Sangria recipe: The secret to a perfect pitcher
2009-08-12 02:10:00
(Tribune file photo)By Alpana SinghI'll be the first to admit there are times the weather is just too hot and humid to enjoy a traditional glass of wine. During the dog days of summer when the mercury rises to uncomfortable levels, I want something cold, fruity and refreshing. Nothing fits the bill better than a festive pitcher of sangria. There is no perfect recipe for sangria. It is typically made from red wine, fruit juices, soda water, chunks of fruit, brandy or rum (sometimes), and spices such as cinnamon. A white version--or sangria blanco--also can be made using a light bodied white wine that has not been aged in oak barrels. You also can make sparkling sangria using Spanish cava...

Roy Halladay is Baseball?s Most Efficient Pitcher
2009-02-26 10:34:00
Roy Halladay is Baseball’s Most Efficient Pitcher I’ll be honest with you. Due to my disappointment with the Blue Jays lack of off-season activity I was originally going to write a “save Doc for 2010″, with my supporting proof namely being Roy Halladay’s high number of innings pitched over the past three seasons (220, 225, 246). ...

2008-12-29 06:07:00
I was about to head to sleep, but Ian from Sox and Dawgs sent me an email via a report from Roch Kubatko on MASNSports.com that the Orioles have come close to an agreement with hurler Mark Hendrickson. Here's a bit more from the Orioles.com Spencer Fordin about the pitcher. From the Orioles.com: The report said that any deal would be pending a physical examination and that an announcement could come early in the week. Hendrickson's agent told the Baltimore Sun last week that there was interest between the two sides, and the Orioles have consistently said they need to add multiple pitchers this offseason.>>> Read MoreBet on Baseball at BetUS.com - America's favorite sports betting destination for all sports fans; adding more excitement and bonuses than any other sportsbook; on the web.

Lincecum Voted NL Pitcher of The Year
2008-10-27 21:30:00
With the World Series in full swing, and the baseball world outside of Tampa and Philadelphia extremely quiet, one Giant made news over the last week. Tim Lincecum is still waiting for the big announcement coming November 8th regarding the NL CY Young, but he already has the endorsement of his peers. Lincecum was named NL Pitcher of the Year last week, an award that is voted on by the players and coaches. He also garnered The Sporting News' honors for the same award. Arizona's Brandon Webb did finish the year with 22 wins for a team that finished 2 games over .500 while Lincecum won 18 with a team that finished 18 games below the .500 mark. Not trying to take anything away from Webb, he's one of the top 5 pitchers in the NL and had a great season, but Lincecum outpitched Webb in every single category this season besides in the win department. I've made my claim for Lincecum deserving this award many times over the last month or so and I won't keep beating the subject anymore un...
Lester AL Pitcher Of The Month...Drew, Lowell Might Play In Anaheim
2008-09-30 11:42:00
Jon Lester was named American League Pitcher of the Month (Sept.) for the second time this year. In September, he was 4-1 with a sparkling ERA of 2.17. He struck out 28 and walked 14. And the buzz around Boston and all of Red Sox Nation is one of hope and eternal faith. As for Josh Beckett, no news is good news, I guess. He will throw on the sidelines Thursday in preparation for his Sunday Fenway Park start. I have a funny feeling that he'll be fine and the Sox will have split the first two games in California, winning game one and falling short in game two. But, as Bruce (the Boss, who is playing the Super Bowl halftime show-WITH the E Street Band. How great is that?) would say..."living in the future and none of this has happened yet." Here are a couple comments about Josh, Daisuke and Jon..."We love what Beckett can do and we respect what Beckett can do," Francona said Monday. "We're starting to get that feeling about Lester.""You want Josh Beckett to go for you," Kevin Youkili...

The Starting Pitcher Market
2008-06-04 12:47:00
Almost every team needs starting pitching.  Let's take a look at who's out there. Bronson Arroyo, Reds.  If Walt Jocketty starts selling off his veterans, he'll have to listen on Arroyo.  The innings-eating 31 year-old is signed through 2010. Derek Lowe, Dodgers.  Lowe seems to have righted the ship after a five-start stumble.  He'll be a free agent after the season, but I can't see Ned Colletti moving Lowe unless the Dodgers fall out of contention. Joe Blanton, A's.  Like Arroyo, a hittable innings eater.  Also like Arroyo, he's under team control through 2010.  Livan Hernandez, Twins.  The Twins may want to keep Livan, since they are in the thick of the AL Central race.  You may recall they did not elect to trade Carlos Silva last year. A.J. Burnett, Blue Jays.  His name comes up in trade rumors because of an opt out clause.  If he thinks he can top a two-year, $24MM deal, Burnett will probably elect free agency a...
More on pitcher fatigue

A few weeks ago, I started to take a look at the 100 pitch limit on starting pitchers or more to the point, pitcher fatigue more generally. I was able to model a set of regression equations that predicted what an average hitter would look like against an average pitcher at different pitch counts. Sure ...

Pitcher with coldpack.
2008-05-23 13:14:00
Now that summer finally seems to be coming along, maybe it would be just about time to introduce this pitcher with its crushed ice cooling compartment. You will agree, we are sure, that keeping the ice in its own compartment is preferable to pouring it into the drink itself. There it would dilute your lemonade or your ice tea or your sangria or whatever you prefer to drink on the porch on a hot day. USD 45:-.
Cardinals Eyeing College Pitcher With 13th Pick
2008-05-20 15:43:00
The Cardinals have the 13th pick in the June draft.  The team's VP of scouting and player development, Jeff Luhnow, says "there's a real possibility that we go college pitcher."  MLB.com's Matthew Leach admits that Aaron Crow will probably be gone.  Ditto Brian Matusz.  Christian Friedrich or Shooter Hunt remain possibilities. Leach also suggests the Cardinals could take one of the many first baseman and move him to the outfield (Yonder Alonso, for example).  Baseball America's May 16th mock draft projects the Cards will take Zach Collier, a high school outfielder.

D-Backs Pitcher Micah Owings Is Looking To Go Deep!!!
2008-05-19 20:00:00
05/20/08 POINTSHAVERS.COM - The Arizona DiamondBacks pitching staff has really taken on a personality all of its own. Leading the way is ace pitcher slash homerun king Micah Owings. This year, Owings (5-1 W-L, 3.91 ERA) has pitched very well; but the really cool part about Micah's game is his uncanny ability to hit homeruns as a starting pitcher in the National League. So far, so good. Owings is batting .357 (10-for-28) with one homer. It is not uncommon to see pitchers hit the ball well in the National League. However, what makes Owings so special is that he has been occasionally used in a pinch hitting situations for the D-Backs. Not many managers have this much confidence in their pitcher's hitting ability -- the only other example that comes to mind is Carlos Zambrano of the Chicago Cubs.Owings will be taking the mound tomorrow against Mark Hendrickson (5-2 W-L, 3.91 ERA) and the first place Florida Marlins. That's right, the Marlins are currently in first place in th...
Rangers Leaning Toward College Pitcher In Draft
2008-05-19 11:45:00
According to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com, the Rangers "would love to take a high upside college pitcher who could shoot through the system" with their 11th overall pick this June.  Sullivan suggests Shooter Hunt, Tanner Scheppers, and Christian Friedrich as possibilities.  Scheppers may be out of the picture given the stress fracture of his shoulder. ESPN's Keith Law ranked his top 60 for the draft on May 10th, and he considered the top college pitchers to be Aaron Crow, Brian Matusz, Scheppers, Friedrich, Josh Fields, and Hunt.  In their May 16th mock draft, Baseball America picked high school first baseman Eric Hosmer for Texas. By the way, check out the June Amateur Draft link.  This will remain on the sidebar until after the June 5th draft takes place.
