The New York Times Is Right
2008-07-21 19:32:00
Drudge is reporting that the NY Times has refused to print an editorial by Sen. John McCain in response to one that they published by Sen. Obama less than a week ago. And they’re right not to do so. To post a piece by the blasphemer McCain that speaks ill of the man ...
INK_BLAST | SMALL TOWNS ARE TARGETING UNDOCUMENTED TENANTS
2008-07-21 08:58:00
Many small towns and cities are acting like vigilantes and taking immigration matters into their own hands. Close to 90 municipalities in 27 states have drafted -- and a handful have enacted into law -- ordinances that prohibit landlords from renting to illegal immigrants. Penalties have also been approved, making a national policy issue a harsh economic reality for local tenants. Among the cities that have received national attention for enacting rental bans are Farmers Branch, Texas, Palm Bay, Fla., Valley Park, Mo., Riverside, N.J., and Hazleton, Pa. The rental bans essentially turn landlords into federal immigration officers. Because they are not provided any training or supervision in this area, these landlords may escalate tensions.

Proof that Digg is an important player in American Politics [Digg]
2008-07-17 10:07:00
While there have been many who have debated the role of new media in politics, particularly social networks and bookmarking sites, over the last four weeks a true testament to the power of Digg and related sites was seen in response to a series of actions by Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA). Now, it appears he's paying the price.

?The Truth About??
2008-07-16 00:29:00
The minute I see subject lines that start with ?The Truth About?? I?m immediately skeptical. I saw this post about John McCain on Excons.org and thought I would post my comments here as well: The comments about McCain’s personal life are irrelevant. Whether they are true or not, we?ve all done things we are ...
Collision Politics
2008-07-14 23:48:00
Anwar SyedIT has been strangely quiet on the political front with no report of any significant development, except that the government may be toying with the idea of launching an ?operation? against militants.More worrisome is the fact that not much is even being said. Asif Zardari and Asfandyar Wali Khan may be believers in silence being golden. Nawaz Sharif, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Qazi Hussain Ahmed and Mushahid Hussain were all known for their loquaciousness, but they too seem to have taken to taciturnity. It may be that they have chosen to be non-committal on the overriding issue facing the country (dealing with militants).A few sparks have, however, flown out of an otherwise cool pile of ash. Amin Fahim, still a vice-chairman of the PPP, said recently that the ruling PPP was not the old and real PPP but a new one (new presumably because it is now directed by Mr Zardari), and that he had nothing to do with its governance. On July 3 Mr Zardari removed Abdul Qadir Shaheen, a veter...

Divisive Politics
2008-07-11 18:42:00
-By Thomas E. Brewton Senator Obama’s campaign is based upon a fantasy: his claimed ability to transcend politics-as-usual and thereby to unite the nation for a common purpose. It isn’t just that Senator Obama lacks his claimed power. It’s that the secular religion he represents is entirely antithetical to everything that led to the foundation of ...

Dealing With the Militants
2008-07-07 09:34:00
Anwar SyedPrime Minister Gilani presided over a meeting of ministers and other officials on June 25 to devise ways of subduing the militants, mostly the Taliban, in the NWFP.The Taliban used to be located mainly in our northwestern tribal region, but of late they have spread to other places in the province and the country. They are Islamic fundamentalists, extremists and terrorists. They have two main objectives. First they want to expel American presence and influence from Afghanistan. To this end they attack the American and Afghan government forces in that country. They want the government of Pakistan to dissociate itself from the American campaign against them. Since it will not do so, they regard it as a friend of their enemy and, therefore, an enemy. But their hostility to the state of Pakistan will not cease even if it abandons its American connection. For their second objective is to have Islamic law and morality, as they know them, to be enforced in this country.Islamic law ...

Democrats Try To Tie High Gas Prices To Republicans

Some Democrats from the House will have found themselves a Bush impersonator for a radio ad that tries to blame Republicans for the high price of gas in the country. Really? Facts Stranger Than Fiction
2008-06-29 06:32:00
Anwar SyedThere is the impression in certain quarters that Mr Asif Ali Zardari is running this country, that is, to the extent that any running visible to the naked eye is taking place. This is in spite of the weird fact that he holds no public office, elective or appointive. How did he get to have such a role?He is co-chairman of the PPP, the ruling party at the centre and in Sindh, and a partner in the Punjab government. It may be said that he is therefore entitled to a directive role in governance. Such is not the custom in democracies. Ms Sonia Gandhi in India is president of the ruling Congress party and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh probably consults her on major issues of policy and strategy, but she does not intervene in his government?s day-to-day operations. Mr Zardari?s placement as the PPP?s co-chairman was itself a strange affair. Two days after Benazir?s assassination, he met with members of the party?s central executive committee, who were in Larkana to mourn her death....

Disappointed in Obama

I?m disappointed in Barack Obama?s decision to opt out of public financing in the general election.
