Pope to visit Britain 2010
2009-09-24 01:06:00
Pope Benedict XVI will visit Britain next year following an invitation from Prime Minister Gordon Brown, a government source said on Wednesday. It would appear that the visit will be a State Visit and not simply a "pastoral visit" as Pope John Paul II conducted many years ago. One hopes that there will be official confirmation of this soon: as well as an idea of his itinerary.
Pope Leo XIII meets two Saints
2009-09-20 21:55:00
Pope Leo XIII in 1898 St Therese describes her attendance at an audience with Pope Leo XIII. She summons up the courage to ask him to intervene to allow her to enter Carmel. Her father, now Blessed, also meets the Holy Father. But one really wants to know what exactly did Pope Leo XIII think of this strange young girl who would not let go of his knee and who was dragged off by the Swiss Guard. "We spent six days in visiting the great wonders in Rome, and on the seventh saw the greatest of all?Leo XIII. I longed for, yet dreaded, that day, for on it depended my vocation. I had received no answer from the Bishop of Bayeux, and so the Holy Father's permission was my one and only hope. But in order to obtain this permission I had first to ask it. The mere thought made me tremble, for I must dare speak to the Pope, and that, in presence of many Cardinals, Archbishops, and Bishops! On Sunday morning, November 20, [1887] we went to the Vatican, and were taken to the Pope's private...

Pope says atheists are responsible for global warming
2009-08-29 21:25:00
[From National Secular Society] The Pope has claimed that atheism is responsible for the destruction of the environment. In a speech at the Vatican on Wednesday, Ratzinger said: “Is it not true that inconsiderate use of creation begins where God is marginalized or also where his existence is denied? If the human creature’s relationship with the ...

Gaza Disowned: The Pope, Israel and ?Reconciliation?
2009-05-23 02:48:00
By Ramzy Baroud5/21/09?Gaza is not on the Pope?s itinerary, nor will it be. There will be no change in these plans. But I?ll say it very clearly, the Pope is absolutely not going to Gaza.?Such were the astounding comments made by the Pope?s spokesman in Israel, Wadie Abunasser, prior to Pope Benedict XVI visiting Palestine and Israel. As if there was no massacre in Gaza, no families entirely slaughtered, no human rights violated to match the record of the most grisly of crimes in modern history. As if Gaza were a mere irritant in the annals of human suffering. More, as if there were no Catholic flock in Gaza. To clarify, there are actually nearly 2,000 Catholics in Gaza, apparently not important enough for the ?cut?.Now, there are a lot of important religious sites to see around the Holy Land, lots of old churches, stones, ruins and the like?sites of much more significance, such as the Western Wall, the Holy Sepulcher and so on? far more important than visiting the site of a fresh ma...
Let’s Leave the Pope and Prayer Out of It
2009-03-29 15:44:00
I am in Denver this weekend, soaking up the love of my niece and nephew and catching up on all things newsworthy. What’s up with the Pope? Your favorite cross-dresser and mine was in Africa recently telling the AIDS-ravaged continent that condoms won’t really help prevent AIDS. Great. I expect such ramblings from the crazy nun down at the local church, but a world leader? If you listen closely, you can hear frustrated grumbles the world over from doctors and scientists who know better. Hey, Benedict, why not encourage people to smoke, forgo exercise, and stop washing their hands too? Ya douche.  I love how religious leaders apply the same logic and reason they used to come to the conclusion that there is an all-powerful boogeyman in the sky who knows what we do with our naughty bits every night to also conclude that educated physicians don’t know shit. In related news, the Brady Center, whose work I admire and support, wants March 30th to be a National Day of ...

Pope: ?condoms make the Aids problem worse?
2009-03-18 16:43:00
Source: Times Online A lot of Catholics have been complaining about Benedict 16?s utterly immoral statement, and, on one hand, one can?t fault them for it: it just shows that they still have some sense of morality, that they?re not mindless robots obeying ?Dear Leader?. On the other hand… do those Catholics (and Christians in general) know ...
Pope fallacy
2009-02-26 18:34:00
Thursday 26: Freedom of self-expression is important but why doesn?t the Pope demote the appallingly dense Richard Williamson? When I visited Auschwitz-Birkenau, I stepped inside a crematorium and huts at Birkenau, as well as the torture rooms in Auschwitz, and there definitely was hate and fear still emanating from their walls. I defy even the non-empathic ...

San Francisco: Pope owes millions in taxes
2009-01-22 15:04:00
This should cause great wailing and gnashing of teeth: San Francisco will try to collect up to $15 million in taxes from the Archdiocese of San Francisco, which is refusing to pay certain taxes on properties the church is transferring from one Catholic nonprofit organization to another. Batman año 100 (Paul Pope)
2008-10-04 17:54:00

Whoa. Wackjob Express. Not just for unmarried couples like her teen slut daughter and her young dumb and full of cum boyfriend, but for married couples too. Which I guess is why Sandra Rhythm Method Palin is on her fifth kid right now at age 43, a Down's Syndrome kid she created herself by getting knocked up for no reason once again so late in life and not having the kindness to put the zygote out of its misery and spare taxpayers tons of money via D & C.Her kids obviously don't believe in birth control either. And I guess the Bush Administration doesn't? Seen the latest headlines about the Bushies classifying all birth control as "abortion"? Wow, these people are really a bunch of idiots! Dangerous idiots at that.P.S. Apparently she's flip-flopped on that lately, and now she supports birth control and sex education, but I guess her daughter is too stupid to use it. She's pro-rubbers, but anti-explicit sex education, whatever the Hell that means.

Scripture and the Pope: Part 5

Here is Part 5 in my debate with Amy on papal infallibility as it is found in Scripture. Also see Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4.Pax Christi, phatcatholic - - - - - - - - - -I apologize ahead of time that most my comments are not backed with Scripture at this point. I have made most of those already in previous posts. While I put little stock in my own opinions as compared to the authority of Scripture, I am responding to the best of my ability from a biblical worldview rather than by book, chapter and verse. I have prayed extensively about this, as I consider truth claims no light matter that can be made without great accountability. (To whom much has been given, much is required.)I do think that the lack of Scriptural support is a deficiency in your argumentation. I mean no offense in this at all, but many of your arguments seem to come from your own ideas of what you would like a verse to mean instead of what the context, the original languages, other Scripture passages, and biblical schola...

John Paul II, the second-longest serving pope in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church died after a lengthy illness. Hundreds of thousands of mourners gathered in Saint Peter?s Square in Vatican City. Some visitors to the Vatican were startled by the powerful emotions that the popular pope?s death brought to the growing crowd drawn from around the world. Some dropped to their knees on the cobblestones in the square and sobbed so violently they could not be comforted by anyone; others seemed stunned as they began their cycle of grief at the loss. Pope John Paul II had been an extraordinary presence, and his absence was ove...

This Day In History - Pope Benedict XV Canonizes Joan of Arc as Saint

Joan of Arc was a French military leader and heroine. Captured and sold to the English by the Burgundians, she ...SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "This Day In History - Pope Benedict XV Canonizes Joan of Arc as Saint", url: "http://top-dollar-website.com/-articles/this-day-in-history-po-pe-benedict-xv-canonizes-joan-o-f-arc-as-saint.html" });
Scripture and the Pope: Part 4

Here is Part 4 in my debate with Amy on papal infallibility as it is found in Scripture. Also see Parts 1, 2, and 3.Pax Christi,phatcatholic- - - - - - - - - -Somewhere between ?Pope? and utter nonsense, is my view of name changes in the Bible. Jesus does not deliver the name change at this point, only makes reference to it. As if he said, ?Peter, just like your name means Rock, upon the Rock of what you just said (You are the Son of God) I will build my kingdom.? Kind of like, ?Amy (cute girl in the profile pic), Just like your name means beloved, so this smart, Phatcatholic guy loves you.?I disagree with you here and I think I can prove why, but I also don't think it's necessary. We may be going on a tangent in debating what or who "this rock" is. My understanding is that the identity of the rock confirms Peter's primacy among the apostles and the unique leadership position that Jesus gave to Peter. But, we're not debating that. Instead, we are debating whether or not Peter (a...

News : Pope goes digital to better connect with youth
2008-05-07 17:43:00
SYDNEY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict will text message thousands of young Catholics on their mobile phones during World Youth Day in Sydney in July, hoping going digital will help him connect better with a younger audience. The Pope will text daily messages of inspiration and hope during the six-day Sydney event while digital prayer walls will be erected at event sites and the church will set up a Catholic social networking Web site akin to a Catholic Facebook. The Catholic Church said it decided to use technology to connect to the estimated 225,000 young Catholics expected to attend the World Youth Day (WYD) celebrations that start on July 15. "We wanted to make WYD08 a unique experience by using new ways to connect with today's tech-savvy youth," Bishop Anthony Fisher said in a statement on Wednesday. Australian telecoms firm Telstra will provide voice, data, mobile, broadband and broadcast services for the event, as well as erect digital prayer walls at event...

Lord, source of eternal life and truth, give to Your shepherd, the Pope, a spirit of courage and right judgement, a spirit of knowledge and love.By governing with fidelity those entrusted to his care may he, as successor to the apostle Peter and vicar of Christ, build Your church into a sacrament of unity, love, and peace for all the world. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.Amen.

Scripture and the Pope: Part 1
2008-04-30 19:19:00
What follows is Part 1 in what I think will be a very fruitful dialogue with Amy, who owns a blog called "The Way I Say." I happened upon her blog because I was looking for a poem about redemption for a presentation on that topic and she just happened to have exactly what I needed. Since then she has made some very helpful comments on my blog and I look forward to our dialogue together. That said, here is her first post to me:First of all, do you like switchfoot, because that is a most important matter to clear up?Do you give as much authority to the Pope's words as you do to scripture?I definitely like Switchfoot! I hope that's ok :DAs for your second question, I don't want to give a simple "Yes" or "No" answer because I'm afraid it might imply things I don't intend. I will say that, when the pope speaks as the Successor of St. Peter, in his role of feeding and tending God's people, on a matter of faith and morals that is to be binding on the whole Church, then his words requi...
Pope’s US Visit. Is US to blame for abuse crisis?
2008-04-30 03:21:00
The headlines are going up: Pope blames US for abuse crisis. Of course, we shall need to see whether his statements exact-ly reflect the headlines. (-See BBC News reference below, Pope attacks US sex abuse record) If they are accurate, it may appear as a type of papal and Roman Catholic hierarchy self-absolution? Surely, the responsibility needs to be taken as a whole by the ‘Captain’. There can be no blame shifting, as decent Roman Catholics themselves have attested, when they were ready to buck an incredibly powerful heirarchy in a courageous coming out against sexual abuse within their church. A Suggestive Historical Counter-factual Let us alter the scenario. Suppose this: that, decades ago, a Pope had said: We are getting shocking reports of sexual abuse. We shall move against this iniquity with the utmost urgency and thoroughness and compassionate professionalism - compassionate, above all, for the survivors of this great and abominable abuse. It ...

By bringing the age-old wisdom of biblical religion into active conversa...
But for the Grace of an Old, Army Jeep
2008-04-24 23:40:00
A few Sundays ago I had the opportunity to take our new car out for a spin. As I accelerated down one of the main highways just outside of town, I felt good, happy actually, and I hadn?t felt that way in a while. With a cup of steamy 7-11 Coffee in my hand and some jazz playing on the car stereo, I hastened past a crude, cardboard sign which simply read ?Car Show.? An arrow drawn in magic marker led the way. I thought to myself that this would be a good place to take the kids later on in the morning. My wife wasn?t feeling well and I felt that the little ones shouldn't hang around the house and waste the day. Then, I caught a peek at some of the cars pulling in the lot where the event was to take place. Funky notes from the tune ?Sponge? by Randy Brecker got my foot tapping and I sped on past the ancient, re-born vehicles filing into the car show?s venue which was a church parking lot. My new Malibu ran smoothly, quiet, and I savored my artificial world crafted by General Motors an...

2008-04-24 19:56:00
This morning, Sotheby?s London announced the sale in July of one of the most important oil paintings by J.M.W. Turner to come to the market in living memory. Pope?s Villa at Twickenham is an exceptional landscape view of Alexander Pope?s villa on the banks of the River Thames at Twickenham and since its exhibition at Turner?s gallery in 1808; the masterpiece has made only one appearance on the open market in 1827 ? some 181 years ago. The painting, which is one of only a handful of major works by Turner that has remained in private hands, has hung at Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire in recent decades and is now being sold by the Trustees of the late G.M.
