Pitcher fatigue, batted balls, and DIPS
2008-06-10 07:18:00
Are you tired, Mr. Starter? I’ve been asking this question of my magic spreadsheet for a while now, and last week, during my look at fatigue factors like pitch count, days of rest, mileage on the arm for the season, and number of times through the lineup, I promised a follow up study on how ...

The Starting Pitcher Market
2008-06-04 12:47:00
Almost every team needs starting pitching.  Let's take a look at who's out there. Bronson Arroyo, Reds.  If Walt Jocketty starts selling off his veterans, he'll have to listen on Arroyo.  The innings-eating 31 year-old is signed through 2010. Derek Lowe, Dodgers.  Lowe seems to have righted the ship after a five-start stumble.  He'll be a free agent after the season, but I can't see Ned Colletti moving Lowe unless the Dodgers fall out of contention. Joe Blanton, A's.  Like Arroyo, a hittable innings eater.  Also like Arroyo, he's under team control through 2010.  Livan Hernandez, Twins.  The Twins may want to keep Livan, since they are in the thick of the AL Central race.  You may recall they did not elect to trade Carlos Silva last year. A.J. Burnett, Blue Jays.  His name comes up in trade rumors because of an opt out clause.  If he thinks he can top a two-year, $24MM deal, Burnett will probably elect free agency a...
More on pitcher fatigue
2008-06-03 07:17:00
A few weeks ago, I started to take a look at the 100 pitch limit on starting pitchers or more to the point, pitcher fatigue more generally. I was able to model a set of regression equations that predicted what an average hitter would look like against an average pitcher at different pitch counts. Sure ...

Pitcher with coldpack.
2008-05-23 13:14:00
Now that summer finally seems to be coming along, maybe it would be just about time to introduce this pitcher with its crushed ice cooling compartment. You will agree, we are sure, that keeping the ice in its own compartment is preferable to pouring it into the drink itself. There it would dilute your lemonade or your ice tea or your sangria or whatever you prefer to drink on the porch on a hot day. USD 45:-.
Cardinals Eyeing College Pitcher With 13th Pick
2008-05-20 15:43:00
The Cardinals have the 13th pick in the June draft.  The team's VP of scouting and player development, Jeff Luhnow, says "there's a real possibility that we go college pitcher."  MLB.com's Matthew Leach admits that Aaron Crow will probably be gone.  Ditto Brian Matusz.  Christian Friedrich or Shooter Hunt remain possibilities. Leach also suggests the Cardinals could take one of the many first baseman and move him to the outfield (Yonder Alonso, for example).  Baseball America's May 16th mock draft projects the Cards will take Zach Collier, a high school outfielder.

D-Backs Pitcher Micah Owings Is Looking To Go Deep!!!
2008-05-19 20:00:00
05/20/08 POINTSHAVERS.COM - The Arizona DiamondBacks pitching staff has really taken on a personality all of its own. Leading the way is ace pitcher slash homerun king Micah Owings. This year, Owings (5-1 W-L, 3.91 ERA) has pitched very well; but the really cool part about Micah's game is his uncanny ability to hit homeruns as a starting pitcher in the National League. So far, so good. Owings is batting .357 (10-for-28) with one homer. It is not uncommon to see pitchers hit the ball well in the National League. However, what makes Owings so special is that he has been occasionally used in a pinch hitting situations for the D-Backs. Not many managers have this much confidence in their pitcher's hitting ability -- the only other example that comes to mind is Carlos Zambrano of the Chicago Cubs.Owings will be taking the mound tomorrow against Mark Hendrickson (5-2 W-L, 3.91 ERA) and the first place Florida Marlins. That's right, the Marlins are currently in first place in th...
Rangers Leaning Toward College Pitcher In Draft
2008-05-19 11:45:00
According to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com, the Rangers "would love to take a high upside college pitcher who could shoot through the system" with their 11th overall pick this June.  Sullivan suggests Shooter Hunt, Tanner Scheppers, and Christian Friedrich as possibilities.  Scheppers may be out of the picture given the stress fracture of his shoulder. ESPN's Keith Law ranked his top 60 for the draft on May 10th, and he considered the top college pitchers to be Aaron Crow, Brian Matusz, Scheppers, Friedrich, Josh Fields, and Hunt.  In their May 16th mock draft, Baseball America picked high school first baseman Eric Hosmer for Texas. By the way, check out the June Amateur Draft link.  This will remain on the sidebar until after the June 5th draft takes place.

Keeping a Rookie Pitcher Grounded
2008-04-28 20:00:00
Ignore the shiny 1.50 ERA that Boston rookie Justin Masterson has after just one major league start. ERAs are overrated at the best of times. The most important numbers on Masterson’s April 24 line against the Angels were the two hits allowed in six innings and the 11-3 ground outs to fly outs. Thanks to ...

I need two CCs of a rebounding pitcher, stat!
2008-04-23 00:29:00
C.C. tied his career tonight with 11 strikeouts (in only five innings!). I've got to think with a pitch count in the low 100s, we've seen the last of him. A sparkling 1.00 WHIP and no earned runs round out a Cy Young award-winner caliber start (lot of adjectives, there).I acquired him, and ended up trading him -- after this start, thankfully -- for Mariano Rivera. I'm regretting it a bit, but that's how trades work. I needed the saves and Ks from an RP more so than the chance of a Sabathia rebound. For you Sabathia owners, hope you stuck with him. This must be a balm to your savaged nerves.
The foul ball, part two: What does it tell us about a pitcher?
2008-04-22 06:24:00
Last week, I took a look at what a foul ball tells us about a batter. In general, we saw that what type of foul balls a batter hit (whether they were two-strike spoilers or they were basically really long strikes) may have provided a bit of a diagnostic to his mindset at the plate, ...

Pitcher batting No.8? LaRussa, Yost like it for different reasons
2008-04-21 15:23:00
Now St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa is determined to go the entire season with another scheme, hitting his St. Louis starting pitchers eighth instead of ninth. His No. 9 hitter is a "second leadoff hitter," another possible man on base for run-producer Albert Pujols, the third hitter who'd become, in effect, the cleanup man the second time through the order. La Russa sometimes used the strategy in the Mark McGwire days. He did it again the final 56 games last season and noticed a slight offensive improvement — 4.63 runs to 4.39 — and he's seeing it through in 2008.Milwaukee Brewers manager Ned Yost also is hitting his pitcher eighth, for a different reason. He uses catcher Jason Kendall, who has a tendency to hit into double plays, at No. 9 - making it possible for Kendall to lead off an inning (if the pitcher made the final out the previous inning) or bat with a runner at second base (if the pitcher sacrificed).
