A New Cooking School in Playa del Carmen
2011-10-14 18:37:00 The list of reasons to visit the Riviera Maya just keeps getting longer and longer! Co.Cos Cocina Cosmopolita Cooking School has made a huge splash in Playa del Carmen, getting rave reviews from local residents and visitors alike! After hearing from friends and fellow foodies that a new cooking school was opening up in Playa, I knew I would have to try it out.Co.Cos' owner/founder Coty Villarreal is an accomplished Chef and student of the world. After traveling extensively though Europe and Asia, including an extended stay in Thailand, she brought her collected knowledge back to her home country, Mexico, armed with a passion to share her experiences with like-minded home cooks. It is this passion and Coty's effervescent personality that is the heart and soul of Co.Co's Cocina Cosmopolita and what makes the learning experience unique. This is actually my third visit to Coty's cooking school. My first class was in July, a birthday present to myself, and a wonderfu...
Pony Camp in Playa del Carmen!
2011-07-05 14:00:00 Monday morning, my kids jumped feet first into their summer vacation, arriving bright and early at the barn for the first day of Pony Camp. Trainer and club owner Paco Magellon has been running this camp during the school vacations and it is something all the young riders in Playa del Carmen look forward to. Paco is so terrific with the kids and he has passed this special gift along to his son Diego who will be assisting him during this summer session. Monday is a day off for the horses so this morning the group learned how to groom a horse from nose to tail. "Brisa" was a patient subject, standing quietly while each of the children took a turn currying, brushing and picking hooves. The kids started to learn a bit about the anatomy of the horse and how to care for these majestic beasts. Later on in the day, as the temperature soared, they all cooled off in the cenote! So far, it's a nice mix of Hipico Playa del Carmen students and a few new children j...

Summer Camp Programs Playa del Carmen 2011
2011-06-22 14:11:00 On the Riviera Maya, summer is now upon us and summer vacation is just around the corner. For many families, the school break means travel! Many will take this time to travel to see their families scattered across Mexico. Others will depart for cooler climates in the US, Europe and Canada. For those staying put, the challenge is always "What to do with the children?". When school is out and most of the extracurricular activities have been suspended for the summer months there is a huge gap to be filled in the daily lives of our young ones. Many families, especially those with two working parents, will be looking for fun summer programs to fill the time for their restless nin@s. Fortunately, there are some nice options for children of all ages to keep them active and occupied until classes start up again at the end of August. These are a few of the programs and summer camps that we have found for kids living in Playa del Carmen and all across the Mayan Riviera. Whet...

Jesus Christ Superstar Reprised in Playa del Carmen!
2011-04-11 16:25:00 A funny thing happened to Rob and me seven years ago during one of our scouting trips to Mexico in the year before we made the move to Playa del Carmen. In April of 2004, we came to Playa, just the two of us, to shop for and hopefully purchase the land on which we would build our condos. One evening, after a long day with our agent, we wandered down 5th Ave. to the zocalo and found a nice quiet restaurant overlooking the square and down to the beach. There seemed to be quite a bit of activity in the park, lots of people setting up for an event of some sort. We saw curtains and scaffolding and lights and thought that perhaps a band would be playing that evening. We took a table on the street, a location that turned out to be house left seating for a community production of Jesucristo Superestrella. I couldn't believe it. Here we were, on the shores of the Mexican Caribbean watching what turned out to be a very good production of Jesus Christ Superstar! It was a magical evening an...
Top 10 Things I Worry About in Playa del Carmen
2011-03-07 17:28:00 My friend Susie Albin-Najera recently wrote a very nice article for her website The Mexico Report that got me thinking. In her piece, "What You Should Really Worry About When Visiting Mexico", Susie recounts a few of the "hidden dangers" that one might encounter while visiting Mexico. As an expat living and working in Playa del Carmen, I too have my own concerns which I feel compelled to share with "Life's a Beach" readers. These are the Top 10 Things I Worry About in Playa del Carmen. 1. I worry that the guys at DAC will forget and put sugar in my morning smoothie instead of honey.2. I worry that one day Senor Luis, will change the location of his empanada cart and I won't be able to find him.3. I worry that at times, I can no longer find the English word for "aguacate". 4. I worry that if I sleep in on a Sunday, Carnitas Teresita will be out of "castacan". 5. I worry that I'm spending ...

Hurrah! Indian Food in Playa del Carmen
2010-09-08 15:54:00 When I got the call on Friday night, I was curious. Isac Bermann, son of legendary Playa restaurateurs Per Langoe and Lena Bermann (Babes Noodles and Bar), was having what he referred to as a "test" dinner at his new restaurant. Having achieved a popular local following with his fresh healthy cuisine at Bermann and Bermann Cafe, Isac recently took over two storefronts in the Hotel Eclipse on 1st Ave. in the heart of Playa's club zone with his new endeavor, SWEco. The new restaurant has been open for a few weeks now and neither Rob nor I had been able to stop in to check out the menu offerings. I was delighted about this unexpected invitation which gave me the just the motivation I needed to get down there and try out Isac's food. Isac had assembled a small group of friendly but discerning palates to test out his new menu. Of course, the lovely Per and Lena were on hand joined by Sara and Steve (Playa Maya News), Michelle and Jorge (Playa Dentist), Monica (Latido de...

The buffet was complete with burgers, hot dogs and chicken hot off the grill with favorite side dishes such as potato salad, baked beans, corn on the cob and even deviled eggs! Los Gringos Perdidos and the Wandering Mexican entertained the beach crowd throughout the afternoon, giving up the stage to J.J. and The Nasty Bastards Band to take us through dinner and the brief fireworks display.  -; - &-nbsp; As usual, the Chefs and staff at Wicky's kept everyone happy and well attended. Top 10 Reasons to Visit Playa del Carmen This Year!
2010-05-31 17:46:00 We adore living in Playa del Carmen! When we first visited the Riviera Maya in 2004, we immediately fell in love with not just the spectacular surroundings but the community as well. Over the past 6 years, we have had the pleasure of meeting hundreds of people who, like us, love Playa del Carmen and have either chosen this area as a home or come here time and time again. What is it that makes this beachfront city so very special? Here is a short list of our Top 10 reasons to visit Playa del Carmen. Beautiful Beaches - Playa del Carmen is blessed with some of the whitest, finest sand in the world, but even on the hottest sunniest day, the sand is cool to the touch. No dashing from your lounge chair to the water like walking across hot coals. Children of all ages will find hours of enjoyment making sandcastles and digging pools on the wide, clean beaches of Playa del Carmen. Top tip: The beaches north of town are practically deserted. Pack a cooler and claim your own piece ...

Road Trip 2010 - Day 1 - Playa del Carmen to Calakmul
2010-04-01 19:14:00 Welcome to the Kinnon Family Road Trip 2010! Day 1 of our itinerary brought us from Playa del Carmen to Calakmul, a ruin site of great cultural significance in the Classic Period, located in the state of Campeche. We made great time moving south on 307, the same road that carried us to Belize in 2008 and then Guatemala in 2009. As expected, as every year, we noted more and more construction, particularly in Tulum and Bacalar. The turnoff toward Escarcega took us into new territory but through a countryside that remained familiar. The well kept, wide two lane highway stretched out long and straight, through acres and acres of small farms and sugarcane plantations. While this kind of ride bores my husband to tears, I enjoy trying to make out what crops are being cultivated by the campesinos and what also seems to grow wild in the fields along the road. No video games. No DVDs. Just books and a lot of imagination. The ruins at Rio BecThis is an area far more dependent on agricultur...
Affordable Produce in Playa del Carmen
2008-12-04 14:54:00 Since our last trip to The United States, a fabulous family Thankgiving and 60th birthday celebration for my MIL in Miami, I am even more appreciative of the affordability of our food staples and produce. Yesterday was Wednesday, the day where all the stores have fruits and veggies marked down even lower than usual. 2008-12-03 17:41:00 Last night was the inauguration of "Bolister in The Blue", an evening of acoustic music and song from Playa favorite, the talented and charming Chris Bolister. Perched on a swing at the bar, surrounded by friends old and new, Chris entertained the crowd with well-loved tunes from yesterday and today. There was a lot of laughing and singing along and I am certain Tuesday nights will be hopping at The Luna Blue Hotel from now on. Here are a few of the many pictures taken throughout the evening. Salpicar Carwash in Playa del Carmen - Functional AND Fun!
2008-11-24 19:13:00 Now that I am back in school every morning (more on that later) I find that my schedule is getting really tight. My blogging has become less frequent. My message board activities are sporadic. I have been sorely neglecting my fellow blogger pals for the past few weeks (Apologies to all. You know who you are.) Worst of all, my free time with my kids is cut into as well. Now that the little one's are getting older, they are involved in their own extracurricular activities and, where as last year, we had all afternoon to hang out together and play, now I don't see them most days until five o'clock. In response to this, Cole and I have come up with our own special bi-weekly activity, just so that we can do something "special" together, just me and him. What do you do with a five year old boy in the limited space of 45 minutes every other Monday? Why, have an outing at the Salpicar Carwash, of course! Seriously, what kid doesn't like the carw...
The German Baker in Playa del Carmen
2008-11-23 05:02:00 Ever on the lookout for something yummy, last week, I stumbled upon some lovely homemade breads at my favorite produce market, Dac. For the past two weeks, a small table has been set up out front offering samples of these tasty baked goods to the customers of the market, the clientele of "Nativo" and passersby. They have a nice variety of dessert/breakfast breads and muffins including Calabaza (pumpkin), Platano con chocolate (banana with chocolate chips) Elote (corn), Zanahoria con Pasas (carrot with raisins) and Naranja (orange). There is also a variety of savory breads suitable for sandwiches, all made with whole grains and flavored naturally with spices, nuts and seeds. I have now tried almost every flavor and each is wonderful. Unlike most of the cakes and pastries I have tried here, these baked treats are moist and have the proper amount of sweetness. I can't recommend one variety over another. You will just have to try them all. The baker, Sandra, a transp...
Playa del Carmen Construction Update - November 2008
2008-11-11 23:00:00 The high season for vacation rentals is nearly upon us and several developers are putting the finishing touches on their projects while some seem to be a bit behind. This entry should be of as much interest to those of you who have booked one of these condominiums for your holiday vacation as to those of you who have invested in these properties. Some of you have asked why we show some of the same properties in every installment. The reason is two-fold. First we show the properties where many of our customers have invested. The other properties are shown by request from our readers. If there is a project you would like to see represented in these updates, just let me know! The star of the show this year, Azul Fives in Xcalacoco, is exceding all expectations. We toured the property again this week with Buyers looking to pick up an additional unit and we were just blown away. Take a look for yourself! Are we looking forward to Phase 2 of this resort project? Ye...
Dia de los Muertos in Playa del Carmen
2008-11-05 22:46:00 Most people, knowing my disinterest in Halloween, are confused to learn that I really enjoy the celebration of Dia de los Muertos. As a matter of fact, this is my favorite holiday in my new home country and I look forward to it every year! Commonly known as Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), this is actually two holidays celebrated on the first two days of November, presenting an interesting mix of pre-Hispanic practices and Roman Catholicism. November 1st (All Saints Day) and is the day generally set aside to remember children and babies who have passed while November 2nd (All Souls Day) has its focus on adults who have moved on to the next realm. This is a time set aside every year for everyone to recognize, remember and celebrate the lives of their ancestors and departed loved ones. This time of reflection is unique to each family and the festivities vary regionally. It is a time not only to applaud and appreciate accomplishments but to acknowledg...
Welcoming Autumn in Playa del Carmen
2008-09-30 00:11:00 Life in a tropical climate comes with a host of challenges. The scorching sun, the heat, the unrelenting humidity all take some getting used to. (We’re not even going to begin the BUG discussion) After four years, our blood has certainly thinned sufficiently and we have acclimated to the weather of our region. There are certain differences that, no matter how long we live here, we will never truly adjust to. Coming from the northeastern United States, the change of seasons and the accompanying changes in temperature and our surrounding landscape, are ingrained so deeply in our perception of “the way the world works” that we are left every year feeling like something is missing at certain times of the year.In reality, we do have seasonal changes here, some of which are more obvious than others. Nights in December are considerably chillier than those in June. Perhaps not so chilly as to require the purchase of the heavily quilted jackets, scarves and gloves...
Open House at Ak Lu'um - Alternative Education in Playa del Carmen
2008-08-12 13:08:00 Ak Lu'um's new jungle campus is nearly ready and on Monday August 18th they are opening their doors to the community. If you have been investigating the options for your children's education here in Playa del Carmen, Ak Lu'um should be on your short list. Fundacion Ak Lu'um A.C. is Playa del Carmen's only non-profit private school. Using a combination of Waldorf and Learning Through the Arts teaching models, this small bilingual school is a great option for families relocating to the Riviera Maya who are looking for a more holistic approach to education for their school age children. The new campus, designed to be in harmony with its jungle surroundings is built to be self sustaining. Children are taught environmental studies in addition to the nationally standardized curriculum required by the Mexican Government (SEP). Students will maintain a garden and raise chickens, harvesting the organic eggs for use in the school's kitchen, and participat...
VIDAS 2008 - Free Spay and Neuter Clinic in Playa del Carmen!!
2008-08-05 23:28:00 In 2002, VIDAS, which is, appropriately, Spanish for LIVES, began providing spay and neuter services, free of charge, for the residents and their four legged friends in Playa del Carmen and other towns along the Riviera Maya. Founding members Cristina Gutierrez, Ruth Parkin, Robyn Gadojsik and Ginny Gill created Veterinarios Internacionales Dedicados a Animales Sanos, (International Veterinarians Dedicated to Animal Health) to address and meet the need for skilled veterinary services in Latin American countries where many residents can not afford to sterilize their pets, thus preventing unwanted litters and reducing the number of dogs and cats left to fend for themselves on the streets. This passionate group of veterinarians, veterinary students and tireless animal lovers return yearly to our beautiful corner of Mexico to provide assistance to and education for the community. Their goal is to extend their helping hands all acros...

A Home of Our Own - Building in Playa del Carmen
2008-05-26 16:26:00 Well, after almost four years living in Playa del Carmen, we are finally making plans to build a home of our own. We have selected the lot, a nice 831 square meter parcel backing up to the jungle in an area west of 307 called The Campestre. We have hired an architect, Carlos Alamillo (more on him later) who is just now putting pencil to paper to sketch out preliminary layouts and design ideas for our new home. This is the fun part of the process when everyone has their input and everyone’s wish-lists are incorporated into the design. Now is the time for dreaming big. Negotiation, compromise and sacrifice will come soon enough. I hope you will all enjoy following us through the process of bringing our dreams to reality. Carlos came to us through the group developing Rancho Mayab. Because of his background, integrating low impact, eco-friendly home design and construction with the modern conveniences prefered by most of our clients, he is our architect of choice for&n...

Playa del Carmen Construction Update - May 2008
2008-05-13 16:08:00 As requested by "Life's a Beach" Readers...... Far and away our most popular and fastest selling investment property of the year, The Fives is teaming with activity as the enormous free-form pool that meanders throughout the property gets dug in and poured. Many of the towers have been completed and are getting a fresh coat of paint and windows fitted. We spent several hours onsite today with buyers looking to snap up the few remaining units. Due to the recent purchase of a neighboring parcel, The Fives beach frontage has been dramatically increased and is, as always, spectacular. In Playacar Phase 2, a large swath of land has been selectively cleared and dug in preparation for the new project from Origo, Vaiven del Viento. This is the first phase of the ambitious Vaiven project consisting of 149 2 and 3 bedroom luxury condominium residences set on over 9000 square meters of property. Features of this project include underground parking facilities, a...

Parque La Ceiba - The Heart of Playa del Carmen
2008-05-07 17:04:00 Aptly named for the Mayan tree of life, Parque La Ceiba is breathing new life into our community. Inaugurated officially in mid-March yet still a work in progress, Parque La Ceiba is a refreshing oasis in a city that seems bound and determined to cover every square foot of its municipality with luxury condominiums and shopping malls. Our two week trek through Belize kept us from attending the grand opening, so I was very excited to hear that the children of El Papalote School would be treated to a day in the park in celebration of "Dia de los Ninos".The park is located in the "ejido", on the west side of 307 and encompasses an entire city block. (see map at the bottom of the page) The area is completely fenced with only one point of entry, off of calle 1 sur, making it difficult for a child to leave the grounds unattended. Inside, natural trails, ampitheatres, classrooms and creative play areas have been carved into th...

2008-04-18 22:17:00 Yesterday evening, Rob and I were invited to the grand opening party for the offices of Origo, the prolific developers of the fabulous condominium projects "The Elements, Playa del Carmen', "Vaiven" in Playacar and coming soon...."The Elements, Puerto Aventuras". The offices are located, conveniently, just down the street from our house on 10th Avenue in the Tendenza Building. The offices, which are beautiful and completely reflect the style that these developers are knon for, have been built for the use of local Brokers and Agents working with clients and customers. Access to this chic new space is going to be another one of the great sales tools that Origo provides for us in support of our sales efforts. Bravo! For more information about Origo and their current projects Vaiven and The Elements, contact us through our website www.BuyPlaya.com.

"Overrated" in Playa del Carmen
2008-02-26 19:21:00 Just today, I read a post on a popular local message board from a member called "JJS" detailing several of the things in Playa del Carmen he found "overrated" by fellow forum members. While, I did agree with a few of his list items, (I too find the blueberry margaritas at Babes to be just awful) one stuck out like sore thumb. This particular poster found Bad Boyz on the Beach not at all what it was touted to be. While this assessment could easily be put off to a bad night, I was there on that particular evening and I have pictures to prove it! Unfortunately, the thread was locked before I had a chance to respond and post some of the highlights of the evening in rebuttal. JJS, if you are out there, THIS is what you obviously missed on Thursday February 21, 2008 at Bad Boyz on the Beach. We had so much fun on Thursday, that we went back for more on Saturday afternoon. Here are some photos of the action on the beach. Lots of friendly, familiar fac...
MAYAKOBA GOLF CLASSIC PGA TOUR CANCUN MEXICO PLAYA DEL CARMEN
2008-02-24 02:56:00 THIRD ROUND BRIAN GAY ZOOMS OUT TO FIVE- SHOT LEAD. GAY IN CONTROL BY FIVE. Brian Gay (66-67-62-195) birdied five of his final six holes on Saturday en route to a third round 62. The bogey-free, 8-under par round would have tied the course record had Roland Thatcher (71-73-61-205) not broken the mark earlier in the day. Gay will carry a five stroke lead over Steve Marino (67-69-64-200) going into Sunday’s final round. Mexico’s Esteban Toledo (70-69-63-202) is seven back. BUENA SUERTE EN MEXICO
Carnival 2008 in Playa del Carmen
2008-02-18 02:45:00 This evening, the kids and I had the good fortune of being in the right place at the right time. Since Carnival was postponed this year because of the local elections, there has been some confusion about when and if Playa del Carmen would hold this much anticipated festival. While Playa is notorious for its inability to properly deseminate information, this year really took the cake. No posters, no painted banners, no floats lining the streets letting us know that the festival was approaching. In years past, the whole Municipal Plaza has been a whir with activity: vendors hawking their wares, travelling carnies setting up death trap thrill rides, churro carts filling the air with the smell of warm sugar and fun!! Sadly, we seem to have missed out on all that this year. What we did see was a short but enthusiastic parade down 5th Avenue. The kids were thrilled !! This year's parade was a much abbreviated version of Carnival that once stretched from the zocalo ...
