2012-01-25 23:38:00
Earlier today, NASCAR issued a statement on how fines will be disclosed to the public beginning this season: NASCAR will no longer issue fines that are undisclosed. We looked at this issue from every angle and gathered feedback from the industry. While there are always sensitivities related to sponsor relationships and other leagues may continue issuing disclosed and undisclosed fines, NASCAR has decided that all fines moving forward will be made public after the competitor or organization that has been penalized has been informed. (Read Statement at NASCAR.com)As a NASCAR fan, I have seen this sport change over the years from its stars to its policies and while the "Boy's Have at it" policy hasn't changed that let's drivers wreck each other at will if they see fit, at least NASCAR is making the effect to make changes as needed in the sport and today's statement that NASCAR will now publicly disclose fines in 2012 is a good step forward. Basically as one NASCAR fan commented o...

The National Electronics Policy 2011: Big Boost For Indian Mobile Devices M
2011-12-12 10:59:00
The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology had opened a dialogue in October 2011 regarding the National Electronics Policy 2011. The suggestions provided by various stakeholders have been taken into consideration and changes have been incorporated in the policy with a view to improve it. The primary aim of this policy was to boost the revenue and share in the global market of products developed by Indian manufacturers. The policy not only plans to provide fiscal incentives to bridge the infrastructure gaps but also hopes to ease the pressure created on manufacturers by the high cost of finance. Experts have expressed certain concerns about the viability of the policy. There are concerns that some of the stipulations in the policy may not be in accordance with the Direct Taxes Code Bill, 2010 and the General Agreement on Tariff and Trade, which dictates India’s international commitments. I won’t get into the nitty-gritties of these concerns and rather concentrate ...

New Telecom Policy To Ease Tensions: Say Bye Bye To Roaming
2011-11-23 07:37:00
Telecom companies have a reason to smile. A New Telecom Policy (NTP) expected to be launched early next year will introduce a pan-India mobile permit, doing away with the existing system of having 22-individual region-specific permits. Thus, the concept of roaming will disappear. Though this policy will resolve the controversy surrounding 3G roaming deals that mobile phone companies have signed amongst themselves, what will happen to these agreements which the Government of India declared as “illegal” is not known. Just last week, TRAI & other departments had said that 3G roaming deals among mobile phone companies violated license rules. Subsequently Airtel lashed out & its offices along-with Vodafone’s got raided. Coincidence? In an amazing display of unity, the heads of three top mobile phone operators -Sunil Mittal, Chairman & Group CEO, Airtel; Vittorio Colao, Group CEO, Vodafone; and Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman, Aditya Birla Group (Idea Cellular)- have ask...

Airtel Furious Over Govt’s 3G Policy Changes
2011-11-22 07:00:00
World’s 5 largest telecom operator, Bharti Airtel, lashed out at the Government of India for its sloppy handling & frequent penalties on the 3G service agreements between Mobile operators. What many companies felt privately, Airtel has come out & said openly that frequent penalties were imposed & that too opaquely, by the telecoms sectors for granting 3G access to subscribers while roaming. Companies like Vodafone & Idea have already signed such agreements (& got notices served) between themselves to allow one operator to roam on other’s 3G networks, where they do not own 3G permits or licenses. Till date, the ministry has collected more than Rs. 300 Crores in penalties. Sanjay Kapoor, CEO for India and South Asia for Bharti Airtel, shared that the ongoing confusion over the 3G roaming deals was likely to affect investors’ confidence in the sector and frequent changes in policy were not helping anyone. “We have lived through tough times, whether ...

Yesterday, on one of my favorite consumer websites, the Consumerist.com, the site ran the follow up to an interesting article called ?Sprint Won?t Take Back My Unwanted iPhone 4S? with an article called ?Update: Sprint Is Still Giving Me The iPhone Run Around? where a Sprint customer learns the hard way that they need to check the return policy before buying in this case an iPhone. You see, a Sprint customer bought the new iPhone 4S online at Sprint.com, but decided that he didn?t want the phone anymore and tried to return the phone to only find out that he was outside of the 14-day return policy and this is where thing got interesting.According to the article: ?I was planning on returning it Thursday (10/27), but ended up staying late unexpectedly at the hospital where I work as a doctor in the ICU.Then, I called Sprint on Friday (10/28), and was told everything was fine, but that I would need to go to a Sprint store to return it. Telecom Policy 2011 Draft Announced; No Roaming Charges, Broadband Limit Do
2011-10-11 10:59:00
Yesterday, Kapil Sibal, Minister for Telecommunications and IT released the draft of the National Telecommunications Policy – 2011. In it are some lofty aims. For instance, by 2020, 100% tele-density is aimed at. Also, by 2015, they aim to provide ‘affordable and reliable broadband’ by 2015. In the new Telecom Policy, the One Nation, One License Policy was brought up. By this, there will be no difference between Local and STD Calls. This also means that there will be no roaming charges while in India. Also, they admitted that MNP is currently not complete, as people cannot keep their number while moving to a different Circle. This too is aimed to be allowed. Mr. Kapil Sibal said, “We will seek TRAI recommendations on license framework under the new Telecom Policy 2011. State operators BSNL and MTNL will continue to play important role in penetration. Mission is to have special coverage of remote and rural areas. The New spectrum act will look into spectrum prici...

National Policy On IT Puts Emphasis On Increasing Connectivity In Rural Ind
2011-09-09 14:15:00
The Indian government seems to have finally woken up from its slumber and taking a serious step towards correcting India’s dismal IT infrastructure. The first National Policy on IT, 2011 is being drawn out at present. India has over 65 million active internet users, which the third highest in the world after China and USA, yet a vast majority of the country either do not have any idea about what internet is all about. The National Policy on IT plans to change all of this. This policy aims to ensure a wider coverage of internet connectivity. If the policy succeeds in its goal, then we will be able to access internet everywhere. Enabling wireless internet access on public transportation is also part of the policy’s first draft. In order to achieve these goals the government first needs to concentrate on improving the country’s IT infrastructure. Many more miles of optical fiber needs to be laid (possibly through a public+private partnership) and the hardware and infrastructure ...

Obama Was Israiled: Killing bin Laden Was Not Foreign Policy Experience For
2011-05-22 17:13:00
-By Warner Todd Huston On Friday Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu schooled President Obama -- who is clearly out of his depth -- on Middle East diplomacy. This would not have been necessary if Obama had not tried to turn decades of American foreign policy on its ear, if he had not turned against our only real Mid East fried, and if he hadn't made to come to the comfort of radical Islamists without conscience who only want to kill Jews and Americans. Obama also proved that just killing bin Laden does not equal foreign policy expertise. Coming off his high after presiding over the end of America's number one enemy, Obama thought he saw an opening to help bin...

Rethinking Our "Meat Before Pudding" Policy
2011-05-03 08:00:00
Address to the students of Islington Green Boarding School, London, England by Headmaster Richard G. Clayworth April 25, 2011 Dearest Students, I stand before you today a changed man, and I trust you'll believe me when I say that things at our lovely little school will never be the same again. I have recently returned from an inspirational conference entitled The Whole Child: Positive Teaching Techniques for the 21st Century And Beyond, and we are here today so I can outline some of the changes that you will notice at school, based on what I learned at the conference.  Yes, you heard correctly:  learned.  Even your teachers and headmasters can learn new things, children.  First things first:  Our "Meat Before Pudding" policy is, as of this moment, officially off the books.  I realized at this conference that the eternal question of "How can you eat your pudding if you don't eat your meat?" has no good answer.  Those signs are being rem...

'Nosy neighbor' foreign policy creates enemies
2011-03-15 14:39:00
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE'Nosy neighbor' foreign policy creates enemiesBURNET, Texas (March 14) - When former President George W. Bush canceled a trip to Geneva for a charity fundraiser because he feared being arrested for war crimes, it was a shame and a blot on our nation, potential Libertarian presidential candidate R. Lee Wrights told the Georgia Libertarian Party State Convention Saturday."It's a shame. It's a blot on this country and it's a blot on all of us that one of our former leaders is afraid to go somewhere because he's going to be charged with war crimes," Wrights said. In February, Bush canceled a speaking engagement at a charity fundraiser in Geneva because a human rights group filed a criminal complaint against him in a Swiss court alleging torture."I'd like to think that if I got the job, you'd never have to worry about that," said Wrights, former Vice Chair of the national Libertarian Party. The incident is an inevitable and direct result of the "nosy neighbor...

City of Chicago Alley Plowing is "Not Policy"

We received the following in an email from our Alderman yesterday, Snow Plowing Update. And yet, as I wrote yesterday (Blizzard 2011-Groundhog Day Edition) the city will give tickets to private plows.
