Cubs Minor Leaguers Offseason Plans
2009-10-30 00:15:00 Just a few quick hits here on some Cubs prospects and what they'll be up to this offseason. I'll pass along any more that I hear about.- Chris Carpenter has returned to Kent State to finish up a degree in business and train with the baseball team. Interestingly, only 26 current MLB players and managers (out of nearly 800) have college degrees, per a Wall Street Journal article in June. For a lot of reasons, many baseball careers don't work out, so it's great to see a kid get a degree to fall back on.- DJ LeMahieu has had a busy offseason, which started at instructs after the season ended. Earlier this month he travelled to Washington D.C. with his...
Apartments, Metra and pre-foreclosure plans in the news this week
2009-10-09 22:24:00 Here's a round-up of this week's residential real estate news in Chicago: 1. Apartment vacancies are on the rise: Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism reported that more for-sale properties going on the market as rentals is pushing rents downward and increasing vacancy this quarter- meaning it should now be easier to find an apartment 2. Homes near the Metra are selling better than others: According to the Chicago Sun-Times, you can count on a home near a Metra station selling for 2-4%- not surprising, since you won't have to spend that money on parking at the Metra station. 3. Nearly 10,000 new foreclosures were filed in the first half of 2009 on the Southwest side: The Southwest News-Herald says vacant homes are staying vacant longer, further bringing down property values. 4. Price Wars II – Aircel Strikes Back, Slash Tariff Plans
2009-09-04 14:35:00 It suddenly feels like revisiting the early years of this decade when we had all the new and upcoming cellular network operators clamoring over one another in providing the cheapest call rates. Started in 1999, Aircel broke into the tough market in Tamil Nadu by offering free SMS for the very first time. Ever since we have seen so many marketing campaigns by the operators to try and nibble away every possible fraction of the market shares. Just at a time, when we thought that customer acquisition through price wars was about to take a backseat in favor of offering value adding services for mobile phones, we rather see a possible resurgence of the same. This time, it is the Docomo effect! Taking a cue from their relatively successful pay-as-you-use pricing strategy, Aircel has announced the launch of their new prepaid tariff structure where the costs are calculated on a per-second basis. This is currently only for its subscribers in the Kolkata circle. Here are the details of the ne...

RCom Plans To Launch Mobile Wallet Service With Vending Machines – Ho
2009-09-04 11:08:00 We have been harping on the fact that e-wallets and mwallets are important for the growth of digital commerce in India and we discussed this point in our last WATBlog Panel discussion as well. Well its seems that telco’s have already started putting the pieces together as far as launch plans for mwallets are concerned. Businessline reports that Reliance Communications is planning to launch an SMS-based vending service in collaboration with E-Cube, an embedded software company. The services would be launched with actual physical presence of vending machines connected to a screen which shall flash sms numbers that ones needs to sms to buy a product. The user who smses shall be charged the amount of the product in its mobile bill. A similar service debuted in other parts of the world like Russia as well earlier this year. Apparently this isn’t the first time such an initiative is being tried in India. Way back in 2003 BPL Mobile (Now loop mobile) had reportedly tried launch...

Twitter Plans to Add Location to Tweets
2009-08-31 11:00:00 Twitter has already redefined the way the media industry gets and spreads news. So often, major news is broken on Twitter before it reaches any other medium. We recently told you how Twitter was improving its API by changing the ReTweet options. Now, Twitter plans to add geotagging to it’s interface. So now, you can mark the location you are tweeting from. As of now, your current location can be given by changing your Twitter settings, but it’s not exactly reliable. Your custom search option on Twitter Search does allow you to set location settings for tweets, but one trial shows you how much scope there is for development. Hence, this article on how Twitter plans to initiate Geotagging shows that Twitter is thinking about improving the systems. Around this time last month, we’d covered how Mumbairains was the trending topic on Twitter. Now imagine all those Mumbaikars with mobile phones tweeting how bad the rain was and you’d actually know which areas were ...

Treatment plans for the future
2009-08-04 17:26:00 Wednesday I have a pulmonary follow up visit at the UCSF chest clinic. What makes this appointment different, other than the fact that I will be breaking in a new Pulmonary fellow, is that we will be discussing some future treatments options, including bronchial Thermoplasty and Endobronchial Valve therapy (EBV) . At the present time, both of these procedures are still considered investigational, but both are in the process of seeking FDA approval . The latter (EBV), has never been done on an asthmatic, but because I have severe air -trapping, similar to that seen in emphysemic patients, it might be an option. I’ll go into more details about these specific treatments options in a future post. I’m also requesting a referral to be seen at the University of Pittsburgh Asthma Institute in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania . World renowned Pulmonologist and severe asthma researcher, Sally Wenzel who’s part of the SARP team, has agreed to take me on as a patient. Dr Wenzel ta...

Google India Plans Expansion, Integration And Education, As They Launch Fre
2009-07-17 12:28:00 With the internet medium moving rapidly Google India plans to focus on three important brackets in 2009-’10. Parminder Singh, Business Head, Google India spoke to exchange4media.com about their priorities to expand their business. He also added saying that their major focus is on education, integration and expansion. “An initiative like ‘Digital Base’ – where we have held education workshop for advertisers in their offices to make them understand the power of the Internet.” They are also focusing heavily on social media given its tremendous growth and scope. People are using technology in increasingly sophisticated ways, particularly around social media and social networks. The danger is that a large portion of the population will have less access to jobs, private records and digital databanks if they’re not well informed with social media. Hence its a very good move to educated the masses and eventually expanding themselves, while integrations will follow...

2009-07-01 16:08:00 Last Saturday I did my first post-hospital semi long training walk for the new racing season, but it turned out to be much more difficult than I thought it would be. I was pretty much breathless the entire distance and had to terminate the walk at mile 7 instead of mile 8 as planned. Since my lungs tend to dictate how far and fast I can walk, it looks like the San Francisco (1/2) marathon is NOT going to happen for me this year. My lungs are just too screwed up right now to tackle a 13 mile walk. That last flare up really did a number on my body, and with less than 4 weeks to prepare, there’s no way Id be able to pull it off. I’m a little bummed, because I really thought Id be healthy enough, to not only do the race, but also be able to push myself hard enough to PR it. I may, as the date approaches, sign up to do the 5K or progressive marathon just for fun. A lot of my friends do the various races at the SF marathon every year and it would be nice to at least h...

CPS plans to cut teachers at city schools

Ford Press Release reviews future technology plans
2009-06-24 11:52:00 In a press release Tuesday, Ford discussed some of the progress that has been made to date, as well as plans over the next few years. New news: Ford will introduce the EcoBoost technology for the F-150 in 2009. It's been said before that it was coming, but it wasn't clear that it is going to be this fast. Old news: Ford will offer dual-clutch transmissions. It's known that one recipient will be the all-new Focus that is coming to us from Europe (by 2011 - note the BEV Focus below). And the weight reduction program, which is not yet going full speed but should drop a couple of hundred pounds from each product once it is. That will be very interesting to watch - and in the age of 4400 pound Taurus SHOs it is very much needed. What wasn't said: the plan is to add direct injection across the engine lineup. This has been discussed before, but that part of the story is probably being held back so as not to take away from the EcoBoost news. Th...

Ford didn't cancel plans to bring the Focus RS to North America!
2009-06-08 03:48:00 One bit of news last month that we meant to comment on was (in early May) the news that Ford was allegedly planning to bring the Focus RS to the United States, and then at the end of May that Ford had canceled those plans. We were laughing so loud at these two news stories - picked up all over the web and even in Britain - that we were rolling around on the floor. Folks, there weren't any plans to cancel - as anybody in the press should have known. The Focus RS can't be brought to the North America because: 1) the certification process would take a year or more, and b) the current Focus will be replaced by a remodeled car inside of two years (and that's the one which will be built here, at long last). That means that as soon as outrageous sums of money were spent to certify the car, it would go away. A platform that has never before been certified for sale in the United States. Does anybody in their right mind think that Ford could spend that kind of money to sell a de...

Plans, Books & Twitter
2009-05-08 05:49:00 Tomorrow's another public holiday. Hurrah! And thanks to that, a couple of pals are coming over tonight for a scare-a-thon. Probably to scare the bejabbers out of each other. Haha! Well, being the scaredy cat that I am (and being home alone at that), I'm not so keen on it, but hey, it's better than watching them alone.I'm still thinking over my Harvest Festival weekend plans. I just don't feel like taking the bus and ferry, making the long travel on my own. That said, when again will I get the chance to have a good four or five days back home? A plan of some sort which involves bringing a group of friends over did come to mind, but the last two or three previous occasions that I suggested it was met with less than enthusiastic reactions. Besides that, everyone already seem to have plans of their own.Oh yeah, I've finally finished reading Twilight, and I'm more than halfway through New Moon. (Couldn't find the final two books that day, so I couldn't complete the set) Anyway....

Toyota Plans Touch Tracer Display System on 2010 Prius
2009-03-06 18:53:00 Even though the Prius was one of the first Hybrids on the road, that doesn't mean the engineers at Toyota can kick up their feet and relax. With other companies producing their own hybrid vehicles, Toyota has to keep bringing out new things to stay on top of the market. Their most recent innovation, the Touch Tracer Display, is aimed at safety rather than fuel economy. However, it could still be one of the next features to appear on pretty much every vehicle on the road.
