Superhard, Super Slippery Diamonds
2008-07-16 09:41:00 They call diamonds ?ice,? and not just because they sparkle. Engineers and physicists have long studied diamond because even though the material is as hard as an ice ball to the head, diamond slips and slides with remarkably low friction, making it an ideal material or coating for seals, high performance tools and high-tech moving parts.Robert Carpick, associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics at the University of Pennsylvania, and his group led a collaboration with researchers from Argonne National Laboratories, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Florida to determine what makes diamond films such slippery customers, settling a debate on the scientific origin of its properties and providing new knowledge that will help create the next generation of super low friction materials. The Penn experiments, the first study of diamond friction convincingly supported by spectroscopy, looked at two of the main hypotheses posited...

some ideas about the physics of the hydro-assist technology, and implicatio
2008-05-09 22:50:00 A friend just asked for my opinion of the "hydro-assist fuel cell" modification. I don't know whether or not it works, but if it does work, there are limited ways in which it could, and these appear to me to be potentially problematic. I haven't searched the CR4 site to see if this has already been

Wired: Iron Man's suit defies physics
2008-05-05 06:52:00 Although sometimes I wish I have the smarts to become a nuclear physicist, most of the time I'm glad I don't. Especially after reading Wired's amusing article on why Iron Man's suit defies physics. Here's one of the contentions on Iron Man's repulsor rays:Similarly, the directed energy weapons Iron Man uses, such as the "repulsor rays" built into the palms of his gloves, should require that Stark drag along a large power generator whenever he faces off against the Mandarin or Titanium Man. I'm not exactly sure what a "repulsor ray" is, but if it's anything like a high-power laser, then the energy demands are considerable.Even assuming that Iron Man can convert any stored energy in his suit into laser light with 100 percent efficiency, then to generate a beam powerful enough to melt a fist-size hole through a half-inch thick steel plate (which any comic book fan can tell you is well within Shellhead's capabilities) would require an energy pulse of more than 2 gigawatts of pow...

Phun: the 2d physics sandbox! - verdict? AWESOME.
2008-04-30 19:25:00 So I have kids and I am constantly looking for fun, educational, entertaining, games for them to play. I like discovering open source free applications that satisfy this most of all. Some examples of great programs: tux paint and tux typing. Phun is different. Where those two programs excel in teaching kids, Phun is just fun. It's interactive in a way that not many programs are. It actually has the playability that feels much like an RTS. It does what you make it do now. You add something and the environment acts upon it. Watch this video. > > And it's a toy...except it isn't: Radial engine: > > > Gears: > > > It's a remarkable achievement. One big benefit I see in Phun over the other kid applications I've found is that Phun uses an almost standard application user interface. The user needs to navigate menus and toolbars and context menus. The other kid apps focus on learning something or d...

A Giant of Astronomy and a Quantum of Solace
2008-04-08 20:28:00 --> Cerro Paranal, the 2600m high mountain in the Chilean Atacama Desert that hosts ESO's Very Large Telescope, will be the stage for scenes in the next James Bond movie, "Quantum of Solace".Looking akin to Mars, with its red sand and lack of vegetation, the Atacama Desert is thought to be the driest place on Earth. Cerro Paranal is home to ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT), which, with its array of four giant 8.2-m individual telescopes, is the world's most advanced optical observatory. The high-altitude site and extreme dryness make excellent conditions for astronomical observations. "We needed a unique site for a unique set of telescopes, and we found it at Paranal," said Andreas Kaufer, ESO's Paranal Director. "We are very excited that the Bond production team have also chosen this location." The excellent astronomical conditions at Paranal come at a price, however. In this forbidding desert environment, virtually nothing can grow outside. The humidity drops below 10...

Flash Demo #9: Keyboard Control and Ball Physics
2008-04-08 15:38:00 Ah, it's about time I picked up Flash again! This demo is the result of 12 grueling hours of scouring every scrap of documentation I could find. Promising New Nanotechnology for Spinal Cord Injury
2008-04-02 22:13:00 A spinal cord injury often leads to permanent paralysis and loss of sensation below the site of the injury because the damaged nerve fibers can't regenerate. The nerve fibers or axons have the capacity to grow again, but don?t because they're blocked by scar tissue that develops around the injury. Northwestern University researchers have shown that a nano-engineered gel inhibits the formation of scar tissue at the injury site and enables the severed spinal cord fibers to regenerate and grow. The gel is injected as a liquid into the spinal cord and self -assembles into a scaffold that supports the new nerve fibers as they grow up and down the spinal cord, penetrating the site of the injury. When the gel was injected into mice with a spinal cord injury, after six weeks the animals had a greatly enhanced ability to use their hind legs and walk. The research is published today in the April 2 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience."We are very excited about this," said lead author John Kes...

Physicists discover how fundamental particles lose track of quantum mechani
2008-03-16 21:09:00 Science Express, the advance online publication of the journal Science, researchers report a series of experiments that mark an important step toward understanding a longstanding fundamental physics problem of quantum mechanics. The scientists presented their findings at the annual meeting of the American Physical Society here this week. The problem the physicists addressed is how a fundamental particle in matter loses track of its quantum mechanical properties through interactions with its environment. The research was performed by scientists at the California NanoSystems Institute at the University of California, Santa Barbara and the U. S. Department of Energy Ames Laboratory in Iowa. At the quantum level things like particles or light waves behave in ways very different from what scientists expect in a human-scale world. In the quantum world, for example, an electron can exist in two places at the same time, what is called a "superposition" of states, or spin up and down at the ...

New discovery at Jupiter could help protect Earth-orbit satellites
2008-03-10 15:23:00 Radio waves accelerate electrons within Jupiter's magnetic field in the same way as they do on Earth Radio waves accelerate electrons within Jupiter?s magnetic field in the same way as they do on Earth, according to new research published in Nature Physics this week. The discovery overturns a theory that has held sway for more than a generation and has important implications for protecting Earth-orbiting satellites. Using data collected at Jupiter by the Galileo spacecraft, Dr Richard Horne of British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and colleagues from the University of California, Los Angeles, and the University of Iowa found that a special type of very low frequency radio wave is strong enough to accelerate electrons up to very high energies inside Jupiter?s magnetic field. According to lead author, Dr Richard Horne, ?We?ve shown before that very low frequency radio waves can accelerate electrons in the Earth?s magnetic field, but we have now shown that exactly the same theory works...

Dirty Space and Supernovae
2008-03-02 13:11:00 Interstellar space may be strewn with tiny whiskers of carbon, dimming the light of far-away objects. This discovery by scientists at the Carnegie Institution may have implications for the ?dark energy? hypothesis, proposed a decade ago in part to explain the unexpected dimness of certain stellar explosions called Type1a supernovae. Type1a supernovae are among the brightest objects in the universe. Astronomers use them as ?standard candles? to gauge cosmological distances: brighter-appearing supernovae are closer, dimmer ones are farther away. In the late 1990s some astronomers noticed that some seemed too dim?too far away?to be explained by conventional theories of the universe?s expansion. This led to the hypothesis that the expansion was accelerating, pushed along by an unknown form of energy ? dark energy. In the current study, published online February 28 inScience Express, Andrew Steele and Marc Fries of the Carnegie Institution?s Geophysical Laboratory report th...
