Kanda Poha
2008-04-16 01:20:00
For many Puneites or Maharashtrians, a Poha Program is a running joke and for some a pretty hair- raising experience. For the non-Maharashtrians, a poha program is when a boy of marriageable age goes to a girl's house for the purpose of an arranged marriage with the decision makers of his family. Decision maker in this case may or may not include the two parties actually getting hitched. The meeting usually takes place in the evening hours. Somewhere around tea time, but much before dinner time. The most popular dish that is served at this time is Kanda Pohe. Very quick and easy to make, and really hard to screw up. And no matter who makes the Poha, it is always passed off as a shining example of the bride-to-be's many special talents. As for those of you guys who fell in love without first testing the poha-power of your bride to be, you can still fix a decent plate for yourselves. Here's how:Ingredients:3 cups Thick Poha1 large White Onion finely chopped1 Potato cut into small p...

To Pohang and Back
2007-08-05 07:44:00
Yesterday Rob and I went to Pohang, for the purpose of attending the final weekend of the Pohang International Fireworks Festival. We decided to leave fairly early, in order to see the sights of Pohang. We took the train there. (The train to Pohang passes through the fields I explored the other day!) In front of us was seated a girl of about six. She seemed to take great pleasure in turning around and staring at us. At one point she even stared at us while growling. It was a little weird, and quite amusing. I was pretty well convinced that this little kid did not like foreigners, when she turned around and offered us candy. We each received a butterscotch and a ginseng candy. Now, I am actually a fan of this ginseng hard candy, although the taste is rather bizarre. I sucked on it for a good ten minutes or so and then crunched up the rest and said audibly and with great pleasure, "Ahh, ginseng" - and then somehow in the next breath, I managed to inhale a chunk. Whoops. So there I was,...

this weekend a gang of gimhaens descended upon the city of Pohang. i was among them. a couple of canucks from here were playing in a hockey game so we went to cheer them on. apparently it worked because they played much better than they did here in gimhae. (i wasn't there, so that's based purely on what i heard.)a street in pohangwe caught the bus around noon and arrived about two hours later. we checked into a motel and headed for an orphanage where kim worked a few years ago. having grown up in the 80's i always get this picture of the poor little orphan annie in my head; children in rags, scrubbing the floors and being beaten when they are bad... but it wasn't anything like that at all.the valentine motel... our little love nest!!!the kids were fascinated with the waegooks - going so far as to measure nose and leg hair lengths of the boys -- which was hilarious! they were sweet and fun. the orphanage is set up with different "apartments" - each one has about ten kids and one ...
