2010-10-28 13:00:00
By Karen Kwan You keep hearing how incredible a workout Pilates is?it can help build strength, flexibility and improve your posture and balance?and you?ve decided to take some classes. But should you try mat work or the Reformer? ?The two are designed to be complementary,? says Margot McKinnon, founder and studio director of Body Harmonics Pilates. ?We ...
Top 3 Pilates Tips for Beginners
2009-09-14 17:15:00
Not only does Pilates give you a rockin' core and lean muscles, it's also a great activity for people with injuries and the focus on the abdominals really helped improve my core awareness in yoga. However, it took me awhile to warm up to Pilates. In my first group class, the movements all seemed weird, useless or too small. I remember thinking, "I missed yoga for this?" It wasn't until I had the opportunity to do private sessions that I got it....

Bar Method - Combination of Yoga, Pilates and Ballet
2008-05-28 18:08:00
If you find free weights intimidating or the typical class is too boring, you may want to try Bar Method. When I read about Bar Method, on the first glance, I saw similarities between Bar Method and Yoga or Pilates and even ballet because of its focus in stretching and strengthening of the core muscles. ...
Pilates Session Etiquette
2008-05-24 20:56:00
As a studio owner in the busy wealthy suburbs of Philadelphia, I learned quickly that people have no limitations in terms of cell phone usage. People would be on the phone in the hall, on the reformer, in class. They needed it in case of emergency nanny, school, or office calls (but seemed to answer the phones at all times anyway). Now Stephanie Pierson and Barbara Harrison of The Huffingtom Post have assured me that some etiquette rules must apply in the Pilates studio."Consider your priorities. 'Definitely not during Pilates class. If it's your own private training session, it's your dollar and your time. But it sends a strong message to your trainer as to your priorities,' says Melanie Melillo, Fitness Director at Women For Fitness."Don't be rude to your Pilates teacher. Put the digital device down for an hour!Tags: Pilates, blackberry, etiquette, lynda lippin
Where's the Wii Fit Pilates?
2008-05-22 20:39:00
OK, I am fascinated by the Wii Fit as I have never been with any other video game or exercise product before. It just sounds so cool to have feedback in terms of weight distribution, balance, and statistics (BMI, weight, etc) while exercising--almost like having a personal trainer. So I avidly scour the web for Wii Fit reviews.Today I read a Wii Fit review from Mom Logic which confirmed my need to get one of these things asap (especially if they add Pilates to the roster)."It feels really weird at first to get a workout from a video game, but it doesn't take me long to get hooked.I'm a multi-tasking mom (who isn't?), so I love any device that can multi-task as well. Now that I can get some use out of the Wii too, it makes me feel less guilty about spending 300 bucks on it in the first place. And it will be a great workout for days that are too rainy or too hot to exercise outside. Finally, I'm thankful to have another fun thing in common with daughter, who only occasionally th...
Diary of A Live In Pilates Teacher
2008-05-20 20:02:00
I have been asked several times to work privately for individuals or families as a live-in, travel-with Pilates teacher and personal trainer. And at times I have seriously considered the offers. How bad could it be to work a few hours a day, travel to Europe, the Caribbean, and Asia, and get good pay with housing and food? Then I remember how much I love my privacy, my personal space, and my independence. I happened one day upon a great blog that tells the story of why the whole live in teacher thing is not all it is cracked up to be. Here is the description of The Eloise Chronicles: Diary of the Live In Help:"The following blog postings are the emails I sent to family and close friends during the summer of 2005, when I was the live-in Pilates instructor to Eloise Margot Gewurtztraminer Bourgeois Alcock (not her real name), a very very wealthy woman who summered on Brandywine Way (not its real name) in _____Hampton. Pilates for Better Sex DVD
2008-05-18 19:34:00
I finally went through some of my Google news alerts that were sitting in my email in box and found a great article that reviews a new DVD, Pilates for Sex. Unfortunately, the fun sounding video received a big fat "F" from the Washington Post reviewer."'[T]here sure was a lot of talking,' particularly about kegel and other exercises to strengthen women's pelvic muscles. More of a lecture, less of a workout, in other words. 'I eventually got so bored, I stopped,' ...not big praise for a video with sex in the title."Tags: Pilates, Videos, Reviews, pilates for sex, pilates for better sex, lynda lippin
Ab Cramps & Pilates
2008-05-15 00:14:00
I received a question from the Ask Experts site that I feel the need to share, since this is coming up more and more with the advent of mass Pilates DVDs and underqualified instructors.Question:"Hi, I am a beginner in Pilates, when I try to do the V shape or half way crunch, I get a HORRIBLY painful cramp right below my rib cage on the right side, it stops me cold. I feel like I'll never get rid of this flabby belly that ruins all of my cute outfits. Have you heard of this?"First, no Pilates beginner should be doing the teaser (the V shape), which is an intermediate/advanced exercise that requires deeper abdominal recruitment to avoid overusing the hip flexors and external obliques.Second, there is nothing "Crunch" like in Pilates. We do not tighten & compress the midsection like someone who has buttoned his vest to his pants, but seek to strengthen the muscles functionally without compression by using the pelvic floor and transverse abdominus.I hate this mass production of Pila...
Effects of Bad Form in Pilates
2008-05-13 15:15:00
Badly done Pilates (or any ab work, for that matter) can compress your back and actually cause your abs to stick out instead of pulling in. Since there is no real certification body in the Caribbean, until PhysicalMind came here you never knew if your teacher was certified or how they were trained. Even Pilates studios in the US may not always know what to do! Here is a question I answered at AllExperts.com that is a scary example of why you need to make sure you have a qualified teacher.Question -i have been doing pilates for over a year now. i go to a small(4-5 people) tower mat class. i have also done a few privatelessons.my problem is that my abs have built outward instead of flat. ican't seem to get concave when i do the exercises. i did theprivates in hopes of correcting this. the instructor helped meget into better position...one that she said is correct. however, that was in october and my muscles are still bulging out now injune. i can't do other ab exercises like...

Lesley Powell on Pilates and the Shoulders
2008-05-06 17:07:00
Lesley Powell of Movements Afoot Pilates in NYC is a great friend and a fabulous Pilates teacher. I have learned a lot over the years from working with her and I refer most of my New York Parrot Cay Pilates guests to continue their work at her studio. She has written a truly informative article for Pilates Pro, Freeing the Shoulders to Connect to the Core, which begins with a pretty contentious statement,“'Push your shoulders down.'”We hear that phrase frequently in Pilates studios, but I say it’s time to throw that cue out. Why? For most people, pressing the shoulders down freezes the shoulder girdle’s function and interrupts its natural rhythm."If you're a Pilates teacher who uses that cue and wonders why your client's shoulders remain tight and stuck, or you are a Pilates student who would like better and looser shoulder function, read this article today! I have changed my cuing since working with Lesley and others over the years and me and my clients are all the b...

More Horrifying Pilates Marketing
2008-05-05 19:04:00
I thought it couldn't get much worse in the Pilates market until I saw this Pilates Joe franchise opportunity in my google alert! So what do they have to say?"Pilates Joe - Bringing Quality Pilates to the Masses.Until now, Pilates students had to make a choice - either join group Pilates classes for a watered-down version of true Pilates instruction or pay US$50 to US$100 per hour for quality, one-on-one Pilates mentoring. Pilates Joe gives its franchisees the opportunity to offer Pilates instruction that's truly the best of both worlds - dynamic, interactive group Pilates sessions with one-on-one attention from certified Pilates Joe instructors. "Wait--this is a group Pilates class with a certified instructor who will walk around, correct people, and pay attention to individual issues. Sounds like the group Pilates classes that I teach and that most organizations train you to teach (PhysicalMind Institute, Balanced Body University, Power Pilates). They give you manuals, training...
Finally, A Critic of Winsor Pilates
2008-05-04 18:40:00
OK, many of my long term readers and friends know my feelings about Mari Winsor. She has sold out, put her name out there endorsing every piece of crap form of pilates-esque home exercise equipment and pumps out millions of injury producing DVDs to the unsuspecting masses. Worse, her name is out there so much that people who don't know much about Pilates assume that all Pilates is Winsor Pilates (yuck!). Basically, Winsor Pilates is Bad Pilates! So I was thrilled to open my google alert one day and see the headline, Winsor Pilates not for everyone. I quote,"Two years ago, I saw Daisy Fuentes, former star of "America's Funniest Videos," advertise on television the Winsor Pilates' FatBurning Program.Daisy is so beautiful, she could probably sell me a bridge. I was 58 years old. It had been a long time since I had bench-pressed 300 pounds. I have had surgeries and other health issues. According to Teamtalk.com, Crystal Palace winger Paul Ifill plans to spend his summer rehabilitating from the back injuries that have plagued him this past season. To increase his pelvic stability and his hip and leg flexibility he is trying (you guessed it) PILATES!"I have a few things I want to put in place over the summer to make sure the problem improves. It is to do with my pelvis and I need to become more flexible, so I am thinking about taking up Pilates and there are other things which can help me."I know what needs to be done and I need some time away from football and I will get that in the summer, so hopefully I will come back stronger." Da Vinci's Health Hub- Yoga vs. Pilates
2008-02-07 06:02:00
Yoga vs. Pilates How do you like to exercise? Maybe you on a treadmill is tantamount to a hamster on a wheel, lifting weights has "never been your thing," and it's entirely too hot to exercise outside in the scorching summer sun. So what can one do for a sculpted body and flatter abs? It's time to stretch your perceptions of performance with two ways to workout that will not only strengthen your body, but also engage your mind. The fitness landscape is changing, and the change is toward a mind-body approach to exercise that keeps you interested longer. By emphasizing the mind-body connection, you can relax and relieve stress while increasing your flexibility, strength and balance. The two most popular forms of these types of exercise are yoga and Pilates. Yoga and Pilates both promote "mindful movement." While running or walking requires your movements to become automatic, often ?zoning out,? you have to keep your mind totally focused on what your body is doing when you practi...

Yoga vs Pilates: Which is better?
2008-01-06 03:55:00
by Deborah Harris It seems that these days you can hardly turn on a television without hearing someone mention Pilates or Yoga. Articles on Pilates and Yoga fill numerous magazines and it seems ?everyone who is anyone? is doing one or the other. Why all the excitement? What is so special about these techniques? What are the similarities and differences between Pilates and Yoga? Yoga, as we all know it, is aimed to unite the mind, the body, and the spirit. Yogis view that the mind and the body are one, and that if it is given the right tools and taken to the right environment, it can find harmony and heal itself. Yoga therefore is considered therapeutic. It helps you become more aware of your body’s posture, alignment and patterns of movement. It makes the body more flexible and helps you relax even in the midst of a stress stricken environment. This is one of the foremost reasons why people want to start practicing Yoga - to feel more fit, to be more energetic, be happier and ...

Look Your Best at the Beach or in Pilates Class by Sewing Your Own Swimsuit
2007-12-17 08:12:00
A wide range of pattern styles is available. Styles with princess seams are slenderizing. So are patterns with a center panel of a contrasting color; to minimize hips, use a dark color for the side panels. High-cut leg openings on swimsuits and leotards give the appearance of longer legs and a slimmer torso. For a full-busted figure, choose a pattern with a bustline shaped by darts or seams. To fill out a slender figure, use a pattern with shirring, draping, or ruffles. Or choose a simple pattern style and a splashy printed fabric to enhance a slender figure.By sewing your own swimsuits and leotards, you can make garments that meet your needs. Add a full-front lining to a swimsuit, if desired; this is especially important for light-colored and lightweight fabrics. Or you may line just the crotch area or add a bandeau lining in the bust area. Purchased bra cups may be sewn into the bandeau if firmer support is desired.Two-way stretch fabric stretches to fit the contours of many diffe...
