TAKEN FROM: ?Plagiarism allegations jolt school? Chicago Tribune WRITTEN BY: James Kimberly, Tribune reporter, May 30, 2008 HIS ORIGINAL IDEAS: Strict policies that put it at the forefront of efforts to weed out plagiarism led a prominent high school to take action Thursday against its top administrator and top student. School District 203's superintendent moved to reassign Naperville Central High School Principal Jim Caudill next school year, while student Steve Su is being asked to return his valedictorian's medal, after each plagiarized portions of speeches they gave during commencement events last week, the district announced Thursday. District 203 students and teachers are required to submit written papers through software designed to identify plagiarized passages, such as the software available from http://www.turnitin.com/. Students caught plagiarizing get a failing grade on the assignment for a first offense, and penalties escalate for subsequent offenses. "It's not done ...

Anti Plagiarism Tools

Everyone’s heard of Copyscape, the super duper plagiarism detection tool. At other times, it’s a useful tool, such as when you’ve subbed out ...

Rowling back in the plagiarism spotlight
2008-04-15 09:23:00
Rowling tells court she's stopped working | Reuters An emotional J.K. Rowling said on Monday she had stopped working on a new novel because her creativity was stifled by a fan's bid to print an unofficial encyclopedic companion to her Harry Potter series. The 42-year-old British author and Warner Bros. are suing independent U.S. publisher RDR Books, which plans to publish "The Harry Potter Lexicon," a 400-page reference book written by Steve Vander Ark and based on his popular fan Web site (www.hp-lexicon.org).Rowling has decided that possible plagiarism is too much for her. She can't possibly go on while other people use her work, or just capitalize on her success. Normally this would only bother me a little bit. I do believe in protecting copywrited works. However, there is something to be said for the flow of ideas. Rowling should know a little something about that:JK Rowling Plagiarism, Neil Gaiman, Worst Witch, RK Larry Potter & Tanya Grotter "Comic book fans hav...

Plagiarism and how to Avoid it
2008-03-31 10:06:00
Plagiarism is taking somebody else’s expressions and passing them off as your possess. We expect you’ve been educated concerning plagiarism in high school. Other than it won’t spoil anything to repeat it once again, since it’s even more dangerous in college not to copy someone else’s work. By means of the Internet, it’s actually simple to hit upon sources you are able to copy and paste into a report, meaning you don’t have to do all the work concerned. Conversely, it’s in addition really trouble-free for your lecturer to realize if you copied and pasted, as professors can go to websites like turnitin.com, type in a key phrase and see if they obtain any matches. What’s the major concern? It’s called educational honesty. Your work is supposed to be just that, your work. If you’re taking information in addition to arguments from other people’s works, you require giving them thanks. Colleges take educational honesty in fact, in fact gravely. In case you get caugh...

I found out that two days are enough to take a rest from posting. I did not write anything during the last two days, I took a vacation from thinking what to write. Actually, an excuse for me to do some other things. During the weekend I checked the papers of my students, a thing that most teachers hate to do. Some students are really smart and brilliant enough but there are also those who pretended to be so. Some did their papers hardly and honestly, but there are also those who plagiarised their papers. I hate plagiarism, but students simply plagiarise. So I can't do anything except giving 'F' grade to plagiarists.Anyway, let me go back to my sanity. Last Saturday I joined a theology discussion which is popularly called "Bible study" with my regular suport group at Asian Theological Seminary. This group began in November 2006 with a handful of jaded Christians and non Christians alike (Evangelical, Catholic, Agnostic, and Atheist) from different fields of interest (film, law, th...
Forgive Me: A Spirit of Plagiarism
2008-03-27 15:01:00
For this post, I just organized everyone?s comments from the previous thread. Here?s what I came up with ? I?ve paraphrased at times, sometimes turned statements into questions and added a few questions of my own.Toward Conceptualizing Forgiveness: Forgiveness is?1. Not taking revenge; this involves a healing process.2. A release of anger and resentment that can become a habit (Beth?s link).3. Letting go with no expectations. (Letting go of what?)4. ?Giving completely? ? as based on the word?s etymology. (Giving what completely?)5. Recognizing that everyone makes mistakes and not judging others.6. A way of expressing love.7. It?s one way of not clinging or attaching to the egoistic self. Forgiveness can be viewed as part of the larger process of personal growth.8. It?s for one?s own sake and not others. {I added this one since it usually comes up.}Forgiveness-Distinctions1.- Forgiving vs. forgetting: we don?t forget in order not to get hurt again in the same way.2. Forgiving self vs....

Yet another story on plagiarism - Friends turned plagiarists
2008-03-02 12:36:00
I feel utterly disappointed that there are some who do copy from others… and profiteer from it. It’s even more disappointing if they are your friends. Well, looks like I have to live with that for now. Plagiarism is nothing new. Someone makes a identical sounding thing off you, and attempts to profit. But it is certainly something unfortunate if they happen to be your friends. MSN can be a scary thing. Once you set off rumors, you’ll be assured that you’ll not benefit from it, despite getting the “pioneer advantage”. For example, I let off word of the PageRank update. Perhaps I said a lot more than I should. Then, within the next 5 minutes of telling someone about that rumor and my opinions on it, they began posting on their blogs - down to the complete details I’ve mentioned! That’s convenient. In the dog-eat-dog world of news sites, having the pioneer advantage seems to help. Though, probably not anymore since once something is ...

Bloomberg: Cast A Giant Shadow

NYT Whaddijathinkwuzgonnahappen? Cable Tee Vee's making a big deal of Bloomberg's BS - playing right into the narcissistic megalomaniac's hands. Bloomberg's ego is terrified he won't be a playa: "In the weeks and months ahead, I will continue to work to steer the national conversation away from partisanship and toward unity; away from ideology and toward common sense; away from sound bites and toward substance. And while I have always said I am not running for president, the race is too important to sit on the sidelines, and so I have changed my mind in one area. If a candidate takes an independent, nonpartisan approach ? and embraces practical solutions that challenge party orthodoxy ? I?ll join others in helping that candidate win the White House."More from the NYT & NYDNAn aside: ...

Well, I guess it's not plagiarism if I tell you this post is from Next Reformation. And actually, that he cites his source as well. In any case, it's a great post:?We need to begin to read the Bible differently. Americans have been preoccupied with the end of the Gospel of Matthew, the Great Commission: ?Go and make.? I call them go-and-make missionaries. These are the go-and-fix-it people. The go-and-make people are those who act like it?s all in our power, and all we have to do is ?finish the task.? They love that passage! But when read from the center of power, that passage simply reinforces the illusion that it?s about us, that we are in charge.?I would like to suggest a new favorite passage, the Great Invitation. It?s what we find if we read from the beginning of the Gospels rather than the end. Jesus says, ?Come, follow me. I will make you fishers of men.? Not ?Go and make,? but ?I will make you.? It?s all about Jesus. And do you know the last words of Jesus to Peter, in Joh...

So, I log on today, and decide to do key word searches on Google to see when and on what page my articles, posts, etc show up. Just a thing I do to see how well my SEO is working. Well, don't cha know, by doing this I found out that another blogger on Google just stole one of my posts, changed a few words around and has not given me the credit for MY hard work on that post! It's an article that I put on my other blog entitiled The Art of Flirting at the Gym". This dolt of a person, copied my article from paragraph to paragraph, and inserted their own bad grammar, substituted a few words throughout and didn't even bother to post a link to my blog where they found it. I am livid! That article was the result of my brainstorming, my writing, my editing and of course, my own personal view on the subject. How DARE people do that! I went on their blog and told them that what a talentless hack they must be to have to steal other people's work, and that they need to take it down....

Barack Obama Responds To Plagiarism Accusations With Contradictions
2008-02-19 23:40:00
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama sparked controversy with a February 16th Wisconsin speech, where he used lines from Gov. Deval Patrick's Just Words speech almost word for word (pun intended). The similarities - which hit the internet long before Hillary Clinton's campaign latched onto it, contrary to popular belief - were dismissed by Patrick's camp, now, as well.

Hillary Clinton & Clinton Racist Staffers Use Obama "Plagiarism" Accusation
2008-02-19 09:34:00
Hillary Clinton and the Clinton Campaign Managers are being racist in my view, and that includes the new campaign head, Maggie Wiliams, who's Black but is so into the campaign and wanting to please Senator Clinton she can't see straight. She's got to wake up. This is why. Look, they've accused Obama of "just words" and not speaking on policy substance and the hidden rule is that Black politicians like Obama and Deval Patrick, the Governor of Massechusetts, talk in inspiring terms, but are weak on policy, which is another veiled way of saying..They're not intelligent because they're Black. That's right. That's what Hillary Clinton is saying. That's why Barack Obama went to Governor Patrick and borrowed the retort Obama recited last Saturday in Wisconsin. Because both Obama and Governor Patrick faced the same racist approach from opposition White candidates who implied that in some way they were not good at talking about policy or providing substance and while they ...
Plagiarism vs Excerpting and Believing in Someone: The Obama Plagiarism Iss
2008-02-19 07:43:00
Sen. Hilary Clinton had accused Sen. Barrack Obama of plagiarising a speech he used in the Wisconsin campaign which Clinton said is from Mr. Patrick Deval who is also closed to Obama. You may ask how low and how irrational the accusations are becoming and how desperate the Clinton camp is going in order to prevent another Obama victory in the upcoming primaries. It's getting dirties by the day. Let us examine a video presentation from YouTube and my take on this issues.Barack Obama's Wisconsin speech from 2/17/08The speeches might be similar but was it plagiarism? If you believe in what your friend have said and you used it in your speech, was it plagiarism? If you genuinely believe in something and you talk about it, was it plagiarism?I think it is not plagiarism but a confirmation of belief and conviction in what a person or a friend have said.“Deval and I trade ideas all the time. He has occasionally used lines of mine and at the dinner in Wisconsin I used some words of hi...
Borrowed Words, Heated Exchanges, and a Tight Race
2008-02-19 06:31:00
Photo by Brett Weinstein/Flickr A night before the ?Cheesehead/L??au? primary, both candidates in the Democratic race are trying to reduce expectations. Wisconsin and Hawaii will vote tomorrow but the state both candidates are looking at is Wisconsin. The race is turning out to be a dead heat. Obama had been the favorite in Wisconsin following his huge wins in the Potomac primary last Tuesday, but it now seems that Hillary Clinton could leave the state smiling. Bad weather in the Midwest has amended the campaign schedules of both Clinton and Obama in Wisconsin. Due to the weather, Clinton will end up spending more time in the state during the last 48 hours than Obama will. The Obama campaign worked to lower expectations on Monday. David Plouffe, the campaign manager for Obama talked about the opposition?s campaign in Wisconsin. "[Hillary] is competing very heavily here. They have had some amusing and creative reason for why they have not won states so ...

2008-02-18 22:46:00
You know how sometimes you just have a gut feeling about how something might go? Well in terms of the primary tomorrow in Wisconsin I really have no gut feeling anymore. A week ago I would have put the over/under at about a 10% victory for Obama. But then, Hillary decided to fight for her life in Wisconsin, spending money, making campaign stops, and even going negative on Barack Obama. Now in the middle of it all there seems to be some controversy about an Obama speech that sounds an awful lot like the same speech given by Deval Patrick. But most importantly to me, neither camp is really suggesting that they believe that they are going to win... which is generally a good indication that both camp think that there is at least a chance that they will lose. My best guess (which is not backed up by any gut feeling) is that Obama will win by a very slim margin... perhaps even closer than the polls are showing. It would be a fairly hollow victory after his string of big victories since S...

2008-01-11 05:00:00
Today?s article is sensational! A few online friends of ours have disclosed that plagiarism has reached new heights here in Malaysia. In the past, plagiarism would be limited to copying materials from hardcopies or the internet. But now, Malaysian plagiarists have relied upon a new method that if we look at it closely might not be legally wrong! I am not sure how and where they got this idea in the first place but it must have its origins somewhere from the internet somehow. Malaysian are known to be copycats, hence it is more likely that they copied this method from somebody else most probably from those outside of Malaysia. I?m sure that you are wondering what this hype is all about but believe me, I do have concerns of my own about disclosing this technique today. Today?s disclosure might create a tsunami wave of new plagiarists here in Malaysia and that is something that I personally feared dreadfully! However, I hope and ...

If you steal from one author, it's plagiarism - if you steal from two, it's research. (American screen writer Wilson Mizner)Broadly speaking, plagiarism as per the popular literature on the subject refers to use of another's work without giving credit. This dangerous trend is not new but advent of the Internet has facilitated the speed and methods used.It is a chronic problem that has been greatly facilitated by the resources rich Internet. Students (mostly those who are not Internet savvy), who plagiarize, do it old fashion way here -- finding some relevant article printed somewhere and getting it typed. In case one article does not cover all dimensions of the topic, a wary student may get some old book on the subject (perceiving that the teacher might not have read it), mark apparently relevant paragraphs and give it to the typist to prepare the assignment. The source material is commonly known among students' fraternity as chappa or nuskha. Some may proof read the typed paper...
