Antillectual-Waves 7" (Square of Oppositon) review

I'm late jumping on this, as it came out this past summer specifically for a US tour the band did. Antillectual are from the Netherlands, but you'd never guess it from listening to them. The music sounds very West Coast US. It's pretty melodic and poppy (but still fast and edgy) punk rock. These guys are probably more kids who grew up on Fat Wreck Chords stuff in the 90s and then got more overtly political and pissed off as they got into darker stuff. Think of the angry elements of Propaghandi with the more melodic elements of Strike Anywhere and you'll be somewhere close to imagining what these guys sound like. The guitar-work is great, lots of cool riffs and interesting changes. Actually, the musicianship is pretty good all across the board, and the song structures are all pretty unique and well thought out. Some of the vocals are a little annoying, as the singer gets into the whole nasely thing from time to time, which takes away from the otherwise catchy melodies he's singi...

I caught these guys a few months ago in Midlothian and thoroughly enjoyed their set. A couple of weeks ago, my wife was at a show and got this CD for free, so she gave it to me. It's been out for a few months, but whatever. The first two songs on this record are totally boring/generic. Now that that's out of the way, the rest of the album is actually pretty good. On a whole, the record is poppy rock with a punk edge that woudn't have been out of place on the Epitaph roster in the mid-90s. The main thing that sets these guys apart is the singer, who can fucking sing and shows it off. I could totally see this dude fronting some Misfits rip-off band and being one of the only guys who could actually pull it off. The guitar-work is good, and the guitar riffs on some of the faster material reminds me of the Japanese pop-punk band Nicotine. Fue pasada por primera vez el 16 de Noviembre del 2006 en Indianapolis en la radio 93.1, y filtrada en Internet tiempo despues. Fue interpretada oficialmente el 21 de Noviembre en los American Music Awards. La canción tiene un sonido disco/rock con un estribillo estilo pop-punk .El titulo oficial para la canción omite la palabra "goddamn" que está entre "an" y "Arms Race" durante la canción.
