The Martyrdom of Pope Saint Fabian
2011-01-18 22:57:00 The martyr Pope Fabian is mentioned in Eusebius Pamphilius: Church History, (263 - 339). Fabian was a layman when elected Pope. Eusebius writes: "1. Gordianus succeeded Maximinus as Roman emperor and Pontianus, who had been bishop of the church at Rome for six years, was succeeded by Anteros. After he had held the office for a month, Fabianus succeeded him 2. They say that Fabianus having come, after the death of Anteros, with others from the country, was staying at Rome, and that while there he was chosen to the office through a most wonderful manifestation of divine and heavenly grace. 3. For when all the brethren had assembled to select by vote him who should succeed to the episcopate of the church, several renowned and honorable men were in the minds of many, but Fabianus, although present, was in the mind of none. But they relate that suddenly a dove flying down lighted on his head, resembling the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Saviour in the form of a dove. 4. Thereup...
Pope Benedict Talks Baby Names
2011-01-17 21:21:00 Pope Benedict XVI mentioned baby names over the weekend. Well, maybe not baby names–baptismal names is more precise. In any case, here’s what he said while baptizing a 21 infants in the Sistine Chapel on Sunday: Every baptism should ensure that the child is given a Christian name, an unmistakable sign that the Holy Spirit ...
Blessed Pope John Paul II
2011-01-14 23:20:00 A communiqué from the Congregation for Saints' Causes announced that today the Pope, in an audience with the congregation's prefect, Cardinal Angelo Amato, "authorized the dicastery to promulgate the decree of the miracle attributed to the intercession of Venerable Servant of God John Paul II (Karol Wojtyla)." This was the final step in the process preceding the beatification rite, which will be celebrated on Divine Mercy Sunday, a feast day instituted by John Paul II He died on the night of Saturday, April 2, 2005, precisely the vigil of the Second Sunday of Easter was celebrated, and many observed the unique coincidence, which brought together a Marian dimension -- the first Saturday of the month -- and that of Divine Mercyhttp://feeds.feedburner.co-m/blogspot/Uocyk
Pope speaks about plight of Christians in Pakistan
2011-01-10 23:40:00 In Pakistan, last July, two Christian brothers accused under the law of writing a blasphemous letter against Muhammad, the founder of Islam, were gunned down outside a Pakistani court. In 2005, another Christian accused of blasphemy was beaten to death in a prison hospital by a guard wielding a hammer. In November 2010, a Christian mother of four was sentenced to death under the law, a case that has sparked wide international protest. In early December, a pro-Taliban Pakistani cleric offered a reward of $5,800 to anyone who kills the woman in prison, angered by attempts of the local governor to save her life The governor of Punjab, Salman Taseer, spoke out forcefully for clemency for the Christian woman The governor was slain Many Pakistanis have come out in support of the governor's killer since the assassination nearly a week ago. Crowds showered him with rose petals and shouted supportive slogans during court appearances Yesterday tens of thousands of Islamists rallied in Pak...

To The Pope: Get With The Times, B!
2010-11-20 20:28:00 While religion can be very beneficial to some people, I believe that it can only be as beneficial as it is applicable to the life of the person it touches. Pope Benedict, if you want Christianity, and especially Catholicism, to remain relevant in the world, you have to come back down to earth, so to speak, get in touch with the people and the issues they're facing, and relate your message to them. Otherwise, you're just preaching to hear yourself preach, and that's annoying.

Viva Alitalia - This is why the pope kisses the ground after a flight
2010-09-14 16:56:00 As part of the series The Flying Fun on The Road, here is an interesting event to further relativate the "Science of Flying". When we landed with an Alitalia Airbus A321 last Sunday, the cabin sound and light installation went completely bezerk for the whole of the 20 minutes we were taxiing to our gate. Both the rhythmic flickering and rapping beat in the speakers made it look and feel like a night at the disco. I imagined one of the flight attendants coming from the back rapping to the... Points To Ponder by Pope John Paul II
2010-07-04 08:13:00 Side note: I rarely write about religion and spirituality; This is one of those rare moments :-) This post was inspired by this Sunday?s sermon by our local priest (yes, I do go to church and actually listen to the sermon! ). The entire sermon revolved around one sentence. It was so intriguing that long after the sermon was over, I was still thinking about it. Naturally, it made in to a blog post! "We have lost the sense of sin" ~ Pope John Paul II It seems this statement is fairly old; nevertheless new to me (have you heard this before?). The "sense of sin" refers to having an accurate conception of sin and an awareness of sin in one's life. It is part of what is normally understood as "conscience." After some digging around in Google, I came across this, John Paul II in "Reconciliatio et Paenitentia" wrote of a "sensitivity and an acute perception of the seeds of death contained in sin, as well as a sensitivity and an acuteness of perception for identifying them in the thou...

Barry Pittard on sex abuses ? Scouts, Nithyananda, Sathya Sai Baba, Pope
2010-04-01 22:37:00 In the current very promising awakening of the public and the media to more and more religious sexual abuse, Barry Pittard draws parallels and comparisons between some of the major cases in the public eye at present. That this phenomenon is not merely found in religious institutions is obvious, but the overwhelming attempt at cover-up ...
Sexual Abuse Priests. What?! The Pope Never Knew?
2010-03-28 01:37:00 Some international commentators opine that there is a net of terrible revelation closing in on Pope Benedict XVI. One revelation after another indicates that he has for many years known about the endemic sexual abuses, both of children and adults, happening within the Roman Catholic Church. And that he has, all along, failed with any probity to act. To the contrary, he has called, along, for secrecy. (I shall shortly turn to the mounting allegations of massive cover up of sexual abuse by the Boy Scout's of America) If any should think that the Vatican has not been for centuries, and is to this day, a heavy hitter in the murky world of realpolitik, they have not paused to read even the standard historical accounts.

Roman Catholics? Deep Concern At Pope?s Apology. But He Is Way Ahead Of Ind
2010-03-23 04:57:00 It is enormously instructive to watch the unfolding saga of papal apology for clergy sexual abuse. Large numbers of both Roman Catholics and others round the world have expressed deep dissatisfaction with the Pope's apology. They say that it goes nowhere far enough, and does not address acute issues of crime and punishment.
Pope on the proper relationship between man and nature
2009-12-16 18:25:00 tweetmeme_url = 'http://www.nelsonguirado.com/i-ndex.php/religion/2009/12/16/po-pe-on-the-proper-relationship-b-etween-man-and-nature';tweetmem-e_service = 'bit.ly';As Anne Applebaum notices and Diane Francis' anti-person screed proves, nature worship leads to a diminution of man's place in the world. It's logical, actually: 1. If desiring nature to be preserved as it is now or restore it to a pre-human state is the greatest good. 2. and, if people are just one creature amongst many, without any more natural worth than nature itself. 3. and, if man is using more than his share of resources or damaging the earth so that 1 is impossible. 4. then, man's power to destroy needs to diminish. We can do this two ways, by reducing the number of people or limiting each person's engagement with nature. Christianity teaches us that man is the ultimate physical creation (angels are spirit) and infinitely more valuable than animals by virtue of our being created in God's image, a...

Pope to visit Britain 2010
2009-09-24 01:06:00 Pope Benedict XVI will visit Britain next year following an invitation from Prime Minister Gordon Brown, a government source said on Wednesday. It would appear that the visit will be a State Visit and not simply a "pastoral visit" as Pope John Paul II conducted many years ago. One hopes that there will be official confirmation of this soon: as well as an idea of his itinerary.
Pope Leo XIII meets two Saints
2009-09-20 21:55:00 Pope Leo XIII in 1898 St Therese describes her attendance at an audience with Pope Leo XIII. She summons up the courage to ask him to intervene to allow her to enter Carmel. Her father, now Blessed, also meets the Holy Father. But one really wants to know what exactly did Pope Leo XIII think of this strange young girl who would not let go of his knee and who was dragged off by the Swiss Guard. "We spent six days in visiting the great wonders in Rome, and on the seventh saw the greatest of all?Leo XIII. I longed for, yet dreaded, that day, for on it depended my vocation. I had received no answer from the Bishop of Bayeux, and so the Holy Father's permission was my one and only hope. But in order to obtain this permission I had first to ask it. The mere thought made me tremble, for I must dare speak to the Pope, and that, in presence of many Cardinals, Archbishops, and Bishops! On Sunday morning, November 20, [1887] we went to the Vatican, and were taken to the Pope's private...

Gaza Disowned: The Pope, Israel and ?Reconciliation?
2009-05-23 02:48:00 By Ramzy Baroud5/21/09?Gaza is not on the Pope?s itinerary, nor will it be. There will be no change in these plans. But I?ll say it very clearly, the Pope is absolutely not going to Gaza.?Such were the astounding comments made by the Pope?s spokesman in Israel, Wadie Abunasser, prior to Pope Benedict XVI visiting Palestine and Israel. As if there was no massacre in Gaza, no families entirely slaughtered, no human rights violated to match the record of the most grisly of crimes in modern history. As if Gaza were a mere irritant in the annals of human suffering. More, as if there were no Catholic flock in Gaza. To clarify, there are actually nearly 2,000 Catholics in Gaza, apparently not important enough for the ?cut?.Now, there are a lot of important religious sites to see around the Holy Land, lots of old churches, stones, ruins and the like?sites of much more significance, such as the Western Wall, the Holy Sepulcher and so on? far more important than visiting the site of a fresh ma...
Let’s Leave the Pope and Prayer Out of It
2009-03-29 15:44:00 I am in Denver this weekend, soaking up the love of my niece and nephew and catching up on all things newsworthy. What’s up with the Pope? Your favorite cross-dresser and mine was in Africa recently telling the AIDS-ravaged continent that condoms won’t really help prevent AIDS. Great. I expect such ramblings from the crazy nun down at the local church, but a world leader? If you listen closely, you can hear frustrated grumbles the world over from doctors and scientists who know better. Hey, Benedict, why not encourage people to smoke, forgo exercise, and stop washing their hands too? Ya douche. I love how religious leaders apply the same logic and reason they used to come to the conclusion that there is an all-powerful boogeyman in the sky who knows what we do with our naughty bits every night to also conclude that educated physicians don’t know shit. In related news, the Brady Center, whose work I admire and support, wants March 30th to be a National Day of ...

Sandra "Pope" Palin Opposes Birth Control
2008-09-09 12:53:00 Whoa. Wackjob Express. Not just for unmarried couples like her teen slut daughter and her young dumb and full of cum boyfriend, but for married couples too. Which I guess is why Sandra Rhythm Method Palin is on her fifth kid right now at age 43, a Down's Syndrome kid she created herself by getting knocked up for no reason once again so late in life and not having the kindness to put the zygote out of its misery and spare taxpayers tons of money via D & C.Her kids obviously don't believe in birth control either. And I guess the Bush Administration doesn't? Seen the latest headlines about the Bushies classifying all birth control as "abortion"? Wow, these people are really a bunch of idiots! Dangerous idiots at that.P.S. Apparently she's flip-flopped on that lately, and now she supports birth control and sex education, but I guess her daughter is too stupid to use it. She's pro-rubbers, but anti-explicit sex education, whatever the Hell that means.

Scripture and the Pope: Part 5

Also see Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4.Pax Christi, phatcatholic - - - - - - - - - -I apologize ahead of time that most my comments are not backed with Scripture at this point. I have made most of those already in previous posts. While I put little stock in my own opinions as compared to the authority of Scripture, I am responding to the best of my ability from a biblical worldview rather than by book, chapter and verse. I have prayed extensively about this, as I consider truth claims no light matter that can be made without great accountability. (To whom much has been given, much is required.)I do think that the lack of Scriptural support is a deficiency in your argumentation. I mean no offense in this at all, but many of your arguments seem to come from your own ideas of what you would like a verse to mean instead of what the context, the original languages, other Scripture passages, and biblical schola... |
