Human Physiology: The Mechanisms of Body Function
2008-05-21 17:18:00 Human Physiology is a text designed to teach the functions of the human body from a mechanistic approach, stressing homeostasis and control systems. The fundamental purpose of this book has remained undeniably the same: to present the principles and facts of human physiology in a format that is suitable for undergraduates regardless of academic background or field of study. Human Physiology, eighth edition, carries on the tradition of clarity and accuracy, while refining and updating the content to meet the needs of today’s instructors and students. Mechanistic approach. Physiology is explained as a dynamic process of clearly defined chains of causal links. This approach prevents students from viewing physiology as a memorizing exercise -- students must understand causal links and processes within the context of homeostasis. This mirrors the experience they will have in the clinical setting.Chapter Sections. Most text chapters are broken down into sections which contain their ...

Chapter 1 sets the scene for physical needs in child development, such as the need to be warm and safe. Chapters 2 to 9 cover the body systems: skeletal; nervous; cardiovascular; respiratory; renal; digestive; reproductive; and immune. The embryology and physiological function at birth is explored in each chapter before the text moves on through the many changes over the next decade to puberty and the arrival at adult functioning. A new final chapter provides a holistic account of children's development, body and mind. Each chapter is illustrated with line d...

Hypertension
2007-10-19 10:10:00 Hypertension is defined as the presence of a blood pressure (BP) elevation to a level that places patients at increased risk for target organ damage in several vascular beds, including the retina, brain, heart, kidneys, and large conduit arteriesEtiology Of all hypertensive patients, 90% have essential hypertension; the remainderhave hypertension secondary to causes such as renal parenchymal disease, renovascular disease, pheochromocytoma, Cushing syndrome, primary hyperaldosteronism, coarctation of the aorta, and uncommon autosomal-dominant or -recessive diseases of the adrenalâ??renal axis that result in salt retention.Blood pressure readings are measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and usually given as 2 numbers. For example, 140 over 90 (written as 140/90).* The top number is your systolic pressure, the pressure created when your heart beats. It is considered high if it is consistently over 140.* The bottom number is your diastolic pressure, the pressure inside blood vessel...

Asthma
2007-10-09 15:21:00 Asthma is a chronic disease that affects your airways. If you have asthma, the inside walls of your airways are inflamed (swollen). The inflammation (IN-fla-MAY-shun) makes the airways very sensitive, and they tend to react strongly to things that you are allergic to or find irritating. When the airways react, they get narrower, and less air flows through to your lung tissue. This causes symptoms like wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), coughing, chest tightness, and trouble breathing, especially at night and in the early morning. These episodes may be triggered by such things as exposure to an environmental stimulant (or alergeen) cold air, warm air, moist air, Exerciseor exertion, or emotional stress In children, the most common triggers are viral illnesses such as those that cause the Common Cold.Asthma cannot be cured, but most people with asthma can control it so that they have few and infrequent sym...

Amylin - Physiology and Pharmacology
2007-07-31 20:47:00 Book DescriptionDeciphers amylin's physiology and reveals previously unrecognized mechanisms fundamental to control body weight and fuel homeostasis. Also discusses therapeutic utility of amylin as the first new medicine to treat diabetes since insulin.*Provides a current comprehensive treatment of amylin the hormone*Identifies the majority of amylin's physiologic functions From the Back CoverBy 1994, researchers had progressed toward an understanding of amylin's function, and its therapeutic utility. Amylin's physiology has proven to be surprisingly more simple and elegant than originally conceived. Deciphering amylin's physiology has revealed previously unrecognized mechanisms, fundamental to the control of body weight and fuel homeostasis that are of general physiologic interest, and beyond an interest simply in the peptide itself. The propagation of this knowledge has been hindered by the entanglement of physiologic discovery with the high-risk business of drug development ...
Is It True That Cats Don?t See In Colour?
2007-07-28 18:19:00 Cats do not see exactly in ‘full colour’. Although cats would appear to see the world almost in an overlapping binocular ‘night vision’ of greys, whites and blacks (when darkness falls, they need acute visual abilities), tests suggest that they can gradually discriminate between colours. Cats combine all their senses to ‘feel’ their way around, ...

Neurophysiology Of Magical Alphabets
2007-07-17 05:07:00 ?' ??? ???"?An excerpt from Nigel Pennick's Magical Alphabets:It is generally recognized that all archaic symbols had a magical and religious significance. In legend, they were given by the gods to human beings. But modern research on human perception may provide us with another possibility, one embedded deeply within our own human consciousness. Modern neurophysiology has identified phosphenes, geometrical shapes and images that are present subconsciously in the visual cortex and neural system. These are present in all humans: they are described as entropic, being visible when the eyes are shut. They can also be seen when the consiousness is altered by some means: during meditation, in trance, or in hallucinations induced by fatigue, illness or drugs. Geometric shapes related to letters are often perceived in the early stages of trance. These states of consciousness are the domain of the shaman, the human who treads the thin line between life and death in his or her quest for enli...

Why do we need to know all this physiology?
2007-07-05 06:10:00 We were told by a physician before an exam review session: Students sometimes ask me why they need to know all this respiratory physiology. I simply tell them, About 14 months from now you will be in third year. With that comes responsibility. For example, one day, you will get paged, and the nurse will tell you, "Mrs. S.'s oxygen saturation just dropped to 80% (life-threatening). The resident is in surgery, and the attending physician is in the ER resuscitating somebody.... ...what do we do?"That's what third year is like. That's why you need to know all this respiratory physiology. So, you might want to learn this. My class has never been that quiet.
