Pilgrimage to Sri Pada in Siam
2008-04-20 00:20:00 Pilgrimage to Sri Pada in Siam Gamage Karunasiri The envoys from Kandy were on a noble mission seeking assistance from Siamese King His Majesty Borommacot Dharmaraja II (1733-1759) for revival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka which was at a pathetic, declining phase and was in the verge of disappearing from the island due to lack of properly ordained monks to carry on the Buddhist order and doctrine for the benefit of future generations. The Buddhist institutions were deteriorated and discipline among the clergy was degenerated. Phra Buddhapada temple The Sri Lankan ambassadors were carrying an urgent message (Royal Sannasa) written in Pali language probably using the Cambodian script, sent by King Kirthi Sri Rajasinghe appealing for help from the fellow Buddhist ruler for revival of the esteemed common religion sacred to them. Both countries have past records of mutual help in perpetuation of Buddhism in their hours of need. There were five Sinhalese ambassadors in the d...

The Great Pilgrimage | where the lovers meet
2008-04-13 08:59:00 "... in this station he makes his final sajda at the door of the sacred mosque and from this sajda he does not lift up his head again because there is no head to lift up ..."In teaching the Great Pilgrimage (Al-Hajj Al-Akbar), sufi guide Sidi Muhammad al-Jamal ar-Rifai, may God be pleased with him, uses the legendary love story of Layla and Majnun to teach the inner realities.Following is an excerpt from his teaching:The Great Pilgrimage ? where the lovers meet at the door of the sacred mosque and reunite in the still center after turning and turning and turning around the throne of the Most High.Majnun meets Laila in the course of his journey around the holy house. She has always been with him, but only in this station, in the midst of his unveiling, does he realize her nearness and the intimacy of her discourse. The dialogue of love is the mystery of her revelation within him.As he circumambulates the reality and becomes more and more effaced in it, as one by one he surrenders the...
A Soul's Pilgrimage
2008-03-30 14:12:00 In Migene Gonzalez-Wippler's international bestseller, What Happens After Death, she gives scientific and personal evidence for survival of the soul. I enjoyed Kirkudian's [Astral Name] narrative of his existences in physicality. It seems to me that Kirkudian explains it best -On a Soul's PilgrimageA soul's pilgrimage represents the sum of incarnations through which that soul must journey for its purification. When this forced exile ends, the soul is offered a choice. It may remain in whatever level of the astral plane its evolutionary work has prepared it for or it may return to the material world of its choice as either a guide or protector of one of its inhabitants. In certain cases, the soul may choose to become the guide to the collective soul of a race. It may do so as valour, love, peace, faith, hope, compassion or any of the many virtues that help material beings overcome their baser instincts.A soul may always choose to accept or reject a mission when offered by it...

Holy Pilgrimage?
2008-03-01 11:30:00 It was close to that. We went to Grand Bassin today. Woke up early, bathed, dressed up, my mum prepared a picnic and we were there in one hour. Yeah! Ain't that awesome? So we reached Grand Bassin, had trouble to find a proper parking space. And minutes later we were praying down there at the edge of the lake. We completed all the rounds of deities and donations in less than one hour. While returning to the car I saw this wonderful purple flower and I could not resist. I managed to get one that has roots to it. Yeah holy pilgrimages are truly beneficial. But seriously, religions and religious festivals should not be taken too seriously as some people just might be taking advantage of that piety and god-fearing nature most people have. For instance I've noticed a serious seasonal inflation regarding the price of bananas, coconuts etc... Basically all those fruits and provisions usually used during this period of time.Plus they were actually selling bael leaves at the entrance of the...

Haj Pilgrimage in 1953 - Rare Pictures
2008-01-16 00:20:00 The pilgrimage is associated with the life of Muhammad, but the ritual of the Hajj itself was considered ancient even during his lifetime in the 7th century. Many Muslims believe that it goes back to the time of Abraham in 2000 BC. Pilgrims would join processions of tens of thousands of people, who would simultaneously converge on Mecca for the week of the Hajj, and perform a series of rituals. Each person would walk counter-clockwise seven times about the Kaaba, the cubical building towards which all Muslims pray, kiss the sacred Black Stone on its corner, run back and forth between the hills of Al-Safa and Al-Marwah, drink from the Zamzam Well, go to the plains of Mount Arafat to stand in vigil, then proceed to Muzdalifah to gather pebbles, which they would throw at a rock in Mina to perform the ritual of the Stoning of the Devil. The pilgrims would then shave their heads, perform an animal sacrifice, and celebrate the three day global festival of Eid ul-Adha. via:wikipedia

88 Temple Pilgrimage - Kyoto
2008-01-04 09:19:00 ????????Japan's most famous pilgrimage route is on the southern island of Shikoku. The 1,200 km route consists of 88 shrines, and is thus called "The 88 Temple Pilgrimage."Many of the temples along the route were founded by Kukai, the monk and scholar better known as Kobo Daishi.Today's pilgrim is more likely to do the Shikoku route in his own car, or a tour bus. Some however still don the white jackets of the pilgrim and walk it. Walking the route takes roughly two months to complete, and many of the temples offer low-priced accommodation. There are however other less arduous pilgrimage routes. Among them is "Hachi-ju Haka-sho" (88 Temple Pilgrimage), a short hike in the hills behind Ninnaji Temple that is modeled on the Shikoku route. Located in northwest Kyoto, Ninnaji is a World Heritage Site and is well worth a visit, but for locals the mountains behind it are perhaps even more inviting. In imitation of the more famous route in Shikoku, there are 88 mini-temples. These temples ...
Hajj - The Pilgrimage.
2007-12-24 18:33:00 Hajj - The Pilgrimage.About more than 2 million Muslims from various countries visited the holy city of Mecca to make the spiritual pilgrimage known as The Hajj this year. (Image credit: Fishki). The Hajj that is pilgrimage to Mecca (Makkah), is the largest annual pilgrimage in the world. It is the fifth pillar of Islam, an obligation that must be carried out at least once in their lifetime by every able-bodied Muslim who can afford to do so. It is a demonstration of the solidarity of the Muslim people, and their submission to God. The pilgrimage occurs from the 8th to the 12th day of Dhul Hijjah, the 12th month of the Islamic calendar. Because the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, the event cannot be pegged to the Gregorian calendar, whose (solar) year is eleven days longer. In 2007, Hajj took place from December 17 to December 21.Other Posts:Rock Balancing.A Symphony Of Lights.Creative Business Cards.Print Ads Using Illusions.Outdoor Advertising: Signboards & Billboards.

The Spiritual Hajj of the Heart | the esoteric dimensions of the pilgrimage
2007-12-06 08:35:00 It is known that physical worship is an imitation of what is real, and the Hajj is no exception. The reality of worship is completely different for one who has attained a higher level of understanding and sincerity compared to the common individual, and it is for this reason that Prophet Muhammad said that although two individuals may pray beside one another and superficially appear not unlike one another, yet the difference between their prayers is as the difference between the heavens and the earth. The reality of worship is known to the soul, and he who is close, or in union as Awliya are, to his soul will find infinitely greater depth in his worship. All souls are by divine will in a state of Islam and in perfect surrender to the Lord of Heavens. Thus the closer one moves towards himself, his true self, the closer he or she will come towards the identity of ?Abdullah,? an honored servant of the Divine. The journey towards Oneself is but the journey from the superficial world of il...

The Ancestor's Tale: A Pilgrimage to the Dawn of Evolution by Richard Dawki
2007-09-17 01:24:00 Richard Dawkins,"The Ancestor's Tale: A Pilgrimage to the Dawn of Evolution"?????????Mariner Books | ISBN:061861916X | PDF | 510 Pages | 30,1 MbJust as we trace our personal family trees from parents to grandparents and so on back in time, so in The Ancestor's Tale Richard Dawkins traces the ancestry of life. As he is at pains to point out, this is very much our human tale, our ancestry. Surprisingly, it is one that many otherwise literate people are largely unaware of. Hopefully Dawkins's name and well deserved reputation as a best selling writer will introduce them to this wonderful saga. The Ancestor's Tale takes us from our immediate human ancestors back through what he calls ?concestors,? those shared with the apes, monkeys and other mammals and other vertebrates and beyond to the dim and distant microbial beginnings of life some 4 billion years ago. It is a remarkable story which is still very much in the process of being uncovered. And, of course from a scientist of Dawkin...

The Tragedy of the Polish Pilgrimage
2007-07-25 23:30:00 In How could God allow 26 pilgrims to die in a crash?, Christopher Jamison, the Abbot of Worth and author of Finding Sanctuary: Monastic Steps for Everyday Life, discusses the recent tragedy of the coach crash in France which killed 26 Polish pilgrims who had just come from La Salette."For the 26 Polish pilgrims killed so tragically in a coach crash in France on their way home, the two moments unexpectedly became the same moment. The knowledge that they had been visiting the shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary at La Salette only underlined the poignancy of this sudden, unmerited death. They will have recited the Hail Mary many times on their pilgrimage and maybe they were reciting it at the moment their coach crashed through the safety barriers; perhaps its concluding phrase was on their lips in their final agony: ?Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.? The image of good and devout people saying that prayer just before they died will be a co...
News & Current Events :: Christian Pilgrimage Holds Strong in Islamic Iran
2007-07-25 13:29:00 Author: Eric Subject: Christian Pilgrimage Holds Strong in Islamic IranPosted: Wed Jul 25, 2007 7:29 am (GMT -4) Christian Pilgrimage Holds Strong in Islamic Iran Stuart Williams CHALDORAN, Iran -- The tents of thousands of pilgrims dot the hillside, the air is heavy with the scent of incense, and the sounds of the church bell toll across the valley. This is the Armenian Christian pilgrimage marking the feast of the 1st century missionary St. Thaddeus, deep in the northwestern mountains of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Every summer for the past half-century, thousands of Armenian pilgrims from Iran and beyond have descended on the remote Qareh Kelisa (black church) for three days of worship and relaxation with fellow Armenians. It may seem remarkable that such a tradition holds strong in one of the world's most strictly Islamic countries, but Iran is home to hundreds of thousands of Armenians and a string of historically important churches. "This is a gat...
Pilgrimage (Hajj)
2007-07-24 12:44:00 Once a year Muslims around the world go to Makkah (Saudi Arabia) to perform Hajj (Pilgrimage) during 9~11th day of Islamic month of Zil-Hajj. In old times people do travel from many locations around the world on foot or on animal back. As the means of travel improved people start to avail ships and after some time air-planes to reach Makkah. This year more than 159,000 people from Pakistan only shall travel to Makkah, mostly by Pakistan International Airline (PIA). This year PIA has increased the Hajj fare (may be it increases every year or so) stating that PIA is in loss. Even in India Muslim are offered much support for the Pilgrimage. Rather than giving support to Hajjis PIA try to earn from them on increased rates each year. The reason they tell that our planes return without any passenger on board from Saudi Arabia, so they have to cover extra fuel cost. Increased Umrah fares is not understandable. This situation is like a rickshaw, which carry passenger throughout the day on or...
What Is A Pilgrimage?
2007-07-17 07:52:00 Many time we make few steps to back or forward we may take steps to the left or sometime to the right, But when we plan for pilgrimage we are making steps towards god .We got to god with lusts of problems, sickness faith doubts crisis and we ask for favors."Pilgrimage means focusing on an intention, focusing on a desire, or focusing on resolution of a situation.â€History of a Pilgrimage:A Pilgrimage is a personal invitation from God it is differs from a tour in several important ways. It comprised of god offer and depends upon your acceptance. God's call many ways but the purpose remains consistent: It is an individual summons to know God more fully. it is a spiritual journey for spiritual purpose. and an opportunity to get closer to God.Definition of a pilgrimage is "A long journey or search, especially one of exalted purpose or moral significance." So, a religious pilgrimage is generally a long, arduous journey. Hardly the kinds of leisure modern people tend to seek when vacatio...
Thinking About: Shrines & Pilgrimage
2007-07-15 13:46:00 Living in Europe you can?t stumble for falling into a church, and many contain the shrines and relics of the saints. When I lived in the States there were a few shrines but these were scattered far and wide and you had often had to plan well in advance to see them. This past month I was in Paris, Rome, Vienna, and Brussels; in each place I either sought out or fell into a shrine or reliquary, and it got me thinking about relics, pilgrimage, and context. While visiting the shrine of St. Peter in Rome I was struck by the sense of sterility it presented the visitor; behind a protective glass wall, almost two metres away from me I found myself disappointed ? this after all was a designed to be touched, to be seen up close, experienced. I felt very much the visitor to a museum or exhibition. There is something in visiting a shrine that urges the tactile experience, sensuality even. The experience is somehow incomplete otherwise.Standing briefly before St. Peter?s shrine silent, sparkling ...

Pilgrimages
2007-06-28 06:41:00 Pilgrims contributed an important element to long-distance trade before the modern era, and brought prosperity to successful pilgrimage sites, an economic phenomenon unequalled until the tourist trade of the 20th century. Encouraging pilgrims was a motivation for assembling (and sometimes fabricating) relics and for writing hagiographies of local saints, filled with inspiring accounts of miracle cures. Lourdes and other modern pilgrimage sites keep this spirit alive.Until recent centuries, pilgrimage has been a fairly difficult and arduous adventure. But now, Jews from many countries make periodic pilgrimages to the holy sites of their religion. The western retaining wall of the original temple, known as the Wailing Wall, or Western Wall remains in the Old City of Jerusalem and this has been the most sacred site for Zionist Jews. Pilgrimage to this area was off-limits from 1948 to 1967, when East Jerusalem was controlled by Jordan.World Youth Day is a major Catholic Pilgrimage, spec...

About Protestant Pilgrimages
2007-05-15 08:40:00 Evangelicals go essentially to visit the sites of biblical significance on what are primarily educational tours. These in themselves will only perpetuate and reinforce a pietistic faith rooted in the 1st Century, without addressing either the present Middle East conflict or necessarily engaging in theological praxis. The presence of an ancient and Oriental Christianity is either ignored, misunderstood or even criticized for desecrating the archaeological sites with what are often regarded as pagan shrines.Fundamentalist pilgrims visit the Holy Land for similar reasons but with the added schatological dimension, believing themselves to be witnessing and indeed participating in the purposes of God, at work within Israel in these 'Last Days'. They believe they have a divine mandate to support the state of Israel. The third, most recent and smallest category of pilgrimage to emerge is associated with the term 'Living Stones'. These pilgrimages in contradistinction seek to counter the...
Vidya Balan undertakes a pilgrimage
2007-05-08 06:53:00 Vidya Balan recently undertook a pilgrimage and visited a famed dargah and temple in Rajasthan.Covered under a veil, the Parineeta girl visited Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti's dargah in Ajmer."Vidya Balan reached the shrine by a BMW car in the afternoon and spent over an hour in the shrine. She offered flowers and tied "wish threads", said a dargah committee member. But no one could recognise her due to the veil over her face.Vidya then drove straight to the Brahma temple in Pushkar. "Dressed in an orange suit, she came here in the evening and spent about 20 minutes in the temple", a priest said. Vidya also had a scuffle with photographers when she requested them not to click her pictures. Vidya has been camping in Jaipur for the last few days to shoot for Priyadarshan 's comedy thriller Bhool Bhulaiya . Vidya plays a Kathak dancer in the film who suffers from a split personality. The movie is a remake of Malayalam blockbuster ?Manichitrathazhu?.
Tai Shan pilgrimage
2007-05-07 04:57:00 Qingdao, Shandong, P.R. China5.07.2007It is said that all Chinese want to climb Mount Tai Shan at some point in their lives. It is the holiest of the five sacred Taoist peaks and is, therefore, the most climbed mountain in the world. So Mira and I figured that we would add our footprints to the old upward path.We were riding into town on the train from Shanghai and knew that we were getting close to our destination of Tai Shan. But we look out the windows and saw nothing but flat agricultural land and not much else. Where was this long sought towering peak? We look out all of the train windows that we could from our booths in the dining car. I saw a little hill. "Is that little hill it?" "No!," Mira retorted, "it is the big frigging mountain behind the hill!" I have eyes but could not see Mount Tai Shan right before me! There it was, Tai Shan rising out of the fertile flatlands. Our train halted and we jumped out, ready to climb. So we found a cheap inn and threw down our rucksacks a...
