Chevy Aveo-based Pontiac G3 set for U.S. sales Pontiac may have been on its way to regaining the title of General Motors' performance division with the launch of the first-ever G8, but the brand will take two steps back by offering an all-new model for the 2009 model year — dubbed the G3 — that will be based on the Chevrolet Aveo. The EPA quietly approved the G3 for sale in the U.S., even surprising some Pontiac executives with the news over the Memorial Day holiday. The G3 is currently sold in Mexico and Canada, although it is marketed as the Wave in Canada. General Motors group vice president Nick Reilly was recently in Melbourne, Australia for Holden's quarterly strategy meeting and revealed some interesting possibilities for the future of the Holden Commodore — including diesel and hybrid powerplants. Pontiac considering G8 GXP coupe Pontiac's G8 line-up may just grow to include a high-performance coupe which bears the GXP go-fast moniker shared with the GXP sedan. This would include much of the same hardware, including the 402-horsepower Corvette-sourced V8 and six-speed manual transmission, and give Pontiac the firepower to compete with the Ford Mustang GT500KR and Dodge Challenger SRT8. GM is reported to be having an internal conflict on whether or not to build a G8 coupe, which would be based on the recent Holden Coupe 60 concept car shown off at Australia's Melbourne auto show earlier this year. If it gets the green light for production, the coupe would be available for sale within three years, according to Inside Line. Main reasons for not building a G8 coupe include the looming stiff CAFE standards, stringent emissions limits and ever increasing gas costs. UAW stike at American Axle now threatening Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 production In the never ending saga that is the UAW versus American Axle, it appears as though the strike is threatening yet another General Motors plant. This time the strike is threatening to halt production of two of GM's best sellers — the all-new Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6. According to Automotive News, American Axle supplies GM with rear-suspension parts for both vehicles. At the current rate of production, GM will run out of parts to make the Malibu and G6 in about two weeks. The Malibu is made at GM's Orion and Fairfax assembly plants, and the G6 is made at the Orion plant. The strike has already forced GM to close seven light-duty truck plants, one passenger car facility and several other parts plants. In of the latest video commercials, Pontiac takes a stab at BMW 5 Series. In this particular video, Pontiac is trying to convince the people that their latest G8 GT model is a better buy, from a price and speed point of view. The Pontiac G8 GT has a base price of $30,000, while the luxurious, but slower, 5 Series starts at $58,500. I have to agree, the video is hilarious and I aplaud Pontiac's marketing department for coming up with this. But, there is no way I would believe the G8 is a better car than the 550i for example.  Look at the engine, the german manufacturer managed to squeeze out 360 ponies from their V8 4.8L, while the american automaker managed to the same horsepower, but from a 6.L engine. I know that I am little biased and that this is a BMW Blog, but either way, I still have more confidence in the fine german engineering.
