field within each broad option you chose. And it's all check -boxes. Click, click, click, done. The best part (in my opinion) is that the final page not only shows you the results of your "check-up" with the Philoso-Physician with a short description and link to each podcast that fits your requests, but it also can e-mail you a link to a custom .xml feed for all of those podcasts. For those of you who don't speak geek, ...

Physician Recruiter : Tips To getting jobs
2008-02-20 03:43:00
Good stuff:One other thing that I strongly recommend is leaving out Objectives and Interests/Hobbies.#1) If you’re a physician and you’ve submitted your CV/Resume you’re probably interested in work as a physician. If that isn’t the case and/or you want to get more specific as to what you’re looking for, the cover letter is a much larger and more appropriate forum to do so.#2) Like it or not, very few employers care if you like SCUBA or reading spy novels or horseback riding or model trains or whatever. There are preconceptions, however, that a lot of people have about activities that are often included in an Interests/Hobbies section of a CV/resume. What if a hiring authority has a negative feeling towards someone/somtehing associated with fly fishing or rock climbing and you’ve included it on your CV? As a recruiter, I’ve seen candidates disqualified for seemingly harmless inclusions simply because of strange prejudices that the hiring authority has against certain in...
Physician Job Search Tips: How To Get A Higher Salary
2008-02-20 03:38:00
Whenever a physician is looking for a job, one of the biggest concerns is usually “how can I get the highest salary?”In addition to finding a position in the right location, with the right schedule, work environment and growth potential, it is important for a doctor to earn as much money as possible. More specifically, it is important for a physician to have the highest starting salary as possible when accepting a job offer. Where a doctor’s income starts is a good indicator of how far their salary will grow in the years to come. While negotiating a salary package is often the most intimidating part of the physician job search, it is actually the easiest! The best way to receive more money from an employer is to ask for it.It’s really as simple as that.Once a doctor has undergone the interview process and a physician group or hospital has offered a job, the doctor knows that this employer is interested in them! The group WANTS to hire the doctor! The physician now has more con...
The importance of grammar for the physician CV and cover letter
2008-02-20 03:36:00
Recently I received an email solicitation from a company that I know to be a successful, profitable organization. The email went on and on about why I should employ their services. It touted their past success rates, excellent promotions, etc. But I could only focus on one thing: The name of the company was misspelled in several places throughout the email. I couldn’t believe that an error this grievous had slipped through, but there it was. And because of it, I lost a lot of respect for this organization, despite all the impressive facts and figures they threw at me.If the most intelligent, accomplished physician in the world can’t present a well-written CV and cover letter, none of the accolades will mean much to prospective employers. Remember that the employer reading the resume probably doesn’t know anything about this doctor except for what he/she sees on paper. Friends and colleagues might overlook a sloppy email because they know the physician is a brilliant surgeon or...

Is Physician Neglect Costing Smoking Patients Life?
2008-02-13 23:59:00
by John R. PolitoPhysicians will exhaust their knowledge base, energy and skills to stop bleeding and save the patient's life. But when the smoking patient arrives, a patient whose circulatory and respiratory systems are being gradually devastated by chemical addiction to smoking nicotine, the patient's self-destruction and slow suicide are either ignored, or they are reminded of the obvious, "you need to quit smoking."On February 7, the World Health Organization released a 342-page report entitled "WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic 2008." It opens with a full page reminder that, "in the 20th century, the tobacco epidemic killed 100 million people worldwide." It then predicts that, "during the 21st century, it could kill one billion."If true, how much culpability should be attributed to medical haste, apathy regarding smoking related disease processes, or ignorance of such elementary nicotine dependency recovery concepts as the "Law of Addiction," a principle backed by the...
Medical Billing by Non Physician Practitioners (NPP)
2008-02-09 07:47:00
Who are the Non-Physician Practitioners and can they also bill the patients? Well by non physicians we are referring to the,Physician Assistants (PA)Nurse Practitioners (NP)Yes they can also bill the patient. There are two concepts in billing here. They are,Direct method - Here the PA or NP is provided a unique number and services are billed under the non-physician practitioner's name itself.Incident-to billing method - Here service is provided under a physician's supervision and billing is in the Physician's name. What are the criteria for an "incident-to" billing? According to Medicare Manual, the PA or NP services may be billed "incident-to" a physician's care if they are:An integral, although incidental part of the physician's professional service.Commonly rendered without charge or included in the physician's bill.Of a type commonly furnished in physicians' office or clinics.Furnished by the Physician or by auxiliary personnel under the physician's direct supervision. Point-of-Care: the Physician?s Interactive Notebook
2008-01-28 13:00:00
[DEMO 08] This new application built on Adobe Air is an interesting health record solution. Acesis claims that their software is better tailored to the way physicians work and think, unlike existing health IT solutions. Point of care provides a secure and flexible data capture system with structured medical vocabularies for reporting and analysis. Physicians can easily create and modify templates and forms dynamically expand based on prior responses, helping physicians focus on appropriate lines of clinical inquiry. I would like to test it to see how intuitive the user interface is, even if I am not a doctor. The article will be updated with a link to the demonstration video in the next few days. Bellissima! Physician’s Formula 3-in-1 Brow-Tweez
2008-01-17 01:00:00
One of my all-time favorite drugstore brands, Physician's Formula, has come out with a 3-in-1 eyebrow tweezer, definer, and brow comb called Brow-Tweez. Intrigued? Here's how it works. One side of the wand contains a minisized pair of stainless-steel tweezers, and the other side houses the brow pencil. The cap of the pencil side also comes equipped with a minisized brow brush. It's pretty much everything you'd need for on-the-go grooming. Brow-Tweez is available in three different shades (dark brown, light brown, and dark blonde) to suit most eyebrows and hair tones. Also, it is fragrance free, hypoallergenic, and safe for those who wear contact lenses. The best part is that all of this costs just $7.95. Getting gorgeous brows doesn't have to break the bank. When I find a bargain this great, I just can't resist. What do you think of Brow-Tweez?

Obesity and the Primary Care Physician
2007-12-26 23:54:00
A significant portion of the time spent in the evaluation and treatment of the obese patient can be expedited by use of protocols and procedures. A self-administered medical history questionnaire can be either mailed to the patient prior to the initial visit or completed in the waiting room. In addition to standard questions, sections of the form should inquire about past obesity treatment programs, a body weight history, current diet and physical activity levels, social support, and goalsand expectations. The review-of-systems section can include medical prompts that are more commonly seen among the obese, such as snoring, morning headaches and daytime sleepiness (for obstructive sleep apnea), urinary incontinence, intertrigo, and sexual dysfunction, among others.Identifying the body mass index (BMI) as a fifth vital sign may also increase physician wareness and prompt counseling. This method was successfully used in a recent study where a smoking status stamp was placed on the pat...

Pharmaceutical Thought Leader Physician Salaries
2007-12-12 09:06:00
A Thought Leader in simple English would be an individual who is influential in his or her thoughts and inputs about a given industry. It was something new
