Try and Pull My Pork off the Bone!
2011-06-15 15:40:00
So I will admit, with my obsessive love of lil' Miss Piggy: I had yet to attend RibFest Chicago until this past Sunday! (You can make fun- I'll take it) Here's the breakdown folks...I must have gone in with high expectations because the first ribs I had from the Cordis Brothers were pink enough to think about regurgitation, and tough enough that I may have chipped a tooth. As I managed to pass through samples of the rest; I'll give you the rub on what was worth it at the farm.Pitchfork had to have pre-cooked their fatty-goodness, as you barely tugged on the meat that fell into your mouth. Fireplace Inn had a pretty decent Boneless Rib Sandwich along with...
Pork Fillet with Salted Egg Yolk ??????
2011-04-16 10:50:00
One of our all time favourites which I will cooked when we are not so bothered by the cholesterol level contributed by the salted egg yolks. In fact, sometimes, I'll use 3 yolks instead of 2, like in this case. Hence, I leave the egg yolks in bigger pieces so we are able to nibble on it. However, 2 egg yolks are sufficient. You'll notice that I'm using pork loin, which is really tender, instead of the usual prawns for this dish. It's as good! Ingredients: 250g Pork Loin 2-3 Salted Egg Yolk 1 stem Curry Leaves, discard stem 1 Red Chilli, cut 1 tablespoon Butter 2 tablespoon Evaporated Milk 1/3 teaspoon Salt 1/2 teaspoon Sugar Marinade: 1/2 tablespoon Oyster Sauce 1/2 tablespoon Light Soy Sauce 1/2 teaspoon Sugar 1/2 teaspoon Sesame Seed Oil 4 tablespoon Corn Flour 1 Egg a dash of pepper How to do it: Cut meat into bite size. Marinate the meat for 30 minutes. Deep fry till just done.  Drain well and set aside . Meanwhile, steam the salted egg yolks for 10 min...

Pork Loin at Plum in Oakland Good, Overpriced
2011-01-16 22:19:00
Pork Loin at Plum in Oakland, originally uploaded by zennie62.Last night, I paid a visit to the new Plum Restaurant on Franklin near Broadway. It's a new addition to the Uptown Oakland food scene, joining Luka's, Osumo, Pican, Vo's, and Bakesale Beattie's, as well as Farley's Cafe and forming a nexus of food places at Broadway and Grand. Now, I'm not a restaurant reviewer. In fact, I was spurred to try Plum because of Michael Bauer's review at SFGate.com. Plus, living in Oakland, I think its important to support Oakland business whenever I can. Now, I've got to put this in perspective. The Pan-Roasted Half Chicken at The Wood Tavern is the best in the SF Bay Area. It's a 23 dollar meal that will more than fill you up; you'll have to take some of it home. I asked what the most filling dish at Plum would be and the patron next to me recommended the Pork. So I ordered it. I inhaled it. It's $18 and yet is the size of a small salad. For the money, not far from...

Libertarian Party of Georgia Asks Republican Senators, "Why So Much Pork?"
2010-12-17 04:28:00
Libertarian Party of Georgia Asks Republican Senators, "Why So Much Pork?"   ATLANTA - This week, Congress contemplates passage of a $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill.  With many criticizing the inclusion of 6,488 earmarks just weeks after Senate Republicans self-imposed an earmark moratorium, the Libertarian Party of Georgia is asking Republican Senators Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss why they have 24 and 42 earmarks, respectively, in the proposed legislation.   In both the 2008 and 2010 re-election campaigns of the incumbent Senators, they stressed their fiscally conservative credentials during their respective campaigns against far more fiscally conservative Libertarian candidates Allen Buckley and Chuck Donovan.  With a combined 66 earmarks, both Senators joined 33 other Republicans in packing the omnibus bill full of pork-barrel spending prior to the moratorium that both Chambliss and Isakson supported. "My question to the Georgia Senators ...
Pork Ribs in Plum Sauce
2010-12-09 17:16:00
Not too long ago, I went to the supermarket to get Hoisin Sauce but grab the Plum Sauce instead. I only realised my mistake when I got home. Hence, I used it as a dipping sauce when I buy roasted duck. At the rate I'm using it, I know it will end up in the bin when it expired, Not wanting to waste it, I experiment it with one of my rib dish and it went really well. Ingredients: 500g Pork Ribs Salt to taste Marinade: 1 tablespoon Light Soy Sauce 1 tablespoon Chinese Cooking Wine 1 tablespoon Corn Flour 1/2 teaspoon Garlic Power or 1 teaspoon grated garlic Sauce to mix well: 2 tablespoon Plum Sauce 1 tablespoon Tomato Sauce 2 tablespoon Sugar 1/2 tablespoon Water 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce How to do it: Marinate pork ribs with marinade for 30 minutes. Deep fry the ribs for about 5 minutes or 80% done. Drain and set aside. Heat the sauce in a wok. Add in the rib. Mix the rib well with the sauce. Toss well till the sauce thicken and ribs are completed cooked. Seas...

Adrianne Took the Frugalista Challenge and Won Pork AND Made $500!

Reader Adrienne is a great example of how you can have fun shopping and still be frugal. Listen to her story:   "I did want to share this one very exciting bit of news with you on the profitable side of de-cluttering. I just got my sale totals for the BBR sale and I'm clearing just over $500 on round one of Fall/Winter clothes!!  Plus, I now have some room in my storage area to put away the summer stuff.  Not bad!!" Caramelized Pork Rib 焦糖猪排
2010-08-15 19:45:00
This one of my all-time favourite. My husband said it looks like the Roasted Ribs 红烧排骨 that one of the stalls sells in the coffeeshop at my place. ;) I have made this less dry and without the 'burn' bits we all like. It's with a coating of sweet caramelized sweet sauce instead. Ingredients: 700g Meaty Pork Ribs, slightly fatty preferred Sesame Seeds, optional Marinade: 5 tablespoon Light Soy Sauce 4 tablespoon Brown Sugar 3 tablespoon Chinese Cooking Wine 2 tablespoon Apple Cider 2 tablespoon Tomato Sauce 400ml Water  Sesame Seed How to do it: Place ribs in a deep baking dish with the marinade. Cover with foil and bake at 190C for 1 1/2 hours. Bast with sauce in-between baking. Remove ribs and place on a rack. Retain sauce. Bast generously with the sauce and continue to bake for another 10 minutes. Repeat twice. Sprinkle roasted sesame seed and serve immediately. Note: I cut the slab of rib individually. You can cook using the whole slab of ribs instead if ...

The Great BBQ Pork Bun Off!
2010-04-15 23:11:00
Every time I make my way through Chinatown here in Chicago, I try and grab a BBQ pork bun. There are so many places where they can be found at any number of bakeries, both along Chinatown Square and Chinatown on Wentworth. The last few times I've been given a BBQ pork bun by my girlfriend after she's visited, I've instictively asked, "Which bakery did you buy this at?"Funny thing is, she doesn't always remember. And even when she does, I don't really remember if that place is specifically good or not.So I've decided to start a comprehensive list and rating system. And so, let the "BBQ Pork Bun Off" . . . BEGIN!To start things off, I need to come...

2010-03-26 22:04:00
Well, summer is around the corner and I thought I would share this recipe to get us all in the BBQ season mood.  What better way to think about summer then with those tasty little critters called pigs?  Who knew something so cute could produce such tasty things as baby back ribs, ham, pork chops, pork tenderloins, pork loins, country ribs and my all time favorite feature, BACON!!!  My friends can tell you that I have a way with bacon wrapped anything, but that is for a different time. When I started making pulled pork, I was trying out different techniques, recipes, flavors, and I have to say just keeping it simple was the best.Usually when I make pulled pork I...

Long Pork
2010-03-19 09:00:00
In this episode, I'm chatting with the folks at Long Pork, a sketch comedy group in Chicago that creates high energy landscapes of ultra-violent comic joy. If you can't see the video, please click here. The music featured during the intro and credits of this episode is a song called "Always" from local Chicago band Lucrezio. Here's some highlights from my chat with Long Pork: Sketch comedy usually involves a show comprised of sketches, or skits. This type of comedy has been popularized by Saturday Night Live, Kids in the Hall, Monty Python, and others. Long Pork shows don't have any blackouts between the scenes. Blackouts are when the lights go down between sketches so the performers can prepare...

SYTYCF entry: "Vampires: The Movie Trailer" by Long Pork
2009-11-05 21:56:00
These days it seems like all anyone can talk about is vampires. "Twilight." "True Blood." "The Vampire Diaries." It's enough to make it feel like pop culture is biting into your neck and imposing its will upon you. That's part of what makes local sketch comedy group Long Pork's entry into our "So You Think You Can Funny" contest such a hoot. (Reminder: Entries are due Nov. 11.) "In a world full of people," the voiceover says ominously, "sometimes there are vampires." Naturally, the rest of the trailer features characters disagreeing about the supposed existence of vampires, until eventually there's just a series of people saying nothing but the word "vampires." And as the voiceover reminds us, "You always think you're safe,...

Oven baked pork chop
2009-07-03 18:03:00
Here's an oven baked pork chop over a spring mix salad, topped with crushed almonds. This is very easy and simple, and makes a great lunch. The marinade for the pork chop consists of soy sauce, lemon juice, brown sugar, onion powder, garlic powder, and salt and pepper.I placed a few pork chops in a container and pour in the marinade. I let it sit in the fridge and marinate for a couple hours (or make 10-15 minutes if you're hungry). I heated the oven to 350 degrees F. I baked the pork chops for about 20-30 minutes, until the pork chops were done (The internal temperature of the pork chops should reach 160 degrees F).

Pork Steak with Salsa Salad & Cold Pink Sauce
2009-06-08 00:07:00
Fred Flintstone didn't have Tex-Mex marinated pork steak but I have. I decided to do some outdoor grilling last weekend so I purchased a large "Flinta Steak" (a Flintstone cut piece of pork). Anyway, the weather was too cold and rainy for out door grilling, so I had to cook the meat indoors. Great tasting condiments to accompany meat are a must. My basic salsa contains chopped mango, garlic, green jalapeno pepper, red onion, sweet red pepper, grated carrot, flavored with salt, raw sugar and lime juice. But one can actually try as many different combinations of fruits and vegetables, herbs and chili peppers as one can possibly dream of. A salsa involves lots of chopping and it's better to chop everything by hand rather than use a food processor. You'll then have more control over the size of the pieces. The finished product will look so much better. Naturally, with all that food, a sauce is a must too. Here's my favorite recipe for a pink, cold and ...

Five Things More Important than Pork Lung or Swine Flu or Whatever the Hell
2009-05-01 03:45:00
1. The Environment: A provision to allow oil drilling within three miles of our coast flew through the Florida House of Representatives. The Senate killed the bill, for now, but did *your* Representative vote for it? Find out now. 2. Country Music No Longer Sucks: You heard it here first. Phil Vassar wrote a song called Bobbi With an *i* about a good ‘ole country boy who likes to wear dresses and no one calls for him to be sodomized or thrown from the back of a Ford truck. 3. Women’s Issues: Two bills going through Congress will help reduce the need for abortions in this country: The Prevention First Act and The Pregnant Women Support Act. Folks with a lot to gain from the culture wars will try to convince you that these acts are in competition for the same funds. Reject their arguments. We need them both. 4. Gun Violence: In most states anyone can walk into a gun show and buy guns — like AK-47s — from unlicensed sellers without a Brady criminal background check. Las...

Mr Clout is now Principled on Pork?

You can take the man out of politics, but you can't take the politics out of the man. Tom Reynolds is suddenly anti-pork, or was it, as Heaney suggests, a final middle finger to his constituents? I'll always remember him thusly: -
