Capitals not looking to unload Mike Knuble

Pittsburgh Penguins Win 2009 NHL Stanley Cup
2009-06-13 04:54:00
The Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 on Friday night to win NHL’s Lord Stanley Cup in seven games. Max Talbot scored both goals for the Penguins in the second period.  The score was 2-0 before Detroit scored in the final period to make it 2-1 on a goal by Jonathan Ericsson. Marc-Andre Fleur was ...

Penguins-Hurricanes Storylines
2009-05-15 13:50:00
Now that the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Washington Capitals, we can all focus on the Eastern conference final between the Pens and the Carolina Hurricanes, who defeated the Boston Bruins in a tremendous game seven Thursday night. For those of you seeking storylines for the series, let me be of assistance of what you may (or may not) hear from sportscasters and writers over the next week.- Eric Staal and Jordan Staal are brothers. I feel like you should hear this from me since the announcers will fail to mention this. - Although Tuomo Ruutu is the brother of former Penguin Jarkko Ruutu, Pirate great Turner Ward is not related to Carolina's goalie Cam Ward.- Scott Walker, who scored the series winning goal against Boston, is not a Texas Ranger even though he may think he is after punching out the Bruins? Aaron Ward.- Sergei Samsonov and Simeon Varlamov are not the same person.- It's time for Bill Cowher to decide whether he supports the Penguins or the Canes. - Cam Ward an...
Unleash the Fleury
2009-05-14 13:50:00
Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury made a huge save on an Alexander Ovechkin breakaway just three minutes into Wednesday night's game seven. Arguably, that could have been the play of the game. Of course, most folks will talk and write about Crosby?s two goals and the fact that the Penguins scored twice in eight seconds culminating with Craig Adams? first ever playoff goal. However, if Ovechkin scores there, the whole complexion of the game is different.Since I live in the DC area and have had to listen to constant Capitals coverage and taunts by several co-workers after game six, I do want to point out that the Capitals had only 12 shots and 6 scoring chances in the first two periods. Way to show up for a game seven!Meanwhile, the Capitals talk around the area over the next few days will likely focus on what happened to Mike Green. Although Green had four assists in this series, he was not the same amazing player as he was during the regular season where he led all def...
All I Want For My Birthday
2009-05-13 14:50:00
is a Pittsburgh Penguins victory over the Washington Capitals tonight. That?s not asking for too much, is it?To celebrate my birthday, we made 6:30 dinner reservations tonight at a nice restaurant that just opened recently. Since the Capitals won game six, we?re now planning on arriving much closer to 5:30 since the hockey game starts at 7. Therefore, I want to publicly thank my wife for planning a nice evening and apologize to her since I?ll probably watch the clock throughout dinner to ensure that I?m home for the opening face-off. Is that wrong of me? Photo from Sportsecyclopeida.

Dear Philadelphia Flyers Fans,
2009-04-26 15:00:00
Enjoy chanting "Crosby sucks" while mowing the lawn, hitting golf balls or on your way to work on Monday since you?re not going to have the chance to do so at the Wachovia Center again during the 2009 Stanley Cup playoffs. However, you may have a good point. Perhaps Sidney Crosby does suck. I mean he only had two goals on Saturday and a total of 4 goals and 4 assists in the series. Of course, those eight points would be three more than any other Flyer (Mike Richards and Claude Giroux led the team with 5 points) in the six-game series. Actually, I?ll let Crosby, the recipient of all of the taunting, speak for himself:"We've had huge rivalries over the years. It's a loud building. They were playing well and the crowd was into to it, so to hear a little silence was gratifying."So what?s the excuse as to why the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Flyers this season? Simon Gagne, Kimmo Timonen and Braydon Coburn were injured during last year?s playoff series, but they looked health...
Penguins v Capitals: Battle of the Car Commercials
2009-03-10 14:36:00
While the Penguins defeated the Capitals on Sunday courtesy of a Sidney Crosby shoot-out goal, there also appears to be a battle between the two teams off the ice. Dan Steinberg's Sports Bog featured this video of Alexander Ovechkin singing the Eastern Motors song:I'll take Max Talbot for the block. If nothing else, this should at least make you smile on a Tuesday.
Penguins Should Acquire Stillman and Nash
2009-03-03 15:42:00
The National Hockey League?s trade deadline is tomorrow (Wednesday) at 3:00pm Eastern Time. The Pens have already traded Ryan Whitney to the Anaheim Ducks for Chris Kunitz and prospect Eric Tangradi. I encourage you to read Empty Netters, The Pens Blog and the other Penguins blogs for analysis of this trade if you haven't done so already. Meanwhile, I have a few ideas of what else the Pittsburgh Penguins should do.1. Acquire LW Cory Stillman. Stillman, currently a member of the Florida Panthers, is the type of veteran with Stanley Cup experience that the Pens could use. Stillman won Stanley Cups with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2003-2004 and Carolina Hurricanes in 2005-2006 where he had 26 points in 25 playoff games. Stillman has scored 20+ goals in 9 of the past 11 seasons and although he only has 12 goals this season and is currently injured, he has been a key part of the Panthers? resurgence. When he gets healthy, Stillman would be great for the Pens down the stretch.2. Ac...
Dear Margo Is Wrong
2008-12-15 19:20:00
Did you know that Yahoo has an advice columnist? Me neither. Did you know that said columnist is the daughter of Ann Landers? The better question is did you know that Ann Landers has a daughter and that she is following in her mother?s footsteps?Anyway, take a look at this December 12, 2008 Dear Margo column:DEAR MARGO: I have been dating a guy for two years, and when we met, everything was perfection. We have had ups and downs, of course, but I feel there's one thing that is always putting a strain on our life: My boyfriend is totally obsessed with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Everything he does revolves around them, from the clothes he wears each day (always a Penguins hat and/or shirt) to the car he drives (his license plate boasts the name of his favorite player) to his room, which is covered floor to ceiling with 8 by 10 pictures, jerseys in cases, pucks, sticks, game-used skates and hockey cards. He needs to go to all the home games (42-plus over eight months), and he goes alo...
Random Ramblings
2008-12-10 15:20:00
I read the Express nearly cover-to-cover everyday during my daily commute. In yesterday?s Fit section, I spotted an advertisement for Derrick Inglut Personal Training. If you look at the picture in the Express, on the front page of his website or below, it appears that Inglut has no chest hair except from his belly button down to his underwear. I?m certainly no expert on this, but it seems like there should be a rule that you either have all of your chest hair or none. By the way, who the hell walks down the street and pulls up his shirt for the camera?Have you noticed the significant number of football players wearing just their short-sleeve jerseys during cold-weather games? The temperature during Sunday?s Steelers-Cowboys game was in the teens or low twenties, but it seemed like only a few players wore long-sleeve Under Armor style shirts under the jersey. We already know that they?re tough. Does this make them look tougher? More and more, I seem to type Sena instead of S...
More Random Ramblings
2008-11-13 16:17:00
I was the referee for a soccer game on Sunday that featured a predominantly Spanish speaking team. At one point, a player on the opposing team came up to me and said, "You know they are swearing in Spanish, right?" (Swearing can get a player a red card.) Um, no. Apparently, several players said "puta" during the game, which I now know means bitch. That seems like a very odd expression to say when your shot badly misses the goal. Perhaps son of a bitch, but just bitch doesn?t seem to fit. Regardless, my New Year?s resolution will be to learn Spanish swear words and the appropriate expression to tell the players that I know what they?re saying so knock it off.I?m a little late in writing about this but Tuesday night?s Pittsburgh Penguins-Detroit Red Wings game was amazing. It's only November but the 7-6 overtime win will be the game of the year. I know there has been a lot of discussion about what to do with Jordan Staal, but if the Penguins are able to keep him at a reasona...
Hockey ?n Heels Ladies Club
2008-09-24 00:29:00
So the Penguins have a Ladies Club, and I didn?t know about it? Here are the details:The Pittsburgh Penguins have created "The Penguins Hockey ?n Heels Ladies Club" from the great success of the program last season. The Penguins Hockey ?n Heels Ladies Club is offering an exclusive membership for the 2008-2009 season. As a member, you will receive the following benefits:? One (1) game ticket in the Club Level Seating for three (3) games which includes event ticket, event premium item and buffet dinner ? Locker Room Tour ? Limited Edition Framed Art Piece * Locker Room Tour, On-Ice Demonstration, Morning skate will be on an away game date (TBD). Players for meet & greet are subject to availability. Capitals Ticket Increase
2008-08-26 21:27:00
Since I moved to the Washington DC area several years ago, I have attended the Washington Capitals-Pittsburgh Penguins games whenever possible. There are thousands of other Pittsburgh transplants living in the area, so I have even arranged to buy group tickets through the Capitals for these games. For Capitals fans out there who aren?t happy about this arrangement of having Penguins fans buy tickets (that of course help pay the salaries of Mike Green, Alex Ovechkin and Cristobel Huet, I mean, Jose Theodore), you?ll be glad to know that there are generally a couple of token Caps fans as part of our group.Anyway, a few weeks ago, I contacted my Caps? ticket representative about purchasing tickets for the Penguins-Capitals games for the 2008-2009 season. Unlike the past few years, where we would receive discounted tickets for purchasing in bulk, this is not the case anymore. Apparently, the Penguins games as well as several other games during the season (I believe the Philadelphia ...
Ryan Malone, a Battered Face of Courage
2008-06-06 17:30:00
(c) OnFrozenBlog - http://www.onfrozenblog.com/ - I write today in praise of a Penguin. It’s true. Penguins’ right wing Ryan Malone redefined courage in these just completed Stanley Cup Finals - even by hockey’s heightened standards of beaten up bravado. He had his nose already broken and swollen before he absorbed a further face-disfiguring ...
Broken Down Bandwagon comes to a screeching halt!
2008-06-05 07:54:00
It is no secret as to who has been the favourite team of most NHL fans during the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Pittsburgh Penguins have become the darlings of this year?s playoffs, which has prompted many to jump on their bandwagon. Boasting intriguing youth such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeny Malkin and Marc-Andre Fleury, it is easy for fans, especially young ones, to get caught up in the hype associated with this young and offensively gifted team.
Great Season
2008-06-05 05:09:00
What a tough way to end the season. I can?t write that I?m upset because the Penguins playoff run has been incredible. It?s not like the Penguins were heavily favored and lost tough game sevens like they did in 1993 to the New York Islanders or in 1996 to the Florida Panthers. Despite not winning the Stanley Cup, 2007-2008 really was an amazing season. Personally, I?m going to remember the unbelievable game five win, "The Shift" by Brooks Orpik, Malkin?s breakaway, slap shot goal from game one of the Flyers series, the Winter Classic victory on New Year?s and watching the Penguins defeat the Capitals twice in person in Washington (including the Backstrom own goal game). If you?re looking for something positive, hopefully you will never see another commercial for The Love Guru, hear the California Soul song from the Dockers ad, see the ridiculous Edge shaving cream spot or question why the US Women?s soccer team would drive to Brazil instead of flying.

Game 5 Recap
2008-06-03 14:22:00
I?m awake...barely after staying up for game five of the Stanley Cup finals. Although I managed to fall asleep during part of the second overtime, I was wide awake for the third overtime and Petr Sykora?s winning goal. I was so excited by the goal that I had difficulty falling asleep. While I was lying in my bed, I couldn?t get the "California Soul" song from the Dockers commercial out of my head.Anyway, what an amazing win. When Detroit took a 3-2 lead in the third period, I though the series was over. However, Max Talbot?s goal with about 30 seconds remaining in regulation kept the Penguins alive. Despite Detroit dominating play in the overtimes, Marc-Andre Fleury made 55 saves leading the Penguins to victory. Here are all of the links you need for more about the Red Wings-Penguins game:- Coverage from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette- A special thanks to Seth Rorabaugh of the P-G?s Empty Netters for conducting a live-blog of game five. 2008 Stanley Cup final: Pittsburgh Penguins vs Detroit Red Wings.
2008-05-22 02:26:00
The quest for the Stanley Cup began with 16 teams and three elimination rounds later, the field has been reduced to the last two.To the opinion of the majority of hockey observers and backed by their impressive playoff records, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Detroit Red Wings represent the two big forces both in the Eastern and the Western conference. The Penguins tied a NHL playoff record by winning their three first matches of every series along the way. The Senators, swept in four games, while the Rangers and the Flyers both managed to win a single game in their home building after falling 0-3 to the Penguins. A 12-2 record for three rounds is not common. The offense never slowed down. Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marian Hossa are producing on a great pace while players like Jordan Staal, Pascal Dupuis and Maxime Talbot can score big goals at critical times. Defense men Sergei Gonchar supports the offense and has valuable experience at the defense position. Another defense men wo...

2008 NHL Stanley Cup Finals Preview and Prediction
2008-05-20 08:01:00
The Stanley Cup Finals are set as the Detroit Red Wings get set to open the Finals at home against the Eastern Conference champion Pittsburgh Penguins. This looks to be one of the most entertaining Finals in recent memory as two of the most talented teams in the NHL go head to head for hockey's ultimate prize.Detroit vs. PittsburghBreakdown: This should be one heck of a series to watch. Both teams can really skate. Both teams can shut you down on defense. Both teams have goalies who are on top of their game right now. At the end of the day I give the slight edge to the Pens. I think they are a little bit deeper, a little bit more talented, a little bit younger, a little bit hungrier, a little bit better on defense, and a little bit better in goal. All in all that adds up to a Stanley Cup for Pittsburgh in my book. The Penguins are clicking on all cylinders and have been more impressive against better competition this post-season than Detroit. The Pens are battle tested and ready to...
Pens To Cup Final
2008-05-19 21:26:00
The Pittsburgh Penguins are the first team to the Stanley Cup final. The Pens soundly defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 6-0 Sunday night leaving no doubt that the Pens loss in game four was a wake-up call.
Pittsburgh Penguins qualifies for the Stanley Cup final.
2008-05-19 15:25:00
The Pittsburgh Penguins has completely dominated game five of their series with the Philadelphia Flyers yesterday and qualified for the Stanley Cup final with a decisive 6-0 victory. The Penguins did not waste any time yesterday. After ten minutes of play, Ryan Malone and Evgeni Malkin gave Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead. They have scored three other goals during the secon period to put the game out of range for the Flyers. Marian Hossa with his ninth of the playoffs then Ryan Malone with his second goal of the game and Jordan Staal with his sixth of the playoffs. The third period was a formality but the Penguins did add another goal from the stick of Pascal Dupuis. In net, Marc-André Fleury registered his third shutout of the playoffs. The Penguins only lost two games this far in the playoffs and have been perfect at the Mellon Arena in these 2007-2008 playoffs. The team will now benefit of a little rest until the series between the Detroit Red Wings and the Dallas Stars concludes.(Picture: Sid...

Penguins-Flyers Storylines
2008-05-05 12:06:00
Now that the Pittsburgh Penguins have defeated the New York Rangers, we can all focus on the Eastern conference final between the Pens and the Philadelphia Flyers. For those of you seeking storylines for the series, let me be of assistance of what you will hear from sportscasters and writers over the next week.Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are both located in Pennsylvania, or some variation of this such as the battle of Pennsylvania or the Keystone State rivalry. Let?s face it: this is truly a battle between fans that choose pop versus fans who say soda.In the Eastern conference semi-finals, Jordan Staal of the Penguins defeated his older brother Marc Staal of the Rangers. Jordan Staal has no siblings on the Flyers. (Or does he? [dramatic pause] No he does not.)The Flyers? R.J. Umberger is the Pittsburgh area. Specifically, Umberger is from Plum, which was on of the high schools that my high school faced regularly in sporting events (the last part will not be mentioned during any ...
