NFL Playoffs - Time to Change the Rules: Overtime's Playoff Modification
2012-01-06 23:04:00 The NFL released a reminder this week about the modified post season rules. The league changed the rules before the start of last season, trying to prevent a first possession field goal from ending a playoff game. However, the rule was not needed last year. This year, it could be. Essentially, the rule prevents a team from winning the game on the first possession, unless they score a touchdown. A touchdown will always end overtime. However, if a team kicks a field goal on that first possession, they then have to kick off and allow the opponent an opportunity to possess the ball. At this point, the team to get the ball second will either lose by not scoring, tie the game and continue playing, or win the game with a touchdown. If both teams have had a chance to possess the ball on offense, the game will end on the first score. And, just to throw this one in there, any defensive score (interception return, fumble return, safety) ends the game as well. Does that all make sense? ...

NFL 2012 Playoffs: AFC Playoff Teams and their Super Bowl Odds
2012-01-05 07:14:00 The online betting crowd is getting geared up for the playoffs and the price per head sports experts are applying Super Bowl winning odds to each playoff team. While the NFC is considered to be the strong favorite to win it all in February, the AFC has some strong teams that will make this year?s Super Bowl fun to watch. Let?s take a look at the AFC playoff teams and compare their Super Bowl odds to their chances of winning the big game. Baltimore Ravens (6 to 1) What makes the Ravens go is its defense and running back Ray Rice. The problem for the Ravens is that if one person on the defense seems off for a game, then the whole defense has a problem functioning. Baltimore still possesses one of the top defenses in all of football, and the Ravens have won a Super Bowl with a much worse offense than what it has now. The pay per head bookie experts seem to think that the Ravens have an excellent chance to win the Super Bowl this year. If Baltimore can hold together and play as a u...

Cubs wonder if juiced Manny ruined their 2008 playoffs
2011-04-09 07:24:00 Alfonso Soriano wonders why Manny Ramirez would taint his once possible hall of fame career by using PEDs."We have a lot of respect for him because the hitter he is,"Alfonso Soriano said. "But what he did surprises me, like a lot of players surprised me who used it before that I never thought would use it. It's very sad an All-Star guy, maybe a future Hall of Famer, does that."Paul Sullivan says many in the Cubs organization wonder if a juiced Ramirez was the advantage the Dodgers needed to knock them out of the playoffs in 2008. Juiced Manny or not, the Cubs didn't hit, field, or pitch well in the entire series. The Dodgers pitching simply shut down the Cubs line-up...

2011-04-03 15:29:00 Bulls Beat #184 - Seeds, MVPs, and playoffs The Chicago Bulls appear to have locked up the #1 seed witha magic number of four and only six games to play. Now the only question is whether they can catch the Spurs and stay ahead of the Lakers for home court in the finals. However, they still have a couple of problems that might trip them up in the playoffs. Derrick Rose looks like your MVP, but can he hold off a late charge from Kobe Bryant. I also discuss why John Hollinger's argument for Dwight Howard really isn't all that sound....

Regular Season A Success - Now The Playoffs...
2010-12-27 01:17:00 Today our Bears overcame an 11 point deficit against one of the top defensive teams in the league (next to us) in the NY Jets with a "stunning" 38-34 victory in our home finale. Our defense deserves credit as well for making critical plays down the stretch when it counted the most.Mark Sanchez and the Jets offense seemed to be on a roll jumping out to an early 21-10 lead, which was cut to 21-17 after Jay Cutler sprinted into the end zone before the half. The Jets kicked a field goal and they led 24-17 at half-time. Then in the 3rd quarter, magic began to happen. Cutler hit Johnny Knox on a 40 yard bomb to tie the game...

What Will It Take To Make the MLS Playoffs?
2010-08-11 00:21:00 A review of the Fire's remaining 14 matches reveals an even seven games at home and seven on the road. Six of the remaining matches are winnable games against the league's bottom dwellers while only three remain against the top tier teams. A bare minimum of ten wins is usually required to qualify for the MLS playoffs but due to the strength of the Western Conference this year more than that will be required to get in. Last season Real Salt Lake needed 11 wins and 40 total points to qualify on the last weekend of the campaign. While the Fire currently sit on 21 points they are five points behind the side currently holding the eighth and final spot. ...

Texas Stars take playoffs game four 3-2 over Chicago Wolves
2010-05-06 05:08:00 The Chicago Wolves and the Texas Stars had another one goal game tonight, ending this time in a regulation win for Texas, 3-2.Brett Sterling scored two goals for the Wolves and was matched by standout rookie Travis Morin, also notching two goals. However the game winning goal came from Dan Jancevski. It was another match marred by poor on-ice officiating. Standing out was a second period call against the Wolves by Terry Koharski. As the Stars threw their extra man on the ice, two players entered the ice instead of one, penetrating as far as the Wolves offensive zone.As in previous games special teams played a key roll in the win, with the Wolves taking one of their three power plays...

Bulls? Playoffs? Seriously?
2010-04-15 07:06:00 Ok... Don't get me wrong here, it is somewhat of an accomplishment that the Chicago Bulls have officially qualified for the 2010 NBA Playoffs. With some inspired play over the last two weeks of the season, the Bulls managed to win their way to the eight seed in the Eastern Conference. Congrats to Vinny Del Negro and his cast of players. But this is the problem I have with the NBA.
Top Ten Reasons Why the Bulls Won't Make the Playoffs
2010-04-13 05:36:00 By this time tomorrow the Bulls could conceivably clinch a spot in the playoffs, in which I'll happily eat my crow and root like hell for the Bulls against LeBron James and the Cavaliers. But I have to say that I'm more than pessimistic about their chances at making it to the postseason. Why you ask? Here are the Top Ten Reasons. ...
Keith puts golden reputation on the line, needs his first great playoffs
2010-04-12 19:39:00 He gets a lot of praise, and rightfully so. He likely will be proclaimed this summer as the National Hockey League's best defenseman when he is awarded the Norris Trophy. And it will all ring hollow unless Duncan Keith makes a name for himself in a single postseason, an honor he has yet to come close to capturing. The Hawks' leader in ice time has to be a leader in crunch time. There is intense pressure on Keith to prove that he can respond in the playoffs for a very simple reason. He has never done it to anyone's satisfaction before, certainly not even his own, and at 26 years of age his time has come to be the difference...

Chicago has the blues as Hawks tumble toward the playoffs with another loss
2010-03-31 05:12:00 If Joel Quenneville doesn't believe in the structure that has made the Blackhawks one of the NHL's best teams, then who am I to argue. Let's tear it all down and start over. We may as well shake up all the names in a dice cup before the rest of the games and see whether Dustin Byfuglien is our new first-line winger or perhaps our No. 1 goalie. As far as I can decipher, it has become nothing but a crapshoot, anyway, after their Titanic collapse continued with Tuesday night's 4-2 loss in St. Louis. As long as the Hawks keep losing, they are lulling their first-round opponent into believing a best-of-seven upset against Chicago won't be that difficult a challenge at all. The Hawks...
A hunch says playoffs will cure ailing Blackhawks
2010-03-22 03:02:00 The past two weeks of Chicago Blackhawks hockey will either be the foreshadowing to another cupless summer or a forgettable stumble in an otherwise unforgettable run to glory for the Original Six franchise. I don't pretend to know the answer, but the past seven games could hold some clues. Starting with a 5-4 home ice loss to the rival Detroit Red Wings on March 7, the Blackhawks are 2-3-2 over the past two weeks concluding with Saturday night's 5-4 shootout loss against the streaking Phoenix Coyotes. The bookend defeats are two of only four games the Blackhawks have lost all season when scoring four or more goals. The others were a late-December 5-4 regulation road loss to the Dallas... |
