looking at poppies
2009-02-11 23:35:00
- why poppies?- because they are red. (?) well, mostly red. - but you draw women, mostly women?- there is a lot of red in a woman- red! as in? lips?- red as in passion, hate, jealousy, ?- you mean women have a lot of negative feelings?- no, they have a lot of red- red being good, then?- not necessarily- from the way you talk you seem to understand women well.- i wish... but they are red. mostly red, don?t you think?- the women are red?- no, the poppies. colors are tricky?- and you reduce women to poppies, isn?t that a little too much?- i do not. i simple brought them a little closer together.- by using red?- by painting them women.- but minimal. do you think most women would like to be depicted the way you do?- you mean in red? just kidding! not sure? some say they do. but i don?t do portraits anyway.- what do you think women see in your drawings?- themselves. at least that?s often the aim.- aren?t you being over-economical with your modesty?- they don?t see themselves because the d...

Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh
2008-11-16 17:06:00
To read an Amitav Ghosh novel is not merely to get a glimpse of the best of contemporary Indian writing, but also a snapshot of an oft-ignored episode of history. The “Sea of Poppies” is no exception. After a somewhat lukewarm tryst with Sunderbans and the Gangetic Dolphin (Hungry Tide), the first novel of the ...

The Prince and the Poppies
2008-03-01 14:58:00
In my world, the British Royals are far less interesting than the Kansas City Royals, a team that had its last really good season back when Princess Diana was still alive and Marilyn had "Candle in the Wind" all to herself. I've always considered those Americans obsessed with the Buckingham Palace soap opera to be low-level traitors who should be put in stocks each July 4 so the rest of us can pelt them with red, white, and blue water balloons. Perhaps, I sometimes think, U.S. citizenship should be renewable, like a driver's license, and all applicants should be required to pass a short multiple-choice quiz every five years or so. Anyone who could accurately identify Oliver Cromwell, Anne Boleyn, and Dodi al-Fayed would fail and be required to watch consecutive showings of Mel Gibson's "The Patriot" and sing, karaoke-style, each of the songs from the musical "1776" (I feel fairly confident we can do this now, since torture has more or less been legalized).Still, it remains imp...

Poppies Blooming In Burma Thanks To Military Junta
2007-10-11 21:47:00
After a six year decline in opium cultivation, the amount of opium being grown in Burma shot up by at least 46%. Most opium in Myanmar comes from the southern ...

Are We Cutting Down the Tall Poppies?
2007-08-21 16:59:00
Unless you're from Australia, the question in the title above is, at the very least, puzzling. But as you will see, like many metaphors, it succinctly captures an important idea. The saying is one I heard regularly when I was teaching "down under" and the locals were trying to get me to understand some of their social dynamics. Basically, they used it to highlight the egalitarian streak in that society where it is not simply that everyone is equal, but that everyone should be equal. This is an admirable goal, but it does have implications that are often overlooked.

First it was my daughter having dental surgery, she's special needs so that implies they had to sedate her, and taking care of her (she's being really sore) for this week. Then it was the finalization of my other website, for my other business, webdesign, which I'm so pleased to announce www.elegantwebdesigns.net and then it has being everything else! what a week! so i'm finally able to enter my studio after a week off, and not exactly on vacations! and I was able to finish one little, well not so little painting for today. I found these not so new, but new to me, art boards at my online art supplier (check the link for it on the menu) so I wanted to try them out as I just got them and I finish this painting on this new format. Jack and the giant plume poppies
2007-07-06 18:15:00
Here we are with a rare overview of the garden - I pick so much that I am always aware that it is very green and doesn't really look like a cut flower garden. I am also aware that these photos demonstrate that the grass paths need cut pronto - the excuse is that it just hasn't been dry enough. In the photos is one of 2 long borders - they divide the two parts of the cutting garden and are filled with all the tall clumpy plants I love but which would take over a raised cutting patch very quickly.I wanted to put the photos in to show just how tall everything perennial is growing this year. The plume poppy is now 10 feet tall, the stipa gigantea isn't far behind and just look at the size of that yellow lily - far too big to cut! Here is Minou to give some sense of scale. What a contrast to the annuals - particularly the not-too-hardy annuals like dill and larkspur. I have never had such pathetic looking plants! Today I got a phonecall from a grower in Fife, desperate for flowers f...

poppies - free to a good home
2007-06-09 11:56:00
I have decided to get rid of these pale pink Oriental poppies - I want to be able to sell the darker, dusky pink "Manhattan" in bud without worrying that they will turn out to be a different colour when they come out in the vase.So these 3 plants are free to a good home (buyer must uplift) - they would look beautiful in a border with catmints, artemesias and roses - one plant has more picotee edges than the other.I got the original plants from Sue Bell at Floreat Plants but have lost the label so I can't remember the name.Drop me a line - snapdragonjane@yahoo.co.uk if you fancy them - first come first served. The weather today is fabulous - the first day that I have been able to garden in bare feet.
Poppies
2007-05-30 09:40:00
Every year - at exactly this time - I write a post about poppies.Every year - at exactly this time - I am overwhelmed by their beauty. We live in a house that isn't exactly as I would like it to be - when we bought it, it was a typical 1980s farmers bungalow - built as an economical tied house with straight blocky lines, aluminium windows and hardboard doors. We are gradually changing it but it often feels, with our painted chipboard floors and complete lack of storage space, as if we are still a long way away. The relevance of this to the poppies is this. I think the magic of having cut flowers in a house, and what separates them out from houseplants, is that they change from day to day. The doyennes of this are poppies and tulips and to my mind this makes them the very best of cut flowers. The top photo is of our living room - with a crock of poppies taken straight from the shop and plonked in the middle of the coffee table. Every time I go into the room it is the poppies I see,...

Taliban netting millions from poppies
2007-04-11 16:22:00
JASON STRAZIUSO says that Talibans are earning mllions from poppy. He writes :"When the Taliban ordered Afghanistan ?s fields cleared of opium poppies seven years ago because of Islam?s ban on drugs, fearful farmers complied en masse.Today, officials say the militia nets tens of millions by forcing farmers to plant poppies and taxing the harvest, driving the country?s skyrocketing opium production to fund the fight against what they consider an even greater evil ? U.S. and NATO troops.Afghanistan?s opium crop grew 59 percent in 2006 to 407,000 acres, yielding a record crop of 6,100 tons, enough to make 610 tons of heroin ? 90 percent of the world?s supply, according to the U.N. Western and Afghan officials say they expect a similar crop this year. No one knows the Taliban?s exact take from poppy cultivation, and guesses range from the low tens of millions of dollars to an estimate of $140 million by Gen. Khodaidad, Afghanistan?s deputy minister for counter-narcotics. His figure was ...

It?s the Poppies
2007-02-15 11:19:01
Well, it seems that sharp disagreements have emerged over the conduct of war (if there is such a thing) against the Taleban in Afghanistan. Many scholars, at a seminar in London timed to coincide with a visit to Britain by Afghan (cough, Unocal) President Hamid Karzai, have said that a ‘reality check’ is needed. Let me get this straight: the US and Britain are getting all the proceeds from the poppies to fund the war in Iraq. After five and a half years of war, what is there to check?
Wildflowers and Poppies in the Tuscan Valley
2006-12-13 15:36:02
Title: "Wildflowers and Poppies in the Tuscan Valley"Media: Oil on Gallery Wrapped CanvasSize: 12" wide x 12" highOn this particular painting I was trying something I?ve never tried before. I always paint alla prima but my background is always white. I prime my pre-primed canvas with white primer, but on this one I wanted to try something a friend of mine, also artist does, which is prime the canvas with red oxide primer. I have to admit that it is quite different both painting with a darker background and the overall result. This particular painting was inspired by a picture I took in Tuscany this past September 2004 while I was traveling with my husband and our 3 kids to visit my parents up in Gorizia, north of Italy. I was looking at the pictures of Tuscany, and this cute little house with this beautiful wild flowers field just popped out among all of them. The rich red colors of the red wild poppies were just asking me to be painted.I try to paint the Tuscan landscapes and any ot...
