The saying is one I heard regularly when I was teaching "down under" and the locals were trying to get me to understand some of their social dynamics. Basically, they used it to highlight the egalitarian streak in that society where it is not simply that everyone is equal, but that everyone should be equal. This is an admirable goal, but it does have implications that are often overlooked.

I am also aware that these photos demonstrate that the grass paths need cut pronto - the excuse is that it just hasn't been dry enough.In the photos is one of 2 long borders - they divide the two parts of the cutting garden and are filled with all the tall clumpy plants I love but which would take over a raised cutting patch very quickly.I wanted to put the photos in to show just how tall everything perennial is growing this year. The plume poppy is now 10 feet tall, the stipa gigantea isn't far behind and just look at the size of that yellow lily - far too big to cut! We are gradually changing it but it often feels, with our painted chipboard floors and complete lack of storage space, as if we are still a long way away.The relevance of this to the poppies is this. I think the magic of having cut flowers in a house, and what separates them out from houseplants, is that they change from day to day. I always paint alla prima but my background is always white. I prime my pre-primed canvas with white primer, but on this one I wanted to try something a friend of mine, also artist does, which is prime the canvas with red oxide primer.
