2008-05-05 02:07:00 For those of you who can tell the difference between a spurtle and a soup spoon, you may like this weeks Scottish Blog Roundup lovingly crafted in the early hours of this morning, a few hours before the starter motor in the car finally gave up. The trip to the garage was the last time it cranked over. We will have to cough up a generous portion of our meagre employee allowance to our friendly local license to print money motor mechanics. 2007-10-04 15:48:00 We were in Xian the last few days and I've got a few food posts coming up!After eating out the past few days we were starved for a home cooked meal.The moment we reached home, put the bags down, I had the rice cooker out and ready to make some porridge :) I know most people eat porridge when they get sick but David and I love it and can eat it anytime.Porridge to Asians means rice cooked with a lot of water to make a gruel but much nicer than what Oliver Twist had, I can guarantee that! We usually put a lot of ingredients in to make it tastier :)I cooked my rice in a chicken broth instead of water. When it was nicely boiling, I added diced and seasoned chicken, some straw mushrooms, pickled lettuce and some miso paste. I left it to boil until the rice was all soft.It was a satisfying lunch before getting down to doing the laundry and clearing up things used for our travel :)

A week later my husband brought home two roasted ducks from the Seventh Month Festival aka Ghost Festival (the Asian Halloween) praying session. My husband is in the Construction Industry and having a Chinese boss, praying during the seventh month of the Lunar Calendar is a must for them to ensure smooth and 'accidents' free operation.Anyway, I didn't waste the bones (again) and went ahead to make more broth with them. This time I cooked porridge with the broth with shredded duck meat in it. I tore out the skin and pan fried them without oil (They are like streaky bacon. See the oil later.) till they are crispy. I haven't try it but everyone who had, tells me it's the best.It's not easy to prepare frog legs. To start with, one have to overcome the grossness of handling the skinless frog. 2007-06-14 05:19:00 I am sure there are many ways to cook fish porridge. This was how I did mine yesterday night.I put the rice to boil in the rice cooker but with a lot more water. I added ikan bilis stock to add flavour. For the fish, I diced onions and chopped ginger finely to fry with. When the fish was cooked, I added soy sauce and a dash of pepper. Add the cooked fish to the porridge only when it is almost ready to serve. For vegetables, I used freeze dried rape vegetables and I added it to the porridge when it was nice and boiling.I call this comfort food :)
