"Imaginary blogs with real poets in them." (Sunday's Poem 13)
2009-04-19 15:10:00 Poetry by Marianne Moore I, too, dislike it: there are things that are important beyondall this fiddle.Reading it, however, with a perfect contempt for it, onediscovers init after all, a place for the genuine.Hands that can grasp, eyesthat can dilate, hair that can riseif it must, these things are important not because ahigh-sounding interpretation can be put upon them but becausethey areuseful. When they become so derivative as to becomeunintelligible, the same thing may be said for all of us, that wedo not admire whatwe cannot understand: the batholding on upside down or in quest of something toeat, elephants pushing, a wild horse taking a roll, a tirelesswolf undera tree, the immovable critic twitching his skin like a horsethat feels a flea, the base-ball fan, the statistician--nor is it validto discriminate against "business documents andschool-books"; all these phenomena are important. C.H. Connors and Other Smith College Poets
2008-04-25 21:02:00 Earlier this week, the Poetry Center at Smith College celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2008 with readings by alumnae from the past 60 years. Poems by the participants and other Smith graduates are featured on this web page. Carolyn Connors '60, who publishes her poetry online at www.chconnors.com, has kindly permitted me to reprint her poem "A Glory from the Earth", which she read at the gala. Great poets series: Zauq and his Urdu poetry
2008-04-21 12:01:00 laaii hayaat aaye, qazaa le chalii chaleapnii khushii na aaye na apnii khushii chale[hayaat=life, qazaa=death]Sheikh Ibrahim Zauq (1789-1854) is among the classical masters of Urdu poetry whose couplets are oft-quoted in conversation and in writing, more than 150 years after his death. Zauq is known for his absolute command on the language. Yet his poetry is simple and straight. For almost half-a-century, he remained associated with the Qila-e-Mualla (Royal Fort). Bahadur Shah Zafar was his disciple in poetry. In his life, Zauq was considered the greatest poet of the era, the Khaqaani of India.Zauq was a contemporary of poets of the calibre of Ghalib and Momin in the golden age of Urdu poetry. But not even a single collection of his poetry could be published during his liftetime. He passed away in 1854. In a way, he was fortunate that he didn't see his beloved Delhi getting ravaged by the British after the struggle of 1857.Selected couplets of Zauq:ab to ghabraa ke ye kahte haiN ki...

Poets? Weather: James Dickey and Mark Twain
2008-04-14 15:33:00 photo by www.moonraker.com A poet is someone who stands outside in the rain hoping to be struck by lightning. —James Dickey From the length of the bibligraphy of his poetic works, we can surmise that Mr. Dickey was frequently struck by metaphoric lightning. Poets' liquor
2008-03-04 13:30:00 Important: don't forget to check: Help beat sarcomaPoets' liquor is back on the shelves. I 'm talking about absinthe, the beautiful and ever-changing green color alcohol beverage that was very popular back in the 19th century.Painters, poets and writers were looking for inspiration with help of Absinthe fairy lady.Absinthe by Degas:The liquor was banned and surrounded by a lot of beliefs. It's supposed to be mysterious and addictive and mind blinder, but today with modern techniques the liquor is safe to drink -in moderation, but like any alcoholic beverages. What I really like is all the ceremonials around and the vintage touch of it. You need to have a special spoon and it's better to have the right glass and a little water fountain. You put the spoon on top of the glass with a sugar on it. You pour slowly water to the absinthe through the sugar. The liquid will change color.Oscar Wilde was an absinthe drinker and once said:“Absinthe has a wonderful colour, green. A glass of...

Bennington, Vermont: Big Monuments, Poets & Bad Wine
2007-12-11 13:18:00 Here is the final installment of our vacation to New England that Roberto and I took in October. Amazing how time flies! One of our other stops during our New England trip was in Bennington Vermont, visiting our friends Nicki and Lisa (you will remember them from our Ft. Lauderdale trip although we all had slightly different hair at that point?.). When in Bennington you must go to The Bennington Battle Monument. The monument was built in the 1880?s at the same location in 1777 during the war of independence, that the American colonists maintained a store of weapons and food, which the British knew was critical to capture in order to restock their own troops. Besides the history the Bennington Monument is a great place to look out over Bennington and see the landscape which at this time of year which included many beautifully colored trees. You get to the top of the monument by going up in an elevator. It is cold up there so be sure to bring a jacket. Another must see outdoor mon...
