Portland Pirates 4, Connecticut Whale 2
2012-01-19 04:03:00 Portland, ME, January 18, 2012 ? The Connecticut Whale?s losing streak stretched to seven games Wednesday night, as they lost a 4-2 decision to the Portland Pirates at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Connecticut (19-15-2-4, 44 pts.) did maintain first place in the Northeast Division despite the loss, remaining two points ahead of the Albany Devils, who lost 5-4 at home to the Norfolk Admirals. Four different Pirates scored in the victory for Portland, Andy Miele had two assists, and Justin Pogge made 22 saves. Erik Christensen and Scott Tanski scored the Whale goals, and Kris Newbury assisted on both. The Whale appeared to get a break only 1:51 into the first period when Alexandre Bolduc, playing his first game of the season after missing Portland?s first 39 games due to injury, got a four-minute butt-ending penalty. Not only did Connecticut not score on the long man-advantage, but they gave up a freak shorthanded goal at 5:23. Whale starting goaltender Chad Johnson ...

Reebok/AHL Player of the Week Kris Newbury gave the Whale a 1-0 lead just 25 seconds into the opening period, after Portland goaltender Justin Pogge (16 saves) kicked out a Brendan Bell shot. Connecticut Whale 3, Portland Pirates 2 (OT)
2011-11-24 05:01:00 By Brian Ring Hartford, CT, November 23, 2011 - Brendan Bell?s second overtime goal in less than a week led the Connecticut Whale to a 3-2 victory over the Portland Pirates Wednesday night in Hartford. Whale defenseman Tim Erixon assisted on all three of the team?s goals in the game, helping Connecticut to their third straight victory, all three wins coming either in overtime or the shootout. For the second straight game, the Whale rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win. ?It speaks to their character that they?re willing to fight right to the end there,? said Whale head coach Ken Gernander. ?These guys push hard and pay the price to get the job done.? The first period was scoreless, despite the Whale being outshot, 13-8, by the Pirates. Connecticut had the better chances, but Portland goaltender Curtis McElhinney (33 saves) was up to the task, as he turned away numerous opportunities while helping to kill a Chris Summers penalty. The Deng to Portland rumour got changed for the worse
2010-07-08 10:46:00 A couple of days, I brought the story of a rumoured Deng to Portland trade, one that had received airtime on ESPN Radio 1000. The rumour suggested that Luol Deng might be traded to the General Manager-less Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Joel Przybilla's expiring contract and backup guard Jerry D. Bayless. I would have done it then, and I still would now. An analysis of the anatomy of the anecdote reveals that it originated on the Oregon Live Blazers forums. It takes but a brief look at those to see that they're not exactly the same calibre of source as an Adrian Wojnarowski tweet. Not even the same calibre of source as a lettuce. Having said that, the...

Former Duncan Aide Leaves Portland Schools
2010-06-18 01:48:00 Thanks to a kind reader for tipping me off about this development: "Xavier Botana, Portland Public Schools' chief academic officer and one of the architects of the pending high-school redesign, is leaving the school district after just one year. Firefighters Union 'Sticks it' to the City of Portland
2010-03-17 20:06:00 -By Warner Todd Huston The Oregonian has a disheartening story proving once again why public employees unions should be outlawed. Here we have a case of a criminal fireman who ripped off the city through a false claim of being injured and unable to work, he admits his guilt and doesn't press the city for more benefits, yet the union DOES take the city to court to get undeserved benefits for this layabout fireman! For 12 years fireman Tom Hurley ripped off the city of Portland's fireman's disability fund by receiving monthly checks of $3,200 at the taxpayer's expense despite that he really wasn't disabled. In fact, he took the city's money and put himself through cooking school and then...
Chicago Bulls vs Portland Trail Blazers, 7:00 PM CSN-Chicago
2010-02-27 00:12:00 With Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla out, the Blazers decided to make a push for a center. They acquired the second-leading rebounder in the NBA in Marcus Camby only to see him go down as well. Camby's status is unknown for the game tonight. Should the experienced shot-blocker not play tonight, the Bulls have an open lane all night long against LaMarcus Aldridge and Juwan Howard.Chicago come off a 120-110 win over the Pacers on Wednesday. Luol Deng erupted for 31 points and nine rebounds, and All-Star point guard Derrick Rose closed in on a triple-double with 23 points, nine boards and 8 assists....
Chicago Bulls @ Portland Trail Blazers 9:00 PM, NBATV
2009-11-23 19:41:00 After two rough road losses, the Chicago Bulls will look to bounce back against Brandon Roy and the Trail Blazers tonight in Portland. The Bulls dropped a 93-112 game to Denver, in which fatigue, lack of defense and poor guard play, all hit the team in the second half. Chicago gave up 66 points, after holding the Nuggets to just 14 first-quarter points. The Trail Blazers come in at 10-5, having won eight of their last 10 games. All-Star guard Brandon Roy has been his usual stellar self, averaging a well-rounded19.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.9 assists....

STL Road Trips to Rainy Portland, Oregon
2009-09-08 05:12:00 Happy Labor Day! STL spent the holiday weekend not working in rainy Portland, Ore. Yesterday, I had breakfast with my better half at the deservedly popular Cadillac Cafe. Since I was on holiday, I focused on my delicious breakfast burrito — not less savory issues of infringement or dilution. This morning we paid a visit to one of Portland’s great brands, Voodoo Doughnut, but the line was way too long for this hungry customer so we went down the block to Stumptown Coffee, another Portland icon. As luck would have it, I snagged their last VOODOO-brand donut and washed it down with a damn fine cup of coffee before heading north.
A Photo Gallery of Homes in Portland, Oregon, known as Nob Hill
2009-09-07 07:00:00 I discovered a little pocket of delightful homes in Portland, Oregon, while on vacation. These homes are located in the Alphabet Historic District in Northwest Portland, dubbed Nob Hill. My husband and I grabbed a long weekend right after the 4th of July and flew to Portland. It's a quick flight, about an hour from Sacramento. Besides touring the sights in Portland, we also walked through a few neighborhoods. I always feel the need to look at real estate, even on vacation. I constantly hear about how progressive Portland is as it's sometimes held up as a model to follow, especially concerning its infill projects and neighborhood developments. I hope you'll be as intrigued as you look through the photo gallery of homes in Nob Hill, the Northwest area of Portland . . . read more about Homes in Portland. Kirk telling friends he's going to Portland
2009-06-24 21:03:00 Adrian Wojnarowski reportsChicago Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich is telling friends that he thinks he'll be dealt to the Portland Trail Blazers, who have interest in pairing him with Brandon Roy. And just not to create another Kirk Hinrich post, I'll throw this odd tidbit in there from a Blazers blog:Speaking of point guards....Jason Kidd, Andre Miller and even Steve Nash have been linked to the Blazers of late. And while any of those three would be a solid fit for Portland, word is management is torn about Chicago's Kirk Hinrich. It's not Hinrich's talent that is in question. It's his character....

Buchholz Demoted To Double A Portland...Orioles 11 Red Sox 6
2008-08-21 11:27:00 The Boston Red Sox, who were defeated by the Baltimore Orioles Wednesday night by a score of 11-6, have demoted pitcher Clay Buchholz to their Double A Portland club. It's clear to all of us that he is just not ready to perform at the major league level. Here's what he said after learning his well-deserved fate... "...but the last couple starts, it's hard to think they can give me any more opportunities than they have in this stretch, especially with only a month and a half left in the season and the pennant race as close as it is now. You've got to send guys out there that you believe are going to go out there and give you a win or give you six, seven innings, and I haven't been doing that. So I hate to say it was the right decision, but I believe it was."Peter here, and it was. Was Fred Flintstone's carbon footprint small enough for Portland?
2008-06-03 16:50:00 We got another goofball flyer from Sam the Tram and Transportation Sue yesterday, telling us about our "options" in getting from Point A to Point B. We don't know how much the City of Portland is paying people to create these glossy mailers, but whoever it is must not get paid enough for any new ideas. Here's the cover photo on the latest one: Here's the cover photo on the one we got last fall: Hey, Sam, that's pretty shallow, even for you. Give it a rest. But after drying our eyes from that belly laugh, we opened the four-page brochure to behold a sight that stopped our heart. For years, we have been searching for that single image that epitomizes the arrogance of the Portland city government. Today it arrived. Maybe some day something better than this will come along, but for now, this picture is worth a thousand words: Yes, there you have it. When it comes to delivering transportation services to its residents and visitors, Portland says, "Get off your butt a...
