Pinot Gris

Goose on the Loose
2008-04-18 19:25:00
The wine for the night was a 2007 Toulouse Pinot Gris. We picked this bottle up on our recent trip to California at the winery. It cost us $22 (minus a discount, though I can't recall what that was now), had a real cork closure and clocked in at 14.3% alcohol by volume. I owe you a post on our visit to Toulouse (where they have the most adorable little new puppy, though a solid white fluffy dog on a winery seems like it will get really dirty!) so watch out on that soon. Also, since our visit to Toulouse I noticed in the most recent Food & Wine magazine that they chose Toulouse's Pinot Noir as on of the best Pinots! The wine showed peach, pear, tropical fruit, and honey on the nose. Overall I got a very tropical feeling from the nose, though I couldn't pin point the exact kind of fruit. In the mouth I got pear all the way through the mouth, though a touch of honey and some citrus showed on the back of the palate.Overall, the wine was crisp, refreshing, and had great acidi...
Alma Rosa Winery and Vineyards wine tasting
2008-02-02 22:36:00
Spending the weekend in Santa Barbara I decided to go to the Alma Rosa wine tasting at East Beach Wine Company last night. Stepping into the shop the place was packed and it took a minute before we reached the counter and could pay for two tastings and get our glasses. To our delight the owners, Thekla and Richard Sanford was there themselves, with their daughter Blakeney, to pour and talk to the customers. Nothing beats the opportunity to talk to either the owners or wine maker as you taste a winery's wine. Both Thekla and Richard where very nice and pleasant, and spent quite a bit of time with us. It was a true pleasure to talk to them, and you could tell how passionate and excited they are about their wines.A short bio: Richard Sanford was the first to plant Pinot Noir in Santa Rita Hills in 1970. 1981 him and Thekla started Sanford Winery, and after parting with it in 2005, they founded Alma Rosa Winery and Vineyards at the location of their old winery. All grapes are grown org...
2006 ANNE AMIE PINOT GRIS
2008-01-31 02:39:00
I've got a new favorite girl and her name is Anne Amie! My true #1 picked this up recently, paying a little more than I normally do, $17.99, but we're finding it harder and harder to find decent wine, at least Pinot Gris, less than $15.00 a bottle. This wine, lovingly made evidently, in Carlton, Oregon, has a smokey gold appearance in the glass that I don't think I've seen before. A huge bouquet of fruit was evidenced on the nose which was followed up by just a wonderful, great experience of flavor dancing in the mouth and on the palate. Velvety smooth finish made every drop of this wine enjoyable. And I mean EVERY DROP! I easily gave this one 5 Corkscrews and am pleading with anyone who reads this to find a bottle and try. I promise you will not be disappointed and it will be money well spent. Sit Long, Talk Much, Laugh Often, Find Anne Amie Pinot Gris somewhere!

2005 CONCANNON PINOT GRIS
2007-09-05 04:53:00
Monday, September 3, Little Rock, AR Ahh Labor Day! A day spent meeting with the DirectTV guy to upgrade my receiver, for about the fourth time in two years, and then a trip to a nearby water park where evidently they were having an "Everyone overweight by 100 pounds or more gets in free" day, no we had to pay, to the discovery of today's reviewed wine. On our way home with the kids from the fat farm, they didn't qualify for free admission either, we stopped by this little hole-in-the-wall wine/liquor store that we seldom frequent. I went in looking for a bottle or two of some type of white wine and ended up grabbing a 2005 Concannon Central Coast Limited Release Pinot Gris that was selling for about $10.99/bottle. I also picked up a Pinot Grigio at the same time which caused an intellectual discussion between #1 and myself to break out. What is the difference between Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio? I'm sure many of you have asked the same question and hopefully I can give you...

Elk Cove Vineyards 2006 Willamette Valley Pinot Gris
2007-05-22 04:38:00
Tonight I am revisiting a favorite from last year, the Elk Cove Pinot Gris, but this time the new vintage, 2006.Elk Cove Vineyards was founded in 1974 by Pat and Joe Campbell, and to this day it remains family owned and operated. In 1995 Adam Godlee Campbell joined the team as the winemaker. All the fruit is estate grown, the estate being 350 acres, 120 of the dedicated to vineyards. They use gravity flow and gentle handling to intervene to a minimum, to let the grape express itself in the wine. The 2006 Willamette Valley Pinot Gris was whole cluster pressed, cold fermented in stainless steel tanks, and did not go through malolactic fermentation. It has a clear, very pale, straw color, with perhaps a hint of green, in the glass. On the nose white, sweet floral with citrus and a touch of tropical fruit. The first impression on the palate is that of medium viscosity and sweet, soft creaminess. As that subsides fresh citrus with great acidity kicks through and gives this wine a great refr...
