Tossed Polymer Salad
2008-04-09 01:19:00
Marketers througout the years have sought to captialize on the popularity and success of films and TV shows through the utilzation of product-tie ins. At my old ad agency there was an entire division devoted to placing products in shows and arranging agreeements for tie-ins. Hard to believe they pay people money for that. Most tie-ins range from bad to horrible, although I think these are exceptional:For a long time I thought that this represented the worst of the worst in product-tie ins:But now I have found one even worse. Capitalizing on the success of the show and the potential success of the movie set to be released at the end of next month, an enterprising adult toy manufacturer has come up with this:It's Sarah Jessica Porkher in all her scatalogical glory! The fact that the product is itself a really crappy pun makes that much more an effective tie in, considering all the poor writing SATC fans have had to endure at the hands of the aneorexic horseface herself. Even th...

An American-Korean team developed a new method for making wrinkled hard skins on the surface of polymers employing a focused ion beam. By controlling the direction and intensity of the ion beam, they literally carved patterns on flat areas of polydimethylsiloxane, a silicon-based organic polymer (the main ingredient in Silly Putty), by changing direction and ...

Polymer Vision's Readius e-ink phone coming mid-2008 to Italy
2008-02-05 00:00:00
It seemed obvious back in mid-December of last year that Polymer Vision wasn't going to nail its timetable for production versions of the 3G-equipped, e-ink wonder known as the Readius. Now word is that the company will have a commercial version of the phone / e-book reader available sometime in mid-2008 in Italy via Telecom Italia -- provided that everything goes according to its diabolical plans. If you'll recall, the device features a foldable, grayscale, 5-inch QVGA display, and boasts a slew of features, including HSDPA, a 400MHz ARM CPU, and a battery life up to "six times longer" than current mobile phones.

Polymer Clay Jewelry
2008-01-10 17:04:00
Polymer Clay is a pliable, blendable polymer compound for artists and crafters. It isn't real clay, which is fine particles of silicate suspended in water. Polymer Clay is fine particles of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) suspended in a plasticizer, but it can be used like clay. Polymer Clay Cuff BraceletColored and Translucent Polymer Clay collage layered over a metal armaturePolymer Clay comes in dozens of colors, and you can blend them together like paints to make your own colors. The clay's pliability and ductility allow you to use techniques from glasswork, textile arts, and sculpture. It doesn't dry out, so you can sculpt and form it without worrying about a time limit. The firing process that fuses the particles into a solid requires only low temperatures, low enough to use your own oven. No expensive kilns to buy. Polymer Clay JewelryWhen fired, the clay gets hard enough to make it extremely durable, and it can be finished in various ways to obtain textures from glassy to stone...
Mokume Gane in Polymer Clay
2008-01-05 20:35:00
Mokume Gane is a Japanese metalsmithing technique in which thin layers of metal are fused together and manipulated to create beautiful patterns that resemble the grain of wood. It involves using extreme heat and pressure to mix and twist the metals to form swirl patterns?very intense, requiring heavy-duty equipment.Lindly Haunani's Polymer Clay Silver Leaf Technique Mokume Gane HeartsIn polymer clay terms, mokume gane is a method of stacking, layering, and laminating sheets of polymer clay together, and distorting them to create intricate patterns. This is the process:Sheets of clay and sometimes other materials, like metallic foils, are stacked. The stack is rolled through pasta machine, thinning the layers. This sheet is then cut and stacked to make a loaf. The loaf is stamped and manipulated with various tools and processes to distort the patterns in the layers.Thin slices are shaved off the loaf with a sharp blade.Mokume Gane Patterns in Polymer ClayMokume Gane PendantExcellent Po...

Polymer Clay Bead Beauty
2007-12-22 00:35:00
Lori Mendelhall makes beautiful polymer beads. As a lover of beads but a complete ingenue, I am struck with the glorious, swirling colors as well as Lori's whimsical shapes, like this abstract heart above. The smooth, chunky feel of this bead along with the integral copper bale (read: hook for the chain) make it not only a treat for the eyes, but for the hands as well. Her beads are like a big yummy piece of candy...only unlike a sticky candy necklace or lolipop, they last! Lori is a New Yorker moved-to-Cali who began making clay beads about three years ago. Intrigued with the process, she's found two techniques that she particularly loves: the Japanese technique of mokume gane (which deserves its own post, gentle readers) and swirling. She lauds the latter, saying: "It's quite simple yet the results are fabulous. It all begins by creating a small ball of clay comprised of two or more colors. Complicated cane slices can be added for extra interest. The ball is then r...

Polymer solar panels that are cheaper, lighter and greener
2007-12-01 03:09:00
Don't run yet! I'm the first who would like to cover my car with film and get it powered to run on photovoltaic energy, but that option isn't hear yet. New research could make it a little bit closer, though. Physicist Neil Greenham from Cambridge University's Cavendish Laboratory had been researching polymer light emitting diodes (LEDs), used for displays in some televisions, MP3 players and mobile phones. But then he joined a research group trying to use similar polymers to generate electricity from light. Now, his work has resulted an organic solar cell that doesn't use expensive silicon. Silicon-made photovoltaic panels are expensive, heavy and not very green to make. Nevertheless, this technology has a drawback: very low efficiency. While state-of-the-art silicon panels can yield 40 percent efficiency, commercially available panels usually get about 15 percent. Greenham's target is 5 percent, which could power many types of devices with a cheaper cost. To make things more ...

Polymers International Ltd Makes Final Appeal To Bahamas Government To Sign
2007-10-28 00:14:00
Freeport's Polymers wants government to sign onto Euro trade deal: By MINDELL SMALL, Guardian Senior Reporter - Nassau, Bahamas: Polymers International Ltd is making one last appeal to the government to sign on to the new Economic Partnership Agreement with Europe (EPA) — an effort to protect an estimated 15 percent of profits generated from that continent. CEO of the Grand Bahama-based company Greg Ebelhar said the proposed EPA, now heading toward settlement, is of significant importance to the plant's future success. "We have the potential for losing about 10 to 15 percent of our business because it would make us non-competitive with Dart Container Corporation, the company that we compete with out of the US for business that's in the UK," Ebelhar said in an interview with The Guardian yesterday. The EPA is aimed at replacing the Cotonou Agreement, which expires on December 31. That unilateral pact grants trade preferences to former European colonies in Africa, the Car...

Lithium polymer (Li-Po) replacement, the Nanotube battery
2007-09-29 06:06:00
Everyone agree that battery is the most important part of our digital devices? I think you do. Well, to agreed or not you still have to accept that our devices needs battery to live. Now let’s take a look at the battery we use right now, most of it shaped like this picture on the right, just for the record that picture is a Li-Poly battery for Motorola mobile. It is usually need at least an hour to be fully charged, a couple hours sometimes. Now, do you ever wish you could charge your cellphone or laptop in a few seconds rather than hours? Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T) are developing a battery that could do just that, and also might never need to be replaced. As our portable devices get more high-tech, the batteries that power them can seem to lag behind. But Joel Schindall and his team at M.I.T plan to make long charge times and expensive replacements a thing of the past–by improving on technology from the past. They turned to the capa...
