WHO Says US/NZ Drug Policies "a failure' ?
2008-07-15 22:17:00 The World Health Organization Documents Failure of U.S. Drug PoliciesTuesday, July 8th, 2008 / By Bruce Mirken The United States has some of the world's most punitive drug policies and has led the cheering section for tough "war on drugs" policies worldwide, but a new international study suggests that those policies have been a crashing failure. A World Health Organization survey of 17 countries, conducted by some of the world's leading substance abuse researchers, found that we have the highest rates of marijuana and cocaine use. The numbers are startling. In the United States, 42.4 percent admitted having used marijuana. The only other nation that came close was New Zealand, another bastion of get-tough policies, at 41.9 percent. No one else was even close. (more)So? Whats new about this unremarkable fact? Could it be that the "MethCon's" and "Kiwi Party" think we can incarcerate our way to a drug free society. Perhaps the media might have liked to print the following attribut...

2008-04-20 05:16:00 Singapore PAP Forum to delve into issues surrounding national policies By Dominque Loh, SINGAPORE: The third People’s Action Party Policy Forum council wants to dig deeper into issues surrounding national policies. It’s their job to raise issues faced at the ground level and help people understand how policies are shaped. Mr Singh said: “What we want to improve is focus groups. Bringing them together and then ask those who are passionate about certain things like transport, healthcare, education. Canadian Jewish dissenters criticize Israeli policies
2008-04-13 00:58:00 Under Stephen Harper, the Canadian government has shown a more pronounced pro-Israel position, or perhaps "bias" might be the better term.In response to the recent Israeli incursions in Gaza, thirty three member countries in the 47-seat UN Human Rights Council endorsed a resolution that accused Israel of war crimes in Gaza. Nations that favored censuring Israel included China, India and Russia. Thirteen nations abstained.Despite the overwhelming military force used in Gaza that resulted in 120 deaths, including children and non-combatants, one nation stood out against condemnation of Israel - and that nation was Canada. In the recent past the Canadian position has at times been even more unabashedly pro-Israel than the United States itself. Condoleezza Rice condemned continued housing construction in East Jerusalem on land annexed in 1967. By contrast, Canadian Foreign Affairs minister, Maxime Bernier, refused to condemn Israeli settlement activity in East Jerusalem. The pro-Israel ...

New Bonus 2008 for NTUC INCOME policies
2008-03-31 19:09:00 NTUC INCOME just declared changes on its policies in bonuses payout. Total payout on bonuses to public is still the same so not to worry. The positive thing is to watch out for possible higher bonuses payout to all the ntuc income policyholders. Annuities before 1993 have no changes also. Protection Life Policy = Sum Assured + Annual Bonus + Special Bonus Total Bonus = Annual Bonus + Special Bonus 1. The total bonus package remains unchanged as the increase in special bonus offsets the lower annual bonuses. 2. Annual Bonuses (or Reversionary Bonuses) means x% on sum assured and y% on sum assured. eg. this year 2.5%@2.75% of $100K sum assured for our VIVOLIFE means ($100k sum assured x 2.6% + accumulated bonus of $20K x 2.1%) 3. Special bonuses are payable on death, maturities and surrenders. The new structure helps the company to invest more freely for higher eventual returns thus in long runs, the bonuses or higher returns will be given back to policyholders. 4. For Annuities ho...

However that post dealt with initiating a new policy specifically for charitable giving. It is also possible to donate an existing life insurance policy that was originally purchased for other reasons. As you get older and your assets grow, eventually you might reach a point in life where you are self-insured or otherwise no longer have a need for life insurance. Some people will cancel any existing policies while others will continue paying the premiums since it may be more beneficial to do so.If you are considering cancelling any existing policies, note that another option exists: you can donate this policy to your favourite charity. Car Insurance - Specialist Policies
2008-03-21 02:25:00 Young Drivers Probably the most common form of specialist insurance is policies designed specifically for young drivers. As those new to the road are more likely to have an accident, they are considered a higher risk, which is reflected in higher insurance premiums.Generally anyone under 25 years old will fall into this category, there are however, a number of insurers who cater for such individuals.Essentially, policies from these providers are stripped of all the "frills" such as no claims bonuses, smaller excesses, replacement cars etc. Doing this allows the insurer to offer a policy with much lower premiums.Women Equally as popular but fundamentally the opposite of young drivers insurance, is insurance for women. Statistically, women are responsible for less road accidents and drive slower when compared to their male counterparts. For this reason, they cost insurers less and these savings are passed on in the form of lower premiums. The biggest savings are seen in people in the u...
Cluster Munitions: Putting impacts (and policies) in context
2008-03-19 11:41:00 On 15 February 2008, the American Department of State distributed a White Paper entitled 'Putting the Impact of Cluster Munitions in Context with the Effects of All Explosive Remnants of War'. In some respects, this document elaborated on U.S. statements in the UN Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) process in June and November 2007.The U.S. document raised many issues, and represented a view contrasting with those of some others on effectively addressing the humanitarian impacts of cluster munitions. We're aware that it's generated considerable discussion, both publicly and in humanitarian demining and arms control circles. To that end, we wanted to bring the U.S. White Paper to the attention of our readers and, in the spirit of constructive debate, to invite your comments. We've reproduced the White Paper text (which is in the public domain) in its entirety below for your reference. Where the original text indicated web-links, we've activated these as hyperlinks...
Israel’s Failed Policies In Gaza Aid Hamas
2008-03-18 08:09:00 Israel hard liners like Defense Minister Ehud Barak have been aruging for years the only way to end violence is to be more violent than your opponents. Israel has embarked on a policy of assassinations and killings of Hamas leaders in order to destroy its popularity among Gazans. A new survey by the West Bank based Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, shows if new presidential elections were held, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh would receive 47% of the vote compared with 46% for President Abbas. Several months ago, President Abbas had a clear majority of the votes. The survey also discovered Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti, who has been imprisoned, would defeat Haniyeh by 57% to 38%. There is no evidence any of Israel’s military solutions have been successful other than providing some Israelis satisfaction that murderers have been killed. The military solution does not work. Marwan Barghouti was responsible for the deaths of Israelis, but there is a strong possibilit...
