Vatican: life on other planets a possibility
2008-05-15 04:07:00
Rev Jose Gabriel Funes, head of the Vatican Observatory and a scientific adviser to the Pope believes there is a strong possibility that life exists on other planets. The life forms Funes has in mind doesn't exclude humanoid types, even a race more advanced than humanity."Just as there is a multiplicity of creatures on earth, there can be other beings, even intelligent, created by God. This is not in contrast with our faith because we can't put limits on God's creative freedom."Funes sees no contradiction in belief in the existence of such beings and faith in his God. He even speculates that a good name for them might be "brother extraterrestial". No mention if they might regard such a label as sexist. It's unlikely that any alien civilization could possibly outdo the Vatican when it comes to out-and-out weirdness. The present eccentric residing on the throne of St Peter is low key compared to some of the acts that preceded him - take a glance at this list of former Popes."Sightin...

SEE not infer. The technology does not use glass lenses nor reflective mirrors but an advanced form of a pinhole camera, the "pinhole" technique is called Fresnel zone plates. New Scientist article. The technical hurdles would be tricky but nothing unbelievable. Essentially we would need to launch two spacecraft.: one is the "lens" and one is the "receptor".  The focal point using the Fresnel method is kilometers away from the lense, ergo the two spacecraft solution. Go read the whole article, just fascinating. Feeds right into this post: Planet Hunting, The Next Generation - The Lyot Project

Brown Dwarfs -New Link Between Stars & Planets
2008-04-11 17:14:00
A cold brown about 40 light-years from our solar system might represent a new class of objects that are a missing link between planets and stars. The spent star floats freely in space, not bound to a star. Its mass is somewhere between 15 and 30 times that of Jupiter. And it is about 660 degrees Fahrenheit (350 Celsius), cooler than any other known object in its class. The mass of brown dwarfs is usually less than 70 Jupiter masses. A brown dwarf spends its lifetime getting colder and colder in contrast to a star like our sun, which spends most of its lifetime burning hydrogen and keeping a constant internal temperature,The brown dwarf, named , was found by an international team using the Canada France Hawaii Telescope and Gemini North Telescope, both located in Hawaii, and the a European Southern Observatory telescope in Chile. The newly-discovered brown dwarf, CFBDS J005910.83-011401.3, looks much more like a giant planet than the known classes of brown dwarfs, both because of its l...

Earth Like Planets Not Rare in Milky Way
2008-02-19 20:12:00
Using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, a team of scientists found that at least 20 percent, and possibly the majority (as many as 60 percent) of stars similar to the sun are candidates for forming rocky planets. The Legacy Science Program set out to determine whether planetary systems like ours are common or rare in the Milky Way. What they found is that many, perhaps even most, of the sun-like stars in our galaxy could well harbor Earth-like planets. The Spitzer team found that at least 1 in 5 neighboring solar-mass stars have the right conditions to have formed terrestrial worlds. This new research indicates that worlds with potential for life may be relatively common. The research appears in Astrophysical Journal Letters, and the findings were also presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The research team included University of Arizona astronomer Michael Meyer and colleagues John Carpenter of the California Institute of Technolog...
New Study: Habitable Planets Are Common

More than half of the sunlike stars in the galaxy could have terrestrial planets with the potential to harbor life, a new study suggests. The research, announced yesterday at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Boston, Massachusetts, is just one of a set of recent findings that suggest the roster of potential life-harboring worlds is huge?even in our own solar system. linkphoto

Many, perhaps most, nearby sun-like stars may form rocky planets
2008-02-18 02:51:00
Astronomers have discovered that terrestrial planets might form around many, if not most, of the nearby sun-like stars in the disk of our galaxy. These new results suggest that worlds with potential for life might be more common than thought.

2 Planets 170 Light Years from Earth Cause Planetary Collision
2008-01-21 05:51:00
Two planets may have crashed together recently, resulting in one planet that's weirdly hot for its size. The planet 2M1207B, 170 light years from Earth, is 1300 degrees Celsius, despite being smaller than Saturn, judging from its infrared radiation. Young planets are generally hotter than older planets, but such a small planet should have cooled off quickly. So University of Arizona astronomers claim another planet crashed head-on into it, and gave us this action-packed reconstruction.

Tiny Planets - Columbus

The other day I spent a few hours out shooting more tiny planets. The sky started out cloudy but soon became very clear. I was able to shoot on the Santa Maria down on the waterfront, which was a rare occurrence since the ship is always locked up. While I was taking pictures of it, two guys pulled up in a pickup and told me they were doing maintenance on it for 15min and I can take some pics on the ship if I wanted and I couldn't pass that up. What do you guys think of the new planets?TheBobBlog

These tiny and not so tiny balls show how enormous are the differences between different astronomical objects. If Earth is a glass ball......then Jupiter is a football... ...and you'd fit into the Sun......and Sirius would crush youAn other series:We have no actual photographs of other stars than our Sun that show surface details, because they're just too far away, so the rest is artwork based on what we do know about them - their color and size.VV cephei is the largest star known - it's diameter is about 2000 times our sun'sAnd yet even it is just a tiny dot compared to the Milky Way itselfAnd an animation of the same objects
?Twilight zones? on scorched planets could support life
2007-12-13 14:01:00
Rocky extrasolar planets thought to be half frozen and half scorched might instead rock back and forth, creating large swaths of twilight with temperatures suitable for life. Because of gravitational tugs with the objects they orbit, rocky bodies often settle into trajectories in which they always show the same face to their hosts. Such ‘tidally locked’ ...

Cosmos War of the Planets
2007-11-18 00:00:00
Cosmos: War of the Planets (Italian: Battaglie negli spazi stellari) is an Italian film directed by Alfonso Brescia and starring John Richardson, released in 1977. It is known for its nonsensical plot, unintentionally comical dialogue, and terrible camera work. The film begins with the crew of a spaceship seeing explosions in space and asteroids flying by. They are afraid that they are going to be hit, but their ship's computer, named Wiz, tells them that they were seeing the "refraction" of an event that took place millions of years ago. Overjoyed, the ship's crew hug and kiss each other.Next follows a scene within the Orion space complex (whose introduction includes stock footage of the Japanese space launch center) of Captain Mike Hamilton's slapping a fellow officer. Soon he is called to report on this behavior to the base commander. He says that the other officer did not give him a command personally, but told him to follow the directions of a computer. Hamilton's attitude a...

New Planets Forming Around Pleiades
2007-11-15 04:02:00
Rocky terrestrial planets, perhaps like Earth, Mars or Venus, appear to be forming or to have recently formed around a star in the Pleiades ("seven sisters") star cluster, the result of "monster collisions" of planets or planetary embryos. This is the first clear evidence for planet formation in the Pleiades, and the results presented here may well be the first observational evidence that terrestrial planets like those in our solar system are quite common. The Pleiades star cluster, in the constellation Taurus, is well-known in many cultures. It is named for the seven daughters of Atlas and Pleione, who were placed by Zeus among the stars in Greek mythology and is cited in the Bible ? "Can you bind the beautiful Pleiades? Can you loose the cords of Orion?" (Job 38:31). The automaker Subaru's name is the Japanese word for the Pleiades, Rhee said. The Pleiades is probably the best known star cluster and the most striking to the naked eye.Although referred to as the "seven sisters," "t...
