2008-04-29 18:17:00 One of my favorite musical sub-genres is sort of an off-shoot of trip-hop, a sultry urban electropop district where the downbeat influence of Portishead meets up with all kinds of interesting characters dressed like David Bowie in the ’70s. California pure pop a la Burt Bacharach, for instance, which we find in the likes of Saint Etienne (and the solo work of singer Sarah Cracknell), Mono and Hooverphonic. These groups are almost always fronted by female vocalists, and every year or two I trip across another one that just blows me away. In 2002 it was Frou Frou, and in 2005 the duo’s singer, Imogen Heap, knocked us out with the brilliant Speak for Yourself. Black Box Recorder did two or three must-have CDs and singer Sarah Nixey’s solo debut last year was one of my Gold LP winners. Den där softa triphop-tyngden dränks i ljud och oljud. Har gett skivan två försök, men orkar inte igenom hela. Fast Beth har fortfarande en av världens coolaste röster. Jag får hålla mig till de gamla skivorna helt enkelt.

2008-03-12 20:58:00 It was around February 2005 when Geoff Barrow announced the process of 3rd’s writing in the Tsunami Benefit Concert in the band’s homeland, Bristol. Portishead (the band name is a town near Bristol, too) is known for their suicidal trip-hop which is amplified by the narrow deadly crying voice of Beth Gibbons that sounds like a wounded soldier’s dying lullaby all the way through. 3rd might have took some 30 months for the band to write and record but it has taken some eleven years for the hungry fans to hear something new from their beloved lazy heroes. The gap was too long to deny but it’s Portishead’s signature trip-hop that has remained untouched. Comparing to Dummy and the self-titled 1997 album, 3rd inherits a tremendous amount of sampled vibes as well as profound drumming and numb tunes. Este disco es el primero de dos, salió a la venta en 1994 y llegó a ser el #2 en el top de el reino unido, a pesar de la aversión de la banda de la atención de la prensa. Además de la pareja original (Geoff Barrow y Beth Gibbons), en este disco tiene una colaboración muy pesada el guitarrista Adrian Utley.En mi caso la banda con la que conocí el trip-hop y que mejor que con la música a todo volúmen, en esas pintas donde nos íbamos a casa de un cuate cuyos padres trabajaban y no estaban en la mañana, de esas mañanas llenas de drogas ligeras y ocio causado por la adolescencia jaja.
