Whether you liked rock, pop, or rap, the 90s provided your fix for your particular tastes. Although my tastes tend to lean towards the post-grunge music I grew up on, there was no denying some of the great songs that came out of the decade.I thought it was time to switch it up and bring to you a new kind of article. Within in the next few weeks I am going to present to you guys my favorite 90s songs seperated by genres. I thought I would start off with pop since its pretty general, and well, popular. For those of you vaguely familiar with my work and wondering where I’ve been, here’s a brief explanation of sorts. It’s been a rough couple of months. On the blogging front, the two “big” stories I spent most of 2007 writing about, the evil that is Blackwater and the Jena 6 travesty of justice, are gone from the news cycle. In the first case Blackwater coverage is now buried - by, I suspect, tacit agreement between the Bush junta and corporate media - so as to allow Erik Prince and company to slither away with minimal (if any) punishment for their crimes against humanity in the name of protecting “American interests” in Iraq. But today, Sony BMG announced that, after six months of testing various waters, they were making at least some of their catalog available DRM-free. In a move that would mark the end of a digital music era, Sony BMG Music Entertainment is finalizing plans to sell songs without the copyright protection software that has long restricted the use of music downloaded from the Internet, BusinessWeek.com has learned. 2007-11-10 20:24:00 A few weeks ago I watched The US vs. John Lennon, a documentary chronicling the extraordinary lengths the American government went to in order to silence an artist who had the audacity to speak out against corruption and injustice. Of course, Lennon came from an age when artists did that sort of thing, and he wasn’t the only musician to get on the nerves of the authorities during the tumultuous ’60s and ’70s. I imagine the FBI had a file on folks like Bob Dylan, too. But we don’t live that world anymore, do we? These days the pressure to shut up and sing is greater than ever, and those who benefit most from our silence have engineered newer and more effective means for muzzling the consciences of those whose voices can actually be heard above the deafening white noise.
