VPOD: Poiret: King of Fashion
2007-05-08 16:31:00 Paul Poiret called himself the "King of Fashion" and supported his claim with remarkable opulence in his clothing, a new silhouette and construction techniques based more on draping than tailoring, and a high degree of elegance seldom seen today.A former pupil of Charles Worth and Jacques Doucet, he was the first designer to exhibit his Parisian collections here in the USA. Unfortunately his success lasted only until the First World War. Called to serve in the French army, he closed his house during the war. When it re-opened, the fashion climate had radically changed in a way that was catastrophic for this designer--he died penniless in 1947.A special salute to Paul Poiret's technical ingenuity and originality begins tomorrow at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and continues through August 1 in the Special Exhibitions Gallery, First Floor. It's a not-to-be-missed fashion exhibit for a vintage fashionista!(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and pu...
"Poiret: King of Fashion" Costume Institute Gala
2007-05-08 05:43:00 Lucy Liu is wearing this BEAUTIFUL Zac Posen Fall 2007 gown. I am not sure about the Wonder Woman accessories though. This was a great colour choice for Lara Spencer.Cate Blanchet...mmm. It's just OK and I am clutching at straws here. I hate to diss my style queen, but I don't like the earrings or the hair. Of course she is wearing Balenciaga. The one person I was relying on to take a risk was Chloe Sevigny. Girlfriend let me down. She is better than this boring Balenciaga dress. She normally always has her hair back. On this occasion she set it free, but did nothing with it.Eva Mendes has a face like thunder, but this does not detract from her beautiful jacquard dress. The earrings were just one step to far for Cameron Diaz. The kooky necklace I would have allowed on its own. Together...NO.The dress is beautiful and is by Christian Dior and was also seen on best mate Drew Barrymore a few weeks ago. What a risk that paid off. It looks like a dress Princess Leia would have worn, but I l...

Fashion History: Paul Poiret
2007-01-14 02:29:00 Born in 1879, Paul Poiret was a couturier based in Paris before the First World War, during the Belle Epoque. He was taken on by the fashion designer Jacques Doucet as a draughtsman. When he completed his apprenticeship with the House of Worth in 1904 he opened up his own fashion house, and by 1907 had produced a revolutionary style. Poiret was the first designer to break away from the soft shades of the late Edwardian style and use vibrant primary colours. "It was," he declared, in My Fifty First Years "in the name of Liberty that I proclaimed the fall of the corset and the adoption of the brassiere which, since then, has won the day. Yes, I freed the bust, but I shackled the legs." This , of course, is a reference to his creation of the 'hobble' skirt. He also was famous for designing luxurious oriental and Art Deco gowns. He was the first couturier to launch his own perfume (named Rosine after his eldest daughter) and he also launched the suspender belt, flesh-coloured stocking...
