2007-12-02 16:44:00 I'm only mentioning this because it is a milestone for my pop culture generation, but Friday marked the 25th anniversary release of the album Thriller. Why was a record that featured clearly a Halloween-themed song released less than a month before Christmas? I loathe Michael Jackson so much that I couldn't bear to post his picture on my blog, and I can't believe how many girls in my age range had a crush on him when this album came out. He was already so creepy to me - the soft-spoken, effiminate voice, the one glove, Neverland Ranch, etc. You mean no one else could see back then that this was a freak in the making? And while I will admit the album had some good songs on it, the only one I really liked was "The Girl is Mine" - because it was a duet with Paul McCartney. And here?s the latest: pop and rock stars are twice as likely to die early as the rest of us with the highest risk of death occurring during the first few years of fame. Artists who landed in the "All Time Top 1000 Albums? were included in the study and it soon became clear that drugs and alcohol account for about 25 percent of the deaths.

They are also more likely to die within a few years after they become famous. The main cause for this is alcohol and drug use. These findings are to be published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. Led by Mark Bellis, research on 1,050 famous North American and European musicians and singers who were famous between 1956 and 1999 were the basis of the study. Each musician was featured in the All Time Top 1,000 albums that came out in 2000, covering rock, punk, rap, R&B, electronica, and new age artists. These musicians were matched up with the rest of the population in terms of age, sex, ethnicity, and nationality until 2005. They found that 100 stars died early between 1956 and 2005.
